I'm surprised no one has recalled the infamous incident that really started the hatred between Oregon and Washington. Back in 1948, Oregon finished 7-0 in the 9 member PCC, and Cal finished 6-0. (In the days of the PCC, there was no such thing as schedule consistency). Further, because Oregon and Cal did not meet that year, the conference's representative to the Rose Bowl was decided by a vote of the University Presidents/Chancellors. The higher win total wasn't a factor.

It was assumed that the Northern schools would vote as a block for Oregon, one of their own, and since there were 5 Northern schools at the time (Idaho was in the conference), that would send the Ducks to the Rose Bowl. But Washington voted with the California block, for California, sending the Bears to the Rose Bowl instead.

Oregon did ok, in that they went to the Cotton Bowl (to play, ironically, a candidate for addition to the Pac, SMU). But then as now, the Rose Bowl is the Rose Bowl. Washington voting with the Cal block incensed Oregon, and frankly didn't win them any friends with any of the other 3 NW schools either.

You nailed the beginning of the Oregon Washington rivalry according to the stories that I remember hearing.

Regarding schools leaving the Pac-12, and other conferences for that matter, the announcement of the coming expansion of the CFP playoffs from 4 teams to 12, which opened doors for a lot of teams that would have had to go through a door in the SEC or B1G otherwise changed every calculus for every sport everywhere in the FBS. A lot of things that were serious and legitimate necessities immediately ceased to be necessary, and a lot of other options (including holding the remnants of the Pac together) instantly went from untenable to the best option.

Spot on. Currently over ranked SC and a revitalized and currently under ranked UCLA would be Pac-12 CFB PO contenders every season. Now? Get in line behind Ohio State, Michigan, perhaps Penn State and Wisconsin when the Badgers bounce back.

Good luck playing games in B1G stadiums in November.

Expand full comment

It could work out for USC, when they have the right coach (and they might now); SC is just a different animal. But UCLA has made life more difficult for itself.

Expand full comment

Agreed. It takes a lot of time for teams to work their way into the top echelon of a division or conference. SC and UCLA did that in the Pac 12 over decades of competitiveness, now they could be facing having to climb a new pecking order out in the bitter cold midwest and it may not go how they like.

Expand full comment

In reality, its 4 trips per year, and at least a couple will be early enough that weather won't be an issue. They currently risk a November trip to the NW or the mountains, so its more a matter of length, not the weather. I'd also expect the schedule to be slightly back-loaded with games in LA, as the B1G tries to avoid a bad weather game; some midwest teams might like an LA trip in mid-November.

They may get an invite. But if they only have half the financial resources for coaches, expanded staff, facilities, and potentially revenue sharing with athletes they won’t advance far.

Curious, I sat in a diner in Memphis yesterday , reading John's blog .

They were talking about playoffs and who will take the place in the Ohio state /Michigan slot since they both play later this season.

This group was easily 13 people grouped together and all excited to talk about cfb.

Here's the rub not one time was oregon, or any pac 12 mentioned in the conversation. Clemson , 2 loss Alabama, Tennessee, Lsu ,Ole Miss were hotly debated . I couldn't help but to casually join the conversation as they were sitting next to me.

When I mentioned pac 12 and the reinvigorated Bo Nix at oregon. They casually just dismissed it this way.. ANY SCC QUATERBACK WOULD DOMINATE PAC 12 TEAMS!

I BROUGHT UP THAT A FEW QBS CAME UP FROM PAC 12 AND DID WELL

How about Daniels in the SEC this season. Pretty impactful transfer from the Pac-12.

Oh boy! My UTES could really screw everything up in the PAC by beating The Ducks and winning out. The PAC Championship will be UCLA vs Oregon or Utah

Pins and needles for Ducks fans looking at the last 3 games and knowing to Pac-12 team has run the conference since the Utes and CU came on board.

However, the back loaded schedule should help Oregon to materially close the SOS gap with TN.

