Photo Gallery: First look at Trent Bray's Oregon State team
Who will start at quarterback next season?
CORVALLIS — Oregon State held its spring showcase scrimmage on Saturday at Reser Stadium. First-year head coach Trent Bray’s defense looked dominant, the quarterbacks were just OK, and the “Orange” beat the “Black” by a score of 10-7.
It isn’t wise to draw sweeping conclusions based on a tiny sample size. So I’m going to avoid going too deep here. Also, there were a handful of veteran OSU players who weren’t suited up. But Saturday’s scrimmage raised a few good questions.
Among them: Who starts at quarterback next season? Will OSU improve enough on the offensive line to make it matter? And how much better will the Beavers be after the transfer portal closes? Meaning, will OSU add talent at a few positions?
I enjoyed the play-calling of offensive coordinator Ryan Gunderson. OSU’s offense featured a creative screen game. I liked the running backs, defensive backs, and linebackers. But again, it’s a single simulated event.

I thought it was a slight sample of what we will see in the fall and the first game.
There three O line starters who did not play but will be ready for fall camp, which will make a difference in the O line play. As for the defense, I liked what I saw. They are ahead of the offense which is to be expected.
As for the Q B, I personally like Gaberi Johnson. Remember he has only had three practice before today, but I thought he showed poise, and he seemed confident and comfortable. I believe he can do more with his legs if a play breaks down than McCoy. He is very shifty and hard to tackle.
We now have 122 days before the first game, so there is a lot of time to work on a lot of things.
I believe we will be a very good team when all is said and done. At least I hope so👍😊
John, please do column on Oregon Stare baseball so I can tell everyone what I think of Dorman, the pitching coach. Should have been fired end of last year but how many games is he going to lose for Beavs before Canham replaces him. His CALLS out of the bull pen sometimes make no,sense!
