Absolutely love these kinds of stories. John, I couldn't be happier with your new writing endeavor. I find myself checking my inbox regularly to see what new story you have shared. Keep up the great work and thank you for giving us a glimpse of life beyond the playing field.
Stories like this are why I subscribed. Not for Duck stories but for good stories and great writing. I kind of had a feeling that your writing on this platform would be less inflammatory or divisive or whatever adjective you want to use. I am sure you will still have some opinion pieces that rile some people up but you don't have to now which, again, is why I subscribed. I never thought I would say this but I actually look forward to seeing your name in my inbox. 😁 Now if we can just get Jason Quick to start writing again...
I loved this story of Dan Lanning and his family, in rural Missouri. As an "Oregonian" since 1979 and as a Duck alumnus, i care very deeply to what transpires in our state and with the Ducks. I soared with Chip Kelly's offense vision and Mario's in the trench's mentality. I was somewhat skeptical of a defensive guy with no prior head coaching experience. He has won me over, his emphasis on his players, and his commitment to the program and his appreiation for the opportunities affordded to him in Eugene. He strikes me as a wonderful human being, wonderful father and great coach. it appears he leads with integrity, honor and disipline. The Pac 10ish will be caught unaware of the defensive juggarnaut he is building
Fabulous, John. Again. You were smart enough to let storytellers tell great stories themselves. Not all writers are able to put their egos aside long enough to do that.
Now this is a great sports column! Life is more than about winning...it is definitely how you play the game, and life is about playing it well. Thanks for your insights into Lanning, and I hope he does well with football as well as with life.
As a longtime Duck fan, I appreciate your efforts to share stories that bring their fans together. When I graduated from Oregon in 1957, it was the first time since about 1916 that Oregon played in the 1958 Rose Bowl under Coach Len Casanova. It was a momentous occasion, but a sad one as they lost to Ohio St., 10-7 on a last minute field goal. Over the years, I have been able to follow the Ducks on TV and now we have you to bring us along with stories from the Duck world. Thank you for bringing along for the ride.
THIS. Absolutely brilliant. Getting to know the people that we root for is one of the most important reasons that I read sports journalism. And John, you're one of the best at it. Thank you. Absolutely love Dan Lanning and all that he is about. I really don't see how he can't be successful. Everyone that I've ever known that is acutely focused on giving and encouraging others has been wildly successful. Let's hope we get to enjoy the show for a long, long time. There is no substitute for enthusiasm and this kid has it in spades. Georgia might be surprised at what meets them on the field in a few days...
Your a far better writer now as an independent journalist. Money is very tight here and I am tempted to cancel my subscription and then you publish another great story! Dan Planning is a man I can cheer for and I will except when they play the Beavers. I will be really pissed if Knight leads them away to the Big10. It would be an act of desertion of the highest order to all their fellow PAC12 members. DON'T GO!
Based on this article, I wish the very best for Dan Lanning. The Ducks - not so much, but it will be fun to observe what Lanning can do with the great talent they have on the team.

Thank you Bill. I am having a blast. I appreciate that you are here for it.

Thank you Dan. Agree on JQ. He's a talent.

Solid family... interesting to see how different the coaches over the years really are. Thanks for being here.

Awww, thanks Howie. Appreciate that you are reading my work. Means a lot.
It's my pleasure. Literally. Every single day.
Another great column John. So good to get insight on Oregon’s new head coach that we otherwise wouldn’t have. Go Ducks!
Thank you Jerry.

Thank you so much Don.

Thank you Forrest. Appreciate this note.
Man, I hope he and the team do well this year. It'll be bumpy, but he's the kind of guy you really want to succeed.
Thanks Jim. Appreciate it.
Thanks again for some life stories in sports! I am a Beaver grad but will root for ducks except when we play the Beavs. Great article!
Thank you Dave. Means a lot that you are here, reading.
Wow. Great story, wonderfully told. The jerseys don’t make any difference here, but I’m glad they are yellow and green.
Thank you David.
There you Go again, making it very difficult to cheer for “whoever is playing the Ducks.”
I just like telling good stories... Lanning's parents did the heavy lifting.
JC, that's just flat out 100 brilliant writing.
Thanks D.

Thank you Walt. Really. Thank you. Means a lot.
Another gem, JC. I love seeing good people succeed - and Dan Lanning is good people.

thanks Ray. Well put.
