Damn it John.........ok, I'm done tearing up now. But......isn't this story what sports are really about and what they can do? Thanks for the reminder....especially after this year's trade deadline. Perspective correction accepted.
I had friends that worked as bellman/valet's at a couple of hotels downtown in the late 90's. I was with them in that garage on a day that I will always remember. It had an old fashioned elevator with exposed scissor style doors. That elevator stopped between floor and we were stuck. That was until a nice man slipped us a Leatherman and a screwdriver. We MacGuyvered our way out. We thanked him, returned the tools and he chuckled at the way we shimmied out of that old elevator. I never forgot that man, and until today I didn't know who he was.
I can't believe how big and how small this world is.
This story is so much more impactful than 99% of stories about athletes or celebrities. Thank you for sharing something that shows how humanity can live on!
I love all your articles, John, but the human interest ones are the best. This one was lovely. Thank you for sharing the story about your friend, Robert.
A great article, John, and a good reminder the highest achievement in sports goes beyond the TV highlights and box scores. Look into the face of the 10 year old you took to the game!
What a beautiful story. Your human interest stories are the best things you write. They -- unlike all the sports crap with the PAC this and that -- are important and really matter. Okay, your slamming of Paul Allen's Blazer people is a righteous interest, too. They really need to sell to Phil Knight. Paul Allen -- if he were ghost-like and could do a Scrooge like visit to his sister -- would tell her to sell to Knight and get the hell out of Dodge and let him go to work and save the franchise, a franchise that Paul Allen loved almost more than anything he owned.
Beautiful story. I am approaching the age where I think more about the type of grandfather I want to be. Definitely along the lines of Robert and your grandfather.

Thank you for this.
Humanity! Thanks for seeing the worth of people you encounter and then sharing it with us.
I think we could throw a dart in the arena and find a great story wherever it landed.

Beautiful story John🌈. Have you had any contact w his Taurus? It might be fun to follow his progression in life. Hopefully he is doing well❤️
His cousin reached out to me with some good news... "He’s doing just fine. Growing up."

For sure... those moments are golden.
Thank you for this. We all need a dose of pure love in our lives. You, Robert and Taurus remind us what it's all about.
They were a gift that night.... and still today.
A story behind or between the headlines. A JC staple. Thank you.
We should all have a person like this man in our lives.
Robert, salt of the earth. Thanks for the story. It helps.
Amen.
