If you're going to build a conference, these two schools are the best foundation in college sports today.

Why are they the best? Two schools in small towns with limited TV eyeballs. They are very good football teams but that is not what conferences are about, unfortunately. Cal and Stanford are in the ACC not because of the quality of their mediocre football teams but because of the Bay Area TV market.

Read my comment carefully. I said "college sports," not football. In addition to football and basketball, there are a myriad of other sports that are just as important to athletes and their fans. And distance does matter, especially with the non-revenue and womens' sports.

Stanford, with its huge endowment will have no financial issues sending its volleyball, fencing, crew, track and field, baseball, softball, water polo, field hockey, lacrosse, etc. teams to Boston, Durham or Clemson.

Cal, not so much. And from the east, Va. Tech, Pitt and other state and /or less-moneyed schools are going to look at Title IX and gulp. And wonder if maybe increasing conference size wasn't such a good idea after all.

I agree that fans care about other sports but football subsidizes all of the other sports. Football drives conference alignment because it, and basketball, are the only sports that make money. Btw…Stanford does have a huge endowment but that is not necessarily available to subsidize sports. At many schools athletic departments need to fund themselves with little or no general fund money.

Thanks Greg!! I am a Beav and I was at home listening to Mike Parker, the voice of the Beavers, on the radio pregame show. He described a really awesome scene with a super positive vibe during the pregame festivities and shared that the WSU Band playing the OSU Fight song was great but he expected that. However he did not expect to see Butch and Benny come out of the tunnel carrying the opposite school's colors and he shared that he found it very moving. If you have a second did you experience the same vibe as a fan??

Hats off to the Cougs BTW. I love Jonathan, Trent and the Beavers coaches however I felt that they were flat out-coached by Jake Dickert and his staff. I believe your O-Coordinator is only 26?? The offensive cadence and creativity shown by WSU was outstanding. Plus #3 had 2 NFL like on-handed catches. The Cougs are the real deal!! No one is going undefeated in PAC 12 conference play. I hope we get to meet again in Vegas!!!

25 year WSU season ticket holder here. Vibe at tailgates and in stadium was great. Met a ton of awesome Beaver fans and really enjoyed all the conversations. Much respect for Beaver Nation. Couldn’t have been a better weekend in my book.

Made a last minute decision to drive to Pullman after reading that the OSU/WSU flags will be appearing together at each College Game Day. First ever trip to Pullman. While the outcome was not pleasing, the whole game atmosphere was outstanding! Nothing like a packed stadium, and it was quite emotional to see the two mascots enter the arena together!

Thanks for this post Tony! The stadium atmosphere looked fantastic on TV!!

Mike Parker commented at the end of the pregame that he found the Butch and Benny entrance into the stadium to be very moving as well. He shared that the sight of the 2 of them together like that caught him off-guard at how emotional it made him feel.

Tip of the cap to the Cougs!! They are a great football team and I hope they beat the DAWGS and Ducks!! I still like our Beavs and I hope DJ found something in the 4th quarter. He could have thrown in the towel, but he hung in and continued to play hard!! Pullman has always been a tough game for us. There is a lot of season left!!!

Good job. Now that this game is over, Go Beavs. As always, go Cougs!

I'm interested to see the TV ratings. Nobody has proved Land Grant Institutions don't get an audience because they are located in small towns. Abraham Lincoln could never had seen this coming and would not like it that his vision for bringing education to the people would be used to divide the country. It was a great game and people watched!

Not much consolation, but a fact…after the second play of the game, we outscored WAZZU 35-31. I think we can take some solace in this. Looking forward to Friday night. Go Beavers.

I expected better out of the Beavs. Fenwick and Martinez did good running the ball, The five star quarterback looked confused and was as indecisive and inaccurate as a three star freshman,

the secondary doesn't seem to believe you cover a receiver until after the catch. For the Cougs they didn't seem to get that a pass ten or more yards was successful and a screen or near the line wasn't.

All in all the score was closer than the game. Thought SDSU would be a wakeup call for the Beavs Hope they figure it out before Friday.

That first photo really summed up the OSU defensive effort, especially against the pass. While the WSU receiver is trying to reel in the ball for a catch, the OSU DBs -- in this case, Jermod McCoy -- are still looking back to find the ball. One of the more frustrating OSU performances of the last couple of seasons.

GameDay not going to Corvallis next week is a steaming pile crock of shit!!!!

Couldn’t agree more. Building a brand takes work and some creative genius at times. WSU/OSU had a bad situation forced upon them but it was also an opportunity. They had the eyes of the country on them. That won’t last forever and they are wasting time. Next year it could be the “we don’t care” bowl. Spend the money.

This post shows a lot about the type of person you are. Calling 2 good football programs struggling to stay relevant'trash'? It's depressing there are subscribers like you posting really thoughtless comments...and trying to take away from a great game day experience and fabulous photography.
