Coach Whitt is one of the top 5 coaches in College Football. Taking a Mountain West team into the Pac 12 and demonstrating incredible success is beyond noteworthy. Coach Witt is why Utah will be in a Super Conference. Without his guidance Utah could have been in the same situation Oregon State, WSU, Arizona etc find themselves today - I'm a UW Husky that is envious of a coach like Whitt. He's also a helluva good person...

That transition to Pac-12 was done right. Blueprint.

Utah was always a tough game. Will miss our battles with them. -a UW fan

Utah is in the exact same situation Arizona, Arizona State and Colorado are in right now. In the worst of the P4 leagues.

USC fan here but get real. B12 is solid top to bottom. My beef with B1G is the number of long dead programs.

Seriously? ASU sucks. UCF sucks. Cincinnati sucks. Colorado is horrible. So is Kansas. Houston is bad. BYU is average. Iowa State is average. Baylor is bad. You see any Florida States or Clemsons or even North Carolinas in that league?

No star power at all in that league without Texas and Oklahoma. It's the worst of the P4 leagues.

Kansas, while historically bad for a long time, was 9-4 last year. They have one of the best coaches in football and are among the favorites to win the Big 12 this year.

I'll see your North Carolina and raise you Utah and Oklahoma State.

Coach Whittingham is all that is good about college football coaching

Hope the Utes smash the Big 12

I wish more coaches used to him as an example instead of of being like Jedd Fisch

The best, most underrated college football coach. Gonna miss seeing the Ducks and Beavs play against those tough, disciplined, Kyle Whittingham teams.

Terrific interview - excellent questions and, as always from Wittingham, very thoughtful, insightful answers.

Witt is a legend. He's currently one of the top 5 college coaches in the country - maybe top 3. What he's accomplished at Utah is highly underrated - nothing short of one of the greatest coaching accomplishments in college football history. Additionally, he's done it right. No bending rules, fudging the truth, cheating with recruiting or any of the garbage you find at USC or other so-called "blue blood" factories.

Wonderful interview.

Best of B12 luck to the Runnin' Utes.

Win in Stillwater, defeat Arizona in SLC, and prepare for the B12 Champ Game. And a possible match-up with the Ducks in the Fiesta Bowl.

Great interview by Mr. Canzano. Always great to hear about the good in sports, not the bad and negative. A lot of "low life" sports journalists would have probably asked about the racist comments that Morgan Scalley once texted. But not Mr. Canzano. A few people that I was having lunch with today said the Mr. Canzano would probably have been a great "softball" player. I asked them what they meant by that, they replied "because of his 'softball questions' to Whittingham". They were surprised that Mr. Canzano didn't ask Coach Whittingham what his favorite color is, and what animal Coach Whittingham would like to be the most. But unlike my lunch companions I appreciate the way Mr. Canzano writes, positive, especially when it comes to his being a fan of our beloved Ducks and always writing so nicely about them.

Kyle Wittingham seems to be one of those great coaches who set an example that not just their players can follow. They set a strong example that people in their community and state can respect and emulate. More respect and success to him and his team!

Super Column John. Loved that you asked about his mom.

John Canzano's avatar

Thanks James. Hear so much about his dad... I hadn't asked him ever about mom. And I love that the cafeteria lady has a say in recruiting. LOL

That was/is priceless.

Great column! As a lifelong Ute fan who trudged up the stadium steps with my Dad and Grandpa in the 70’s to see my mostly mediocre Utes, it’s hard to fathom the journey to the current brand. Whit has built on what Ron McBride started and Urban Meyer juiced. Can’t wait for opening night kickoff! Thanks for the great writing.

Thanks for being here.

Utah '68. Whole different world now...enjoy it Utes. Great interview! Thank you.

Coach W's praise for his mother reminds us that while men do the "significant" things in life, women not only do them, too, but they hold things together at levels well beyond Big Achievements. Coach W makes it crystal clear: Without his mom holding that family team together, he and his siblings would not be the successful, whole people they are today. Great interview. Great guy. Great Mom.

Cam’s 7th season? What a 25 year old man playing against teenagers just out of high school? No more comment.

It's ridiculous. He hasn't been a STUDENT/athlete for the last three seasons.

Lanning said KW was his mentor and I've heard they are close... you can see they're

cut from the same cloth.

Love this guy and what he has been able to accomplish. Hope Utah wins the Big12. Go Cougs!

Nice interview with Coach W. I’ve always admired his “style” - is there such a thing as laid back intensity? He leads his team with great integrity, and is a good role model for his players. Thanks John.

I first met Coach Whit in 2006 when he was a brand new head coach. In 2022 I spent three days/ as an invited guest of Jim Harding who is the assistant head coach and head offensive line coach. The Utah coaching staff is elite. Their coaching mantra is elite. The culture is elite. TEAM and FAMILY.

Two Pac12 era coaches come to my mind when the criteria is underappreciated during their tenure: Whittingham and Mike Montgomery. The latter in particular. Though it is nice to see a column about the former.
