John, thanks for the bit about becoming a high school official. Yes, there is some abuse but the positives far outweigh the negatives - lifelong friendships, giving back to the kids, staying in shape and some pocket change! Remember... without officials... it's only recess! See www.newofficials.org.

You’ve quoted multiple times that the entire state of Idaho has only 517,000 tv households. Where is that number coming from and is it possibly outdated? A quick google search shows 650,000 households in Idaho with a total expected population of 2,000,000 in 2022. Another google search of San Diego county matches your often quoted numbers. Idaho is growing like crazy, San Diego is not.

I’m not arguing that Boise state would be more attractive than SDSU…just that possibly it might be more valuable than its being given credit for.

While the Boise area has seen good growth, San Diego allows the Pac10 to have a presence in Southern California, and maybe bite back into the LA market some.

Which is why adding SD St should be an automatic. The questions are do you add just 1 more (and which one), for schedule balance, or is there enough need for inventory to need to add 3, and how large a discount do the additions take/accept? The answers to both depend on the distribution deal, which will define the need for inventory and how much money there is to distribute.

Excellent points. It's absurd to think or suggest there are over 130,000 homes in Idaho that don't have a tv.

However, even 650K is a relatively small number, which doesn't move the needle for those focused on immediate reach to large markets (only). But the missed point is growth vs stagnant. Cal & Stanford have had at best slow growth, in a mostly topped out market because they are hemmed in, and absurdly priced, whereas areas like Boise and Fresno have been growing by leaps and bounds for years, and show no signs of slowing down, for obvious reasons. They are located where there is room physically and economically for enormous growth. Good markets to lock up before someone else does, and/or it becomes a lot more expensive and difficult to do so.

That was the situation with Utah, and the Salt Lake Valley market, and much earlier, with the Arizona schools, when neither Tucson nor especially Phoenix looked anything like they do now.

Finally, someone notices the Taylor Swift connection. :-). But the real question John, did you have to research your reply or was that information already in your head?

Loved the first question and answer. And loved the Taylor Swift observation.

Just to note, it wasn’t the Ducks scheduling Georgia which was the problem, it was playing as poorly as they did and looking so disorganized. But I do think the PAC 12 schools need to question why they play these games when the deck is so stacked against them with the time zone change and the proximity of Mercedes stadium to the SEC fan base. Play in a true neutral location like Dallas or Chicago, or only do home and homes.

Anything going on with ACC?

Yes SDSU has twice the number of tv viewers in their market but Boise State has twice the number of viewers of their games than SDSU has of theirs.

$33 to $40 million in media rights. Not sure that will hold the conference together?

I’m an ACC guy, Tar Heel forever…everything ran hyper hot for a few weeks and now seems to be in deep freeze…Heels and Virginia to SEC or some sort of weird hybrid w PAC…seems travel costs would be prohibitive…btw, love your stuff- am in Charleston SC and paying attention

You are very critical of the trailblazer administration, but they have done very well in the two games they've played so far. I am particularly impressed by their defense. After seeing those two games, John, do you have a somewhat different view of their chances this year

It boggles my mind that PSU didn’t make more of an effort to work with Portland Public Schools on building a joint stadium as part of the Lincoln High School rebuild. Likely another example of inept leadership at the University.

There is a hickup for the NFL playing on Saturdays.

The Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 heavily restricts professional football on Friday Nights and Saturdays to protect high school and college football. Basically any NFL game couldn’t be broadcast if within 75 mile of a high school or college matchup. Restriction applies from mid-September to mid-December. NFL would have to try to push to get the law changed or get creative. Maybe put it on Amazon and test the bounds of the statute?

I still wish the restrictions were tougher on Fridays... going to miss broadctknf a state playoff game (prep) on the first Friday in November thanks to ESPN scheduling UW vs. OSU that night.

CFB's incursion on Friday (and Thursday) has definitely hurt HS FB significantly. But there was never any protection against that in the law. However, if the NFL encroaches on Saturday further, I fully anticipate even more movement into Friday and Thursday nights by CFB. And that ultimately cuts into the pipeline for the future at all levels.

One small data point: the Buckeye media I follow have said on multiple occasions if you stopped following the Ducks after the Georgia game you should know they turned that around since. They also gave credit to Autzen putting the Ducks over the top vs UCLA.

Also they've given a couple nods to the Beavers this season.

I still scratch my head why the team that makes the playoff doesn't get a bigger share of the League pie. Maybe i am missing something. If not, they need to correct this. Also, i just don't see SDSU making a sig. contribution the the League. After 2-3 years at the bottom, will the alums still watch. I think the eyeballs in SoCal will watch without SDSU. Pac 10 works for me. Dave M