Here’s an idea. CFP should ding Michigan for backing out of a game vs. UCLA. It would’ve been a hot matchup.

Instead, the Bruins get dinged for low strength of schedule. Their body of work in P12 games is better than USC, IMO.

Expand full comment

I think the vs thin air OOC slate Michigan played will come back to haunt then if the Wolverines lose in Columbus and finish 11-1. I think TN has a PO shot at 11-1 but not Michigan.

There is NO statistic that justifies SC being ranked ahead of UCLA. UCLA has 2 PO top 25 wins; SC zero top 25 wins.

In your article distribution of media rights I have learned a lot. As a fan and season ticket holder I want to be informed so I can have good conversations with others. Don James bus busted, who knew? Great stuff.

Every time I hear about the Saban coaching tree I am reminded that Saban's success all began playing and then coaching for Don James. Ditto Gary Pinkel.

Agree that the additional payouts should not be thrown into the media mix of numbers but had the Pac-12 picked off the 'leftover' B12 schools it would have been one heck of a CBB conference making big CBB tourney bucks.

Expand full comment

Coach Pinkel's memoir is a great read, and in the absence of a similar Saban book on the horizon, offers good insight into the roots and template from which Saban built. Pinkel only held two HC jobs, and thus didn't have as many chances to iterate or experiment as Saban, and thus didn't stray as far from the rigid and intricate James blueprint.

Thanks Joe. Considering that he took MIZZOU to 2 SEC playoffs he indeed did an excellent job at Missouri.

Don James was an outstanding CFB coach who left the game over players receiving benefits that are the norm today.

The Process emanated from the coaching of Don James. Saban is the GOAT but only because he went south first to LSU and then Bama in the rich, rich recruiting grounds of the south. And with his success he now recruits nationwide.

2 blips in the last 3 games. Somehow his WR pipeline went dry and the OL play is not up to par of previous seasons. Probably a Sugar Bowl this season but to write him and the Bama program off is a mistake.

The PO nightmare for non-SEC fans? LSU wins out including defeating UGA in the SEC Champ game and LSU, UGA and Tennessee could all make the PO. It has been fun to watch Nix blossom in Eugene but also see Daniels play his best ball at LSU.

He isn't warm and fuzzy but Brian Kelly cab flat out coach.

