A lot of time and effort represented here, but it must be a lot of fun!
Regardless of the schools you love or hate, we’re blessed with a quality cross-section of good men coaching the PAC
Now Caleb Williams, on the other hand...hopefully he grows up soon. The TrojanHater in me isn’t surprised by his pomposity and I’m looking forward to his ego taking his whole team down with him 😎
How is he pompous? He’s self confident. He should be. He’s the reigning Heisman trophy winner. He’s literally the best CFB player in the country. He’s going to be the #1 draft pick. He’s a generational talent. I’d be a lot cockier than he is with that skill at that age. Remember 20 years old in college? Now imagine you are him. That talent. That fame. In LA. Already making $5m a year staring at a career in the NFL with several hundreds of millions ahead. Are you kidding me—-he’s pompous?? Do your research. About his foundation. How many Heisman winners took their oline to the ceremony. How many CFB players get to throw out the first pitch at Dodger Stadium and take their teammates on the mound with them. Do you know Caleb? Have you met him? I have. John has- ask him. Pompous? Ego? Ok bud. He’s young, Uber talented, smart, rich, handsome and black. I know that combo scares the sh## out of some ppl of a certain (cough) demographic. Stop hating dude.
affectedly and irritatingly grand, solemn, or self-important.
I do remember being twenty
I remember having mentors that reigned me
In and had my best interests at heart
All the fame, talent, money, etc. are even
more reasons to take a humbler approach
Self-confidence is a requirement for personal
success, not an excuse for not looking at
the bigger picture
“Ok bud. He’s young, Uber talented, smart, rich, handsome and black. I know that combo scares the sh## out of some ppl of a certain (cough) demographic. Stop hating dude.”
We only need to look to Vikings first round draft pick of USC Jordan Addison racing a Lamborghini 140 MPH in a 55 mph zone putting himself and others in danger. He has disgraced USC as does Caleb Williams when he paints f.ck Utah on his fingernails.
Here I disagree with JC first for voting for him for Heisman and for giving him a platform. I do not respect Williams and the Vikings should cut Jordan Addison immediately.
as a follow up I did just now listen to JC interviewing Caleb Williams. Williams did acknowledge he was going to be making some adjustments so that his fingernail messages would be more 'G' rated. He didn't offer up a full on apology to UTAH but he did acknowledge his impact on youth and that he wanted to set a better example. Thanks JC for asking this question. I'm willing to forgive and move and on but as Williams pointed out he doesn't care much what the public thinks but glad to hear some of his coaches are trying to help him make better decisions. Young people need good guidance.
Great job, John, with all of your Media Day coverage. I especially liked the one-on-one with the commish during your BFT radio show. One tidbit I took from that interview was the comment "Our media partners know who they value" when it comes to expansion. I know there is a school out there that ESPN loves from a football perspective and that's Boise State. I know all of the other factors tell us BSU has no chance at joining the Pac-10/Pac-12, but if ESPN and your media partners were to tell you they want Boise State among the expansion schools, do the league's presidents go along with it or are they stubborn and say "no way" because Boise State doesn't meet the academic requirements for conference membership. Makes you wonder what other school or schools the media partners have suggested if it isn't San Diego State or SMU.
Particularly enjoyed your exchange w/ Lincoln on Leach — and how Mike would hire who he thought was best for the job, and so many of these hires came from outside conventional circles. Mike was the Libertarian of NCAAF, and we’ll grow to miss him more with each passing year. I also agree w/ Chip’s take on college free agency vs. NFL, no need for 2 transfer windows!
Hope someone shows Penix how awesome PNW fishing can be vs. his hometown tropics. That probably won’t ever happen unless he decides to pick up a fly fish pole, and cast a line into the Rogue and or Smith River. More so, hope his little bro’s car troubles get cleared up soon
This is my favorite time of year. PAC-12 Media Day, leading up to the beginning of football season. My favorite interviews were Chip Kelly, for listening to him open up about his life outside of football and the hint that he may not be around next year. And, Jonathan Smith--for giving us insight in DJ's progress, and talking about his wife and family. And, for recommending the book "Failure of Nerve."
I read a summary of it and it sounds very intriguing. A definite "must read."
Regarding the media rights negotiations, on an optimistic day, I wonder if Kliavkoff discovered that by waiting he’s stumbling onto a chance to strike a really good deal beyond our expectations and wants to delay further in order to make a greater impact on UCLA and USC? Last minute shock and awe?
Plethora of sports riches for the weekend - thanks for all these BFT interviews. A ton of BFT, The Open and coffee...what could be better...as long as the coffee isn't Starbucks.
The Pac-12 (10?) is so very fortunate to have a wealth of great football programs, coaches and athletes...will once again overcome their amateurish, inept conference leadership.
Third world treatment of the women’s sand volleyball team is disgraceful and probably illegal under title IX. Time to not be putting the program at the back of the bus and step up to some kind of fair treatment presently. There has to be adequate money in the budget. AD’s do your job.
In the short term a new Pac-10 seems like a given. SDSU has now made its "separate peace" with the Mountain West and is going nowhere through the 2024/ 2025 seasons. So it seems like its Pac-10 or sign its media deals and then advertise for 2 university athletic applicants "ready, willing and able to start immediately." And clearly this is all in the hands of the media entities, not within the control of the Pac-10.
The thing is they have the two: SDSU and SMU. What hasn’t been covered? If the 10 P12 schools are worth, say, $32M/school, where does a 12 team league with Aztecs and Mustangs come in at?
George Kliavkoff said Friday that no deal would be announced at the conference’s football media day “on purpose, because we want the focus to be on football.”
The follow up from James Crepe of the Oregonian “Does that mean a deal is already done?”
“I think you’re reading too much into that.”
Tell me how Kliavkoff didn’t step in it right there? We aren’t going to announce a media deal today because we want to focus on football.... wait do you have one..... No ... What in gods green earth was that rhetoric of Western Civ. Message he just spewed? No bleep you aren’t going to announce a media deal if you don’t have one... but don’t act as if you do?!
Further he goes on to state that “I’m feeling better about talks now than I did prior.” Sooooo... based on that and all the president like Schultz’s saying the deal is imminent/coming soon for the last countless months; just blew that narrative to heck. Who is lying to who? What exactly is being told to the presidents and whom is drinking the cool aide and who is serving it?!
After last week's events, I went back and listened to your interview with Chip Kelly, in which he invited you to return to your roots in the Big 10. Chip is always ahead of everyone else, it seems.

