The reality is Oregon has been blown out 4 out of their last 5 games. Utah twice, Oklahoma (Oklahoma dominated the game) and now Georgia. Not just losses but blow outs. Reality check that they are not close to the top programs in the country which is interesting with several great recruiting classes. It appears there is something deeper than X’s and O’s

Those of us who lived through the Ducks of the 1970s and 80s know better than to despair. Oregon rose from nothing then and will again. Newer fans don’t understand what it was like to sit in an empty stadium watching the Oregons get pummeled week after week. Those days were hopeless. They are far far from it today. The Ducks will be back.

I will never forget sitting in the pouring rain watching the toilet bowl 0-0 tie when I was a kid.

wasn't there a miserable fog game in Eugene also...you couldn't even tell who was playing.

Expand full comment

It rains endlessly in Eugene, the concession food is ordinary but the communal yelling for the Ducks is great.

The gap between Oregon’s brand/all that comes with the Nike affiliation and the actual on field performance is big and seems to grow every year. We are in danger of becoming Tennessee (not that bad yet, but trending); overrated, overhyped, entitled, with players who think they’re great because of gear, facilities, media hype, and wins that happened ten years or more ago. The gap between OR and UGA shouldn’t be as big as it was today, not if the reputation and hype are accurate; the spread was -17.5, not -40.

I think a better comparison is Texas.

That’s a good call. I should have thought of them too.

I heard the Ducks lost the 4.5 million appearance fee because their plane was fogged in in Eugene, and so the game was called off. . We got Nike and I love uncle Phil, and all he has done for the Ducks; his book too, but we have not had a football team since Mike Belotti and Chip were here. I like Lanning as if we can just beat the Fuskies in Eugene, and the Chipster too this year, we will be fine. If the big bad Beavers beat us, I will just pretend I chose them over Oregon 60 years ago. Go Ducks and miss me with recruits; until they play and perforem they are just a pipe dream!

I’ll answer your question John, Oregon is ordinary & Lanning is no Kelly! This looked like a Georgia scrimmage & the Ducks were the second & third stringers. Don’t give Oregon too much credit suggesting they could be the dragon next week. How about they start with showing up & getting off the bus?

Expand full comment

That would be a good start.

Expand full comment

The way the Ducks played...way over matched..you can "show up"..but like you said about Lanning's FB state title game...desire with average skills doesn't defeat superior skills. Would be like John Canzano pitching to Mike Trout and expecting to strike him out.....

Okay. It was a nasty loss. Let's not beat the boys with a stick. Let's encourage, have hope, and strive to do better, stay loyal, and be supportive fans. These are proving grounds. For growth and learning. And not just for the kids.

Not gonna lie. I really expected more from this defense.

same. they got flattened.

Expand full comment

I’m not being a smart aleck but why? Utah exposed it pretty badly last season. Cristobal recruited but I’m not a believer that he developed.

Expand full comment

That’s the point isn’t it? Lanning made his bones as a defensive genius. I really expected so see more.

Expand full comment

None of us expected this. But he didn’t inherit much.

Expand full comment

Didn’t inherit much ? Hasn’t a Oregon had top 10 (ish) recruiting classes the past 4 years ?

Expand full comment

But he didn’t develop them. That’s why Utah smoked them twice last year.

Expand full comment

I agree and I think a great example of that is only two or three players were drafted from that vaunted recruiting class. I think there is something else to it as well. Feels like Texas. Great looking players on paper but apparently not a lot of development and grit. Utah players are not as highly recruited in regards to rankings but they play hard!

He just road Kirby Smart's coattails for a couple years.

Being humbled isn't a bad thing, overall. It stings and stays in your mind. But if the Ducks ever become the team they hope they can be, they'll use today as a ladder.

Agree. Good medicine sometimes. But man... that was dismal.

I thought the defense seemed to just stand around a lot.

Last season I was horribly disappointed. I saw a team that lacked cohesion and gave up. I didnt see oregong give up. I saw Oregon get out played. Dan got out coached. And one thing the Georgia head coach said at the end of the first half Oregon hasn't punted it away, which was true they threw it away. I saw a lot of positives from this team. And I saw lot of negatives. I honestly thought I saw better play in this route than I did last season. Dan needs to grow as. Ahead coach this could help him. But your right Oregon isn't good enough to play at national championship caliber this year. I hope they wake up take there positives from this game shore up the negatives and rally. They have a tough season I could be ugly but I'm a duck fan I've seen uglier than this.

I surely didn't expect any other outcome to this game. We were 17 point underdogs and that is something not to be overcome..I am 100 percent a duck fan and always will be - win or lose.

Ducks had a few decent drives until they ended in mistakes...

The hype over Lannings defense is going to take a couple of games to

get over.

They got exposed, but how much of that was Georgia? I dunno.

Georgia looked awesome and I felt a little bad for the Duck D getting hung out there.

The Duck offense looked, frankly, terrible.

Work to do, for sure.

You felt bad for the defense? At least the offense moved the ball a little bit keeping the defense off the field. The D

Didn’t stop anyone all day. 9-9 on third downs? Those are scrimmage numbers. The offense was not the main problem today

The “main problem” was the entire team.

Outmatched everywhere and the O couldn’t even punch in a garbage time TD

Blame covers every single aspect of the team

They need to look at Butterfield or Thompson. Both have stuck with program waiting for a shot. Plus both were ranked among the top 80(ish) recruiting nationally.

Well, Chip Kelly had a really ugly debut game, and that worked out ok. Still, Ducks have been outscored 201-90 combined in their last 5 games. They have a long way to go to being a CFP team.

Expand full comment

Agreed…. Honestly I think #11 is a stretch for them right now. Maybe top 25 somewhere, but this is not an “almost top 10” team right now.

Expand full comment

Our offense looked predictable and couldn’t run the ball. Our defense is really in need of an identity. They are not physical or hard hitting. And each and every coach needs to start looking at their position and figure out if they’re playing the right kids … 5 Star or 3 Star. A kid that wants to make plays. Change will be needed ASAP.

Maybe Oregon is no longer a loss in the Pac-12, but Arizona may no longer be a win.

Never should have even scheduled a “neutral site” game against Georgia in Atlanta…. Do u think Georgia would ever play a “neutral site” game against the Ducks in Seattle…?

Oregon should just stay in their own backyard. And occasionally do a Home and Home with a Big Ten or Big 12 school… i.e. Ohio State, Baylor and Oklahoma State.

Stay out of the Southeast!!!!

$4.5 million appearance fee

Expand full comment

I guess the question you have to ask is what’s more important…? 4.5 Million more Dollars to an Athletic Program that is already ripe with cash —- or to preserve and protect the optimism of an entire Football Season. Simply put Oregon’s 2022 season is over before Labor Day because It doesn’t matter what The Ducks do for the next 3 months — this embarrassing stain will tarnish any success they have.

Expand full comment

Agree with your premise but if your going to be a top program you have to go on the “road” to play. Can talk about being National Championship contender without playing big games. Yes Alabama never leaves the SE (except to go to Texas this year) but they already have the credibility and will ultimately play Georgia.

It was a big payday for Oregon

That's right. Stay on the west coast with the kids. Big boy ball is played in the southeast.

I didn't expect a win today, but I certainly wasn't expecting to get embarrassed, either. This is when leaders emerge....players and coaches. We'll soon see who gets up when knocked down and who doesn't.