I got the $70 million versus $30 million nummbers for USC and UCLA going to Big 10 versus the alleged pac-10 revenue in two years from you. It has been changed as today you claim is has moved to a difference of 31 million (61 to 32) I understand these numbers are all apprx figures, but please do not change your claims facts or lack of in mid-stream lacking a fact-check. One day you agree with me, and now you have claimed the ole roshambo more or less. You boast about sticking to the facts, or blame other people if you are caught in a changing story. Fact check me John. I asked you to stop the regular charges to my credit card for the 10 monthly subscriptions of 6.99 per for your column I had bought for family and friends There never any mentions of regular recurring charges of 6.99 each per subscriptions. . I like reading you daily, but I remember you were arrogant in your early days here in my native city. I had hoped it could change. I contacted you and nicely asked you to stop the many 6.99 charges. Here is your exact reply "you could just go to an annual deal" If i had 10 "deals" and sought to get out of them to save money, how could you try and move me to go to an annual deal? I had to re-read your comment., and I did not like your response at all. I did buy one more deal for a month for myself, at 6.99. I imagine you will be in Eugene on Saturday. The game Rich Brooks told the story about that happened in 1988, is a game I was at. It is probably the first time I saw Don James lose in Autzen. He owned the ducks; only 21 of 24. victories. Later the Ducks had a string of 13 in a row over the MONSTERS OF MONTLAKE. ( a term I just heard of from some Husky fan) and nobody could believe it happened. I was a happy guy for 13 years! Now that my black-mini jaguar kitty, a rescue male, , named Shadow , has survived his second critical ordeal of a total internal blockage, at a combined vet bill of only 8,000 dollars,, I thinkI I'll just hang here in Pdx, keep being his butler, 24/7 at our home in sw, and see the purple rein get beat in Autzen again. Husky free nw, , no dogs allowed, and I thought a montlake monster was a jv girls volleyball team from Mercer, Island, Nobody I know had no idea either of what it was. pray that i will see the puppies eat dog food ith a rusty spoon on Saturday! No rain, cold temps, and a real dog fight for sure. Huskies claim they are favored, ( I do not go by spread for this one) am sure both teams will be fired up to say the least. Any day the Huskies lose to the Ducks is a SUPER DAY. Heard it is only 5.5 hours on I-5 from Eugene going north back home as a loser puppy. WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER, and I sure hope the freeway traffic for the mighty OSU game same day in Corvallis does not affect any purple cars limping home! GO DUCKS HUSKY FREE Nw NO DAWGS ALLOWWED unless they have four legs in our native state. I am confident, in my Ducks, even if the ghost of Don James hovers above in cyberspace trying to figure out what happened to his Huskies! GO DUCKS, and please do not have your season ruined by any purple alien invading Eugene,. I predict Ducks win in a massive dogfight, with many quirks and poor officiating , by only 24-21. never heard of a paragraph. never attended school. live under a bridge near downtown. Does -13.5 mean that it could be cold in Eugene on Saturday? Is that temperature in F or C? If you do not like reading my post, or you cannot understand it because of no paragraphs, then call up John Canzano. See your doctor asap. In the good old days, I saw Pac-8 football in Multnomah Stadium in Portland, Oregon in the 1960's. Dad took me. Gave me choice of being a Beaver or a Duck for life. Said I could be both, as a native Oregonian. Thank God I chose my Oregon Ducks! Have been a member of the Methodist church in Hillsboro, Or since 1963. Got first baptism there. Still have picture of that, and also certificate and letter from the pastor. Am a very strong Christian and I have never voted for a republican for President and never can do it. DUMP TRUMP 2024 if he runs or if he is not in federal or state prison. Voted against JoAnn Hardesy and am over-joyed she lost. If she had not been ignorant for years, been caught lying on national tv about seeing portland police allegedly setting fires during the BLM (Bureau of Land Management ) riots in spring 2020. How come many minority people cry the race card right off if things go against them? If you call me racist, please look in the mirror. Hardesy thought if she lied about her opponet, brought her race problems to light (she has alays been a strong racist and hates cops, and is just plain stupid.. In her debate on channel 8 last Saturday vs. her foe, her true colors came out from jump street. Good riddance to bad rubbish. I long for my native city, Portland, Oregon USA to come back. You cannot go downtown even during the day unless you are very brave. Hotels are closed, restaurants long gone, the inner city looks like a war zone. and our mayor is beyond useless. The only reason I voted for him is because his only opposition as a member of Antifa, is a strong white supremacist. and he tried 3 times for a GED but gave up. Ted is a horrible mayor, and I sure wish he had been up for re-election this year. Is that a paragraph if I put a gap in there.? MONSTERS FROM MONTLAKE? Is that a jv girls basketball team from Mercer Island,? HUSKY FREE ZONE NO DOGS ALLOWED at end of day my dream is to see the little puppies crying in Autzen and eating dog food using a rusty spoon. You do not get it about paragraps; is a free country and I can post ANYTHING I LIKE. I do not bet much anymore, but if you do, go to Spirit Mountain Casino in Grande Rhonde, Oregon; very close to Sheridan Federal Prison., in Sheridan, Oregon. Is a short hour drive from Portland, you can only bet cash in person, Don't notice the -13.5 if you pick Oregon , unless you are positive they bury the Huskies by 14. You bet the money line if you think the Ducks can have one more point at end of game than pups. To be a winner you take the Ducks on the money line. If you desire to win 100, you look at the money line, or ask the attendent in the sports booking area, the money line on Duck game. I am guessing, as a 13.5 point favorite, you might have to risk 200 or more. You can look it up online or you call them and ask on phone. So, you bet the money line If you in are a winner winner chicken dinner, you get your original bet back PLUS the 100 you won. You do not have to be concerned about anything after you place your bet; if you are victorious you can get your cash back at end of game. CASH ONLY IN PERSON, but you have only 365 days to take in your bet slip i(n person is best) and get paid! If you are a loser, and a monster from montlake, and you bet on U dub, and your undrpants or thong are purple or your hat or shirt or your car,you can use your paper bet slip for anything you want to I do not bet on or against my Ducks, unless some rocket scientist from Microsoft or starbucks, puts up cash on my tent's door-step and is positve about his purple rein being on top in the rain at Autzen on Nov. 12, 2022 I give him a check right then to cover my bet. There is NO POINT SPREAD, and I take the Ducks. I take his cash and stash it on me. I say my prayers as he gets back in his purple Bentley. GO DUCKS p.s. a MONSTER FROM MONTLAKE is an arrogant person that lives and dies in purple haze. they love to drive the short 5 or so hours back to Tacoma proper, still drunk, hating life, as their purple pups peed all over themselves in the pre-game exercises and forgot all their strategy. they read Don James purple book the next day and dream it is the good old days. James only came out on top 21 of 24 versus the little ugly ducklings! Thank you Jesus for Phil and Penny Knight's huge contributions to the U of O, and their giving goes far beyond just athletics. Ever heard of Knight Library, Hayward Field, Mathew Knight arena, Autzen Stadium, Rich brooks Field,? Not me. I only wear Nike Air Pegasus (special air pegasus in duck colors) model 39 and undefeated and brand new in Sept of this year. Do read SHOE DOG by Uncle Phil Knight and be happy you are a Duck! pps I lived in Eugene, Oregon when Phil was a runner for the Ducks. I saw him running around Hayward Field before Pre ran his last race there (which I saw in 1975) I liked his stride, and something about him was special for some reason. Ducks in a real dog fight, filled with high drama, poor officiating, odd twists and turns, super loud fanatics in Autzen, a purple section much smaller than the ole Don James days he brought down I-5 in busses, potentally one of the biggest games of the year for all of college football, and I just cannot wait. I long to see a picture of a MONSTER FROM MONTLAKE please Mr. Canzano!

