I keep rescanning the USC - San Jose stats to analyze the stats comp and I really can't come up with any conclusive conclusion. Maybe the Beavs defense is more solid than USC and USC's offense is more explosive?
Brennan, the SJSU coach said his team made a lot of mistakes against USC and thought they could have played a lot better. But first game jitters on the road. In today's game, SJSU looked pretty solid to me. They don't give up much size or speed against the Beavers, who are a solid Top 20 team. Their skill position players are very good and quick with Cordeiro, Conley and Nash. The front seven on D were big and solid but OSU OL is one of the best in the country and so they had a hard time getting to DJU. I saw one or two obvious errors on the SJSU secondary, like the blown coverage on the Velling TD. Otherwise, that is a big, fast secondary which had 3-4" on our shorter WRs. But otherwise, SJSU looks good and will win a lot of games this year in the MWC. One thing about SJSU is their heritage. Man do they have a lot of football gods on their alumni (Jack Elway, Dick Vermeil and Bill Walsh among others). That can't hurt their future
Secondary was a pleasant surprise. If they can play that tight in coverage in the PAC12, this is a better D than last year, which was one of the best in the nation. Still would like more pressure on the other team QB. But they did not blitz once today that I noticed. That was a base D all the way. And then there is Oladapo. Man do I love him and the way he is always around the ball and hits hard!
No maybe--Beavs defense is a sounder version than USC. Yes, they had some tape from last week, but that doesn't make good team defense. It'll win them a lot games.
Onward Beavs. Nice win, you have very good team. Wish you the best this year. My Ducks and the rest of the ill managed Pac are scattering to the wind in search of greener ($$$$$) pastures.
Good game by the Beavers. We already knew this from training camp reports, but DJU is the real deal. What I was more interested in was the D and especially the secondary, which turned over 100% from 2022. I was very pleased with the secondary, which played the SJSU receivers press in 1 on1 the entire game and stayed right with them, including with No. 3 Nash, the stud WR of SJSU. Robinson was special and so was Arnold. But the D line needs to apply more pressure. The Beaver LBs were solid as usual. Oladapo looked especially good with a lot of hard hits and always close to the ball. On offense, the OL did not miss a beat from 2022 and it is the same WRs and RBs as last year and so we know what we have there. The Beavers have a shot at a 12-0 season if they can get more pressure out of the D line
Wouldn't that be great! You are talking about the PAC12 conference championship. The last one ever (unless a new PAC-MWC combo retains the name and events). The Beavs played good, not great today. But DJU looked very good in terms of decision making. We all knew he had a strong arm, from reports at Clemson, but it was beautiful to see 40 yard throws on a rope vs the past couple QBs. Mannion or Anderson did not even have that arm. It is a cannon. He ran exactly when he should, not too often or too little. I have zero complaints with DJU. Martinez did not overpower the SJSU D line or LBs, showing their quality. He got 145 yards but had to earn it. Fenwick looked good on his touches. The WRs are the same as 2022, ran the same routes and didn't drop balls (last year Harrison dropped a bunch). Acceptable. The all new D secondary was much better than I expected while the front seven was less. But this is game one. I am sure they will continue to develop.
Thank you! Yes, Rising seems to be having a hard time getting back on the field. His injuries must have been worse than thought. But the Ute D sure did a number on Florida yesterday.
Rising was medically cleared on Friday to participate in full practice. If I was a betting man, I'd say he's probably going to get some snaps versus Weber State in a couple of weeks just to shake the rust off. That way he'll be ready for the home game versus UCLA on 23 September. The Utes play OSU right after that and will definitely need the best version of Rising to have a good chance in Corvallis. I'm keeping my expectations low given the amount of talent in the conference but, as all USC fans know, it would be a mistake to underestimate any team coached by Kyle Whittingham.
Our chant in the Cal student section in my day was (B)eat the Beavers...hahahaha. I'd pay to see them beat the Quacks and win the "Pac-Whatever"....payback...you know like UO is undefeated and the Beavs beat them...oh boy.
Of course in my day we tried to get water balloons into the Stanford tuba...but we were a tad more outrageous before PC.
I’ve been to many opening season games, and I must say, it was nice NOT to be on pins & needles wondering if the Beavers would win, and those were home games…this was a road game against a solid SJS team. Beavers dominated in workmanlike fashion. This could be a magical season.
I can remember plenty of early season non-conf games against Idaho, EWU, Nevada, or PSU that were not gimmes and came down to the wire or were a loss. I agree it is nice to play a lower tier FBS team and do what an upper tier FBS team is supposed to do. I hope the Beavs never again have to play FCS teams, to be quite honest.
I was impressed with the tackling and the speed of the defensive backs. Yes there were some PI's but I expect Bray will get it cleaned up. Not much yars after catch. Go Beavers!
An overall solid all-around effort for the first game of the season, especially playing on the road. I will give the Beavs a grade of a solid "B." I'm sure they didn't show a lot of defensive schemes today, and the same with the offense. I think good things are coming their way!
I was concerned about this game, they played USC tough at USC. We went on the road, our first game. Game 1 to Game 2 is generally the largest improvement for a team. I'll be concerned about the next game too. It's how we do.
It's a GREAT day to be a Beaver!
Everyday is a great day to be a Beaver.

Anyways, Beavs hammered the spread.

Beaver defense is very good. They swarm the ball carrier. We look fast.

Oladapo is an all-American

Thanks for the pics- great shots.
Great win for America's Team!

Maybe you'll get the chance to play USC one last time.

I don't have the impression we'll get there this year...call it a gut feeling. If we don't, you guys and the Cougs are 1A and 1B in my book.

So happy for Utah. Should be a great game with them at Reser
LOL...I have PTSD from the last time we played there... I still see Jack Colletto in my dreams or should I say nightmares?
The secondary was a real pleasant surprise. They were solid against a pretty good QB and WR corps.
Agree on the secondary, surprised me how dam good they are.
Robinson was amazing
Oh those Beavers!
America's team!

Favorite photo is Aiden Chiles in action and everything around him a blur.

alway enjoy the column / good stuff
Wish for a “ John Canzano “ for Husky-ville!
There's a lot to like from this game. Great photos, as ever. Capture this season in photos for the Beavers. One for the ages.
Great stuff John!
