another good column, John, and I feel the football Ducks finally have a good head coach who has his priorities very much in order. family, and a culture here the coaches and players are very happy in. I liked the things you listed to do in Eugene, and made me miss living there . just a great city and college campus, and maybe someday Auten will be expanded and filled. I do not wager on Duck games anymore, as one cannot smartly wager with your heart. I concentrate on other teams before going to the two casinos in Oregon where sports gambling is allowed. I was positive the Ducks would lose last year to Ohio State. Shows what I thought I knew. I have high hopes for the coming season, and agree with you that Oregon should cover the 18 points versus Georgia. Give the Ducks about five years, if they can retain the coaches, and also get a good tv deal, and maybe we can compete with the big boys year in and year out. Now the Pac-12 is a sad also ran in most sports, and I still choke when they are called the tournament of champions. Sure does include football, or even basketball. GO DUCKS

When I was attending U of O grad school during the summer "back in the day"..There were no 'upscale' eateries. There used to be a small place around the block from the book store that had the best tempura mushrooms etc and stir fry ramen for a buck or so. It was not too far, as I remember, from Golden Temple Bakery (where Cam Healy-a fellow Bend Lava Bear-- of Kettle Foods got his start)

He needs to visit The Dexter Lake Club and listen to Shout a couple of times to get a feel for The Ducks spirit!

Appreciate the tips - my daughter is going to UO this Fall and we will make at least one game. Can also vouch for Studio One Cafe. Original Pancake House has already been slotted in for next trip. (They got some nice pub during the Worlds too.)

So lame that all these big “neutral field” (lol) games continue to take place in SEC country. Why not at SoFi, Vegas, or even Lumen field up in Seattle?

San Diego State would likely be a good addition however I don't see any reason for them to add another member after that. There will be no divisions so there's no reason to have it 12th member. They would just have to weigh the positive aspects of having another Southern California team that probably won't bring in $30 million a year at least for a while. As for the future with San Diego State's New Stadium bringing a much stronger income than before ,they might well offer them 1/2 share of media rights for say five years. The one concern for some schools is it in recruiting San Diego State in the PAC 12 will boost it's recruiting edge probably to the detriment of the Arizona schools and Washington State and Oregon State to some extent. At least insofar as Southern California is concerned.

I'd tell him watch out for the poison oak on Spencer Butte!

I'm curious--Houston in the Pac would give them less money, farther travel, and fewer rivalries. What are the reasons Houston would move?

If George and the Pac-12 can negotiate a deal that exceeds a media rights deal >500M your Fox insider estimated than he really did "kick ass". I am curious with all the out of box thinking (ACC partnership, PACN+ACCN+ESPN+) non-traditional Digital/Streaming Media etc... can pull this off.

However the projected 500M deal even with the LA schools was still not enough to close the gap with the b10 and the sec. I am not sure how the Pac-12 remains financially competitive in the long term without a deep pocketed Pac-12 person like Phil Knight just throwing money at the league or some other angel partner like Apple or Amazon.

In the end in this age of greed the media rights value is the only measure that matters.

If what you say is true, then why did Kliakov spend 5 minutes attacking the Big 12 during media day?

Why does the Duck staff/branding include camouflage?

I've never understood that.

That's something you wear if you're out hunting ... and killing ducks

Is this a 3D chess thing like "Ducks Unlimited" ... which is an organization to conserve, restore, and manage wetlands and associated habitats for North America's waterfowl ....

... so they can go hunt and kill the waterfowl

If Chip would stay long enough to catch the Sept. 3rd game, I would tell him to not park his rental in Autzen's parking lot. I heard somewhere that it is a ZOO trying to get outta there. He might as well stay in the stadium and conduct interviews with Dawg & Dick fans for a couple of hours until the traffic jam has died down.

Glad to see the ATL sending for some recon. Now on to The Elephant in the Room:

I'm still uncomfortable with any 'loose partnership' with the ACC because it seens impossible to put definitive (contractual) agreements alongside. Does this matter? Seems so to me.

With that said, adding SDSU and SMU with haste seems the right play. And if yiou can coerce Houston you might balance tbings out with UNLV, whose profile and brand value would rise tenfold under this scenario. That's a 14 team conferenece which could stand toe to to with BiG and SEC long-term. And the ACC partnership looks hella more appealling.

John, just a quick question about the "kicking ass" comment. Is that the same quote you shared early on after the USC/UCLA bombshell dropped, or is it an AD (same or different, doesn't really matter) reiterating the sentiment in the past few days?

On the one hand, I wonder how much more content ESPN+ could possibly want. They have live cricket from across the globe, for crying out loud. But then I think about how much Pac-12 content I would be likely to consume if available. I'd probably watch a bunch, if only as background noise while I work. Here's hoping they get a deal done.
