Canzano: No mystery, Texas State aims to matter in Pac-12
Conference officially launches on July 1.
Kelly Damphousse’s mother was an orphan. She was dropped off at the orphanage by a single mother, who was struggling to raise a child on her own. Years later, in the ninth grade, Damphousse’s mom packed, slipped out the door, and ran away.
She fell in love and got married.
They tried to start a family.
After several failed pregnancies, they adopted a child. That’s how the President of Texas State University ended up in his family. Damphousse shared that story in the comment section of this publication on Mother’s Day.
“My mom wasn’t perfect,” he told me on Wednesday, “but who is?”
I called Damphousse to follow up and check on the Bobcats’ trajectory in the new-world Pac-12. The school and the conference are knee-deep in planning.
The Pac-12 officially relaunches on July 1. It still needs to put the finishing touches on its football and basketball officiating plans. There are some sports sponsorship angles to tie up. Also, the conference basketball tournament formats and venues need to be locked down.
“It’s all getting very close,” a league source said.
I have details on all this.