Wow - thank's John. Obviously, you were staying to task and were not distracted by the lights and attractions of the city.
I came. I hydrated. I left.

You could be right.
strange, none of the interviews will load for me.
Click on the arrows?
Looking forward to seeing these when I get home later. Thanks for all the work you’re doing for us, John! We appreciate it!
Thank you.

Thank you for being here.
Cougs?
I have interviews with Jake Dickert and Cam Ward in the can. Couldn't get them in Friday's show because of the timing. Will post them.
👍
There is vapid and then there are college football media days that put the 'V' in vapid.
Regardless, thanks for the great coverage, JC.
Forget about Pac 12 media day. Todays article by James Crepa, Oregonian.live:
UO BEACH VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS DETAIL DISPARATE TREATMENT, SPARKING TITLE IX QUESTIONS
Rob Mullens, with his worthless answers, should be hung out to dry
Hope you will have some insight on this
Third world treatment of the women’s sand volleyball team is disgraceful and probably illegal under title IX. Time to not be putting the program at the back of the bus and step up to some kind of fair treatment presently. There has to be adequate money in the budget. AD’s do your job.
I’m calling BS that P12 recruiting is better than ever. Instability stinks.
I’m gobsmacked but unsurprised the Pac 12 presidents and chancellors belie a 10-team is league is smart for the short or long term.
I suspect they end up at 12. Could be negotiating publicly.
If they don't have a team to add that adds per school value, why would you grow?

'We have no media deal to announce and have decided not to announce it today.' Does anyone know where the Emperor's clothes can be found?'
However, I am keeping the faith that the Pac-10 will not only survive but that the conference could thrive with the right streaming deal(s).
Think they may have decided not to give specific updates... I dunno. I tend to think he'll be judged on the deal when it's announced.
It was a minor stumble. I think the event was overshadowed in general by the media stuff.
After last week's events, I went back and listened to your interview with Chip Kelly, in which he invited you to return to your roots in the Big 10. Chip is always ahead of everyone else, it seems.
