John, I am so honored and blessed by your tribute for my son Shoe aka Jack. He was a beautiful, funny, kind, sarcastic, talented, loving your man. His life mattered and to be able to carry on his legacy is something I will do until the day I die. Today he should be graduating from West Salem High School. Thank you for honoring his life and remembering him on a day he should be celebrating. I am forever grateful ❤️

I hope that you have a kind and peaceful day, Tammi. Kind to you and your loved ones because, surely, that is all in the world that your Shoe would ever want his memory to bring you. Kindness and peace. Bright light to you and yours.

Yes, I am crying! I had to stop reading to collect myself. John, you have no idea how close to home this column hits for me. Wonderfully written. Thank you for sharing “Shoe” with us.

There you go again writing from the heart. A person just knows “Shoe” Jack would have grown up to be an amazing man. Thank you for continually reminding us Sports are just that..Sports. But, the human spirit is what can drive us to heights unimaginable.

As the father of two grown sons I can’t imagine the pain that family went through dealing with this courageous young man’s illness.

I will certainly give my boys a call tonight and tell them how much I love them. Thanks for sharing John.

John once again you touch on the real human condition. It wasn’t political, it wasn’t controversial. It just shared a real life struggle. While the world is flailing around about getting people to jump on click bait, this story is real. Thank you!

Doing well, retired and we are living in Lebanon with my daughter, her husband and two granddaughters. Getting a little gardening done. Left Woodburn for Guam. Ended up being librarian and HS English teacher in Maupin on the Deschutes.

Thank you sharing such a heartbreaking but inspiring story. Couldn't help but also think about the children in Uvalde whose promising lives were also ended far too early

Beautiful. I use this all the time in memorial services: "You never really die if you live on in the hearts of your family and friends and people you have touched along the way." Shoe lives on.

My grandson is 10, has been selected to his Little League All Star team. I will never look at those kids again with out remembering Jack (Shoe) Schumacher and offering a prayer for his family. Thank you, John, for honoring his life and legacy.

Our son had a stay up at Doerbecher a couple years ago. I can only wonder if the Lego set he received was part of Shoe's legacy. I'm going to think that it was.

Wonderful column, John. Thanks for the tip on Amazon. At least we can help Shoe's spirit continue to reach out. ♥️
