Canzano: The lasting gift of Wayne Estes
Life is fleeting.
Wayne Estes grew up in a tiny mining town in Montana. He was a state champion discus thrower in high school and came to Utah State on a track scholarship. When he showed up in Logan, they called the 6-foot-6, 260-pounder, “Baby Huey.”
My new-world Pac-12 tour took me to Utah State this week. I experienced the first snowstorm of the year and watched the town shut down, except everyone just plowed through it all to watch the basketball game that night.
I learned about the legend of Estes on my trip. I’m embarrassed that I’d never heard much of the guy before. But I’ll never again think about Utah State basketball without Estes far from my mind.
He left us with a lasting gift.
