I studied for one year - 1981-82 Freshmen year - at Gonzaga before transferring to Oregon. Thought I wanted to be a sportswriter and landed a role at The Bulletin covering men's and women's hoops, baseball and rugby. Learned a ton but my career as a journo was short-lived. Did get to interview John Stockton and can confirm he was a red ass then, too. But Jack and Dan's is a great pub.

This is why sports have been a part of my life always: the stories.

Same. I love learning them and telling them.

Super article, John . Another textbook example of excellence in feature writing( I would have liked more background about Will's struggle with hypotonia--maybe in a separate piece or as an addendum to this story).

It's a good point. Will make a note to follow up.

You did it again John…my first tears of the morning.

Gonzaga is clearly one of the best programs in the country. I think their success is by finding young men like Will Graves. It will be interesting to see his next stop. Love the personal stories from behind the teams!

Excellent piece which illustrates that sports are about so much more than wins and losses.