Another fantastic article, in addition to the happy ending story last Thursday, great work! However, because I’ve been reading your work for the past couple years, as a subscriber by the way and I believe in your research, diligence, honesty and transparency, I’m still convinced Oregon and Washington go to the Big 10, while San Diego State, UNLV SMU and Houston join the PAC 12. Which from an entertainment perspective alone, is far more exciting to watch than the ultra boring Big 10 anyway. Love your writing!

"I lean toward picking the Bruins to beat USC (Nov. 19) at this point."

John, as a Trojan fan this pains me to say that I fully "lean" your way, also. Bruins will win that game in a whose-defense-is-worse affair. More importantly that outcome will give the Pac12 its best chance at the CFP: an Oregon-UCLA matchup on a neutral field. Advantage UCLA.

Expand full comment

Advantage UCLA? The Ducks was superior in every facet of the game when it played UCLA in Autzen and how many UCLA 'fans' who do not trip to Pasadena will trip to Las Vegas?

If it is the Bruins vs the Ducks I expect the majority of fans in attendance to be Oregon fans.

The thing that stood out is not that they believe the SCC is the best conference and they could make a sound argument for that.

It is they did not discount the other power conferences, look at the teams they where debating.

The fact is they just do not see any conference in west as anything but a BASKETBALL conference..

IN MY OPINION, NO EXPOSURE HAS DESTROYED THE CONFERENCE.

It didn't have to be like this. In 1983 the Pac and B1G should have just said 'NO" to SEC commissioner Roy Kramer's BCS idea.
