Having worked through the stages of grief on the fall of the PAC12, I have come to the conclusion that the next few years will be good for Oregon State. New opponents, new challenges, new opportunities. Let the other conferences sort themselves out and see what the landscape looks like in a couple of years. In the meantime, I'm enjoying the heck out of the resurgence of men's and women's basketball and looking forward to baseball. Go Beavs!

Hey, that kind of optimism isn't allowed by the doom and gloomers predicting the total demise of the Beavers!

Am I the only one who thinks we might have actually upgraded our football coaching position?

Yes, you are probably the only one.

Sorry but many. many OSU fans I've talked to and associate with are much more excited about Bray than they were about the previous guy. He's attacking recruiting with aggression not seen under the previous guy.

Expand full comment

I'm glad you're excited but you used the term "upgraded." With what, a guy who's never been a HC? In fact, Bray has only been a coordinator for one season! Now he may someday be a good HC, but to call him an upgrade is a reach Stretch Armstrong would be proud of...

Smith had never been a head coach when he replaced Anderpants. I'd say we upgraded there, no?

I'll bet we don't call for any more fake field goals on the last play of the half, or any more stupid fake punts in our own territory or throwing deep when we only needed two first downs to get into FG territory to win the game.

Sounds like an upgrade to me.

Comments from Duck fans on Beaver threads are always so enlightening.

I'd also say you upgraded from Anderson...based on actual performance, not just hope, which is all you have now. Look, I'm pulling for Bray. I buy Beaver season tickets and root for them when they're playing anyone except my beloved Trojans. I'm just saying Bray is an up-and-comer, not an upgrade. Big difference...

Trent's Dad. Craig, was a D1 Defensive Coordinator sinece Tray was a kid. He knows the X's & O's, so it remains to be seen if he can manage a large scope Football Operation.

The coaching successes so far speak for themselves.

Ahhh the ubiquitous duck fan trying to insert negativity when Beavs fans are happy.

Scott, I did not know you left the dark side and became a Ducks fan! Congratulations - I told you being a condom was a curable disease. Welcome aboard, brother!

Ha! No, just making a comment. Seems like yesterday I was reading Beaver fans touting Jonathan Smith as a top-3 coach in the Pac-12 along with Whittingham and DeBoer. Some even as the best developer and tops at doing more with less. I guess wearing Beaver gear turns one into a great coach. Apparently it's working for Bray, too.

Beavs fans can turn quickly and cannibalize their own. I do have to say, Jonathan Smith did handle the whole situation with as little class as I've ever seen...with DeBoer's bailout a close second.

Not easy to pass along a compliment to Beavs fans...you got ambushed and called - oh, lordy - a Ducks fan. Take a look at the infantile comments I received today - LOL! Some of these dipwads are about 12 years old.

You are the #1 Douchelord of all time.

Very mature and insightful, Chuckie...you represent all Beavs fans or just yourself?

My, lord, what a laughingstock...

Yes, one last piece of business today John, #16 Utah. I like OSU's chances for the Gill Grand Slam as Nick Daschel calls it. In the face of NIL, Oregon State, Wayne Tinkle and Scott Rueck are old school, and I like that too.

Expand full comment

It's interesting to note Sunshine that on John's earlier column regarding the Ducks you rail on the program for supposedly buying players. But no criticism of the Beavs for upping their NIL deal with Pope in order to keep him in Corvallis. I wonder what the difference is?

Expand full comment

"Ducks....supposedly buying players"? Are you serious? You don't think Oregon buys football, MBB and WBB recruits/transfers? You're in a level of denial that's saved for Duck sports fans.

Expand full comment

The difference is that the Beavs do not go out and recruit players using NIL. The DamNation collective has been pretty upfront that their NIL funds will be used for retention, not recruitment.

Thats the difference.

Good to see both Beaver squads have recent success. Moving forward I’d hope the basketball Civil War can be saved and preferably played at the Moda Center as a back to back men’s and women’s doubleheader. I think that would keep fan engagement high for the basketball programs at both schools.

I like the idea...

Though wouldn't be great for season ticket holders in Corvallis and Eugene. Non-conference slates in both locations have been generally feeble.

Love the moral compass exhibited by Pope. Gratitude for the school that took a chance on him. It’s sure paying off for Beaver fans!

And as far as the Women’s team; Wicked!! They will go far.

Thx John once again.

Both the men’s and women’s programs at OSU are fun to watch. High energy, and both play with effort.

Duck fan here, inserting no negativity. Oregon has their own problems in hoops to deal with. Props to Beaver men and women for fighting through the maelstrom.

Luckily the PAC 12 conference network

hasn’t stopped covering the league’s final basketball season. Bill Walton proudly

used the phrase “the PAC 12 conference

of Champions” during the entire Thursday

broadcast in Gill. He spotlighted the rich

OSU history repeatedly. This coming

from a UCLA legend.

Happy for Beavs fans, they've had nothing but bad news and lousy decisions thrown at them since August. Beavs coaches and players are working hard and deserve the great results they're getting in basketball.

This from a Ducks fan.

Thanks for the class and positivity! TRR!!

I was at the WBB game against Colorado on Friday night. The Lady Beavs did not play as well as they could have and still controlled the game.

We twice got excellent news, and great decisions, first from a Washington District Court judge and then again from the Washington Supreme Court.

You asked what is it with OSU. My money is on culture and hard work. Much like J. Smith during his tenure. And Pat Casey with baseball. It's a good formula.
