Beavs were without starting center and wall of a man Van Wells (Do we know why?) and starting right tackle. We aren't deep in the Oline. So judging McCoy or our RBs for this game is not fair. (remember just the other two weeks when UO couldn't defend Gabriel?)

I've been around the CW (the game, not the tv channel) for nearly 60 years, and yesterday felt very much like the rivalry, at least as long as it was close. Several Ducks I interacted with seemed to think so too. The intensity ebbs when the competitiveness does, and that's also been the case with many lopsided editions in the past.

The Apple Cup was more of a rivalry because it was a close contest down to the wire. Reverse the scores and the Civil War would have been massively intense, and the Apple Cup would have turned into applesauce.

Edward Schwallie's avatar

I agree the 1st half was truly a rivalry. The Beav fans knew the Ducks were better but they were hanging in there. Even when the Ducks only got a FG in the opening of the 2nd Half there was still hope. I wore Beaver gear in my Club seat while my son & GF were in Duck seats in Duck colors up near the UO band. It wasn't much different than previous Civil Wars and the intensity only got crazy if the game was close.

September or November it's still ,a Civil Rivalry unless its not clear who is going to win and then it feels like a War. We will see that again no matter when it is played.

Is not the stadium new this year? Was the change in atmosphere partially due to the new stadium size and configuration? Never been to Reesers before or after. Just curious.

Not the stadium. The problem was the bombing of a 108-year-old conference for reasons of status. And that the comparison of resources was like a private school in Scio having to play Jesuit.

As a die hard Coug, I must admit that I was not very “happy” during the game (which I watched on Peacock). More like stressed out and terrified!! I have felt the same way for some games. BTW...why was this game at Lumen field vs at UW or at WSU?

Expand full comment
BackDoor's avatar

I think they "agreed" to a 5-game continuation. So, the "neutral site" at Lumen was the compromise instead of 3-2. There were some shared revenue projections on the neutral site game. Not sure how that worked out since attendance was about 80 percent of capacity.

Because the UW conference game home/road split went from being 5 home and 4 road in even years to being 5 home and 4 road in odd years, UW needs the apple cup to be in husky stadium in even years. But because it was in husky stadium last season WSU didn’t want to play 2 straight apple cup road games so a compromise was reached and they had the neutral site game this year to satisfy the needs of both schools

This problem was not created in the Civil War and thus they were able to keep it on the same home/road schedule as it was when both team were in the Pac

I’ve seen a lot of Civil Wars in person over the years, but this was my first in Corvallis since 1998. I swore that I would never return to Parker (now Reser) Stadium. Beaver fans were just too much. Even back then. After the second quarter yesterday however, the Duck fans were all I heard. While I hope the series continues, and finds a way to be competitive, I’ll enjoy this into the bye week. It’s a great day to be a Duck.

You were bold to go in 1998. It was pouring down rain that year (my last at OSU). And the Beavers put up an unexpectedly good fight and won.

I'm good if the series takes a break until after there are rules around pay for play that create some equality between schools. An uncompetitive Civil War may be desirable for Duck fans, but I don't think it is good for the State in general. Phil has done a good job turning Oregon into a semi-professipnal team (wonder why they don't publish the payroll?). It was obvious yesterday that JS left the Beavers in a massive rebuilding mode when he abandoned the team for the supposedly greener grass of Michigan State (he may have as long a year as the Beavers do).

As we exited the stadium, we walked past the Duck buses, including 10 or 12 Oregon State Police motorcycles, all parked in a neat formation.

I was struck to see that on each and every motorcycle, a motorcycle helmet in Oregon’s colors was attached. I thought to myself, aren’t these the police paid by ALL of the taxpayers of the State of Oregon, therefore, shouldn’t their helmets be standard issue, ie, neutral? As I walked past, a trooper smiled at me. I just said that I didn’t like the helmets. He said nothing, but his smile went away.

For crying out loud, did PK buy the state patrol too?

The Ducks played great, clearly the better team, but can’t the cops stay in the neutral lane?

Um. Let's be honest. One of those three is close to a quality win (if you count Maryland as quality, which is debatable). The Huangs apparently (because nobody knows for sure) haven't shown interest in providing substantial support for the OSU athletic program. But that $50 million contribution to the new tech center shows that they cares about the school.

Maybe somebody should sit down with Jen-Hsun and his wife (they're both OSU grads) and explain how putting OSU's major sports programs can have a positive impact on recruitment of students into technology programs. Not all of those interested in computer technology majors are nerds with little use for athletics. There are lots of smart young people out there for whom high profile, winning sports teams is part of their criteria when deciding which school to attend.

Phil Knight's investment in UO has no doubt paid off in ways that extend far beyond success in its major sports. It has no doubt led to huge amounts of grant money being received for other programs, including fields related to science and technology. It probably also has some positive impact on recruiting of professors -- some of whom care about a university's visibility and overall academic reputation.

If CJS would have stayed, I think the Beavers could have beaten the Ducks yesterday, but when Smith pulled the plug, it forced a complete reset of the Beaver team on both sides of the ball + the coaching staff. Given that was only 10 months ago, it was a bridge too far. We saw the Beavers hang in the first half, but missing 2 starting offensive linemen, their best WR and starting DB, the depth wasn't there and they wore down. Much like the job Smith faced in 2018, it's gonna take Trent Bray a few years to rebuild the Beaver depth chart. Despite the huge financial disadvantage with Oregon, OSU will figure out a way to be competitive.

I was trying to say the same thing on another article. I got defeated poor me beaver response. I’m a duck alumni. I’m also a native Oregonian. I was glad my team finally played to expectation most of yesterday, but you beat us in 2022 with the same resources. Money helps, but dues nit replace heart, grit and coaching. We duck fans do know what it feels like to be deserted by a coach we believed in. I hope you win out and rebuild and we return to a grind out match…September or November spoiler. Not all duck fans are bandwagon non-alumni who know it actually rains in autzen.

You honestly believe that resources are the same now for the Beavers as in 2022? Not just a loss of the head coach, but most of his staff, most of the key players, and most of the conference.

As circumstances stand, the Civil War will never return to a fair fight. Best to let it go entirely. Any Duck wins now are hollow and will continue to be. It means nothing anymore.

Mere's avatar

I meant the duck’s resources. I never said losing a coach, especially Jonathan smith was not a big blow. I’m saying don’t give up. You have been competitive and won plenty of games in the past with less resources and more heart or grit or fan belief. If I was in your shoes, I’d refuse to give up hope. None of us fully know what the future of college football will bring. The pac-12 has been fighting sec and big10 bias forever. The 12-game playoff eliminates a little of that. Money does nit necessarily buy championships. Coaching, heart, talent and resilience do. Way more examples of the latter than the former. It’s not happening now. But it can in the future. Please fight! Pessimism will not win in the end.

The playing field has been off for a while, just not in the same way, yet you still persevered. You can have your year too. But not if you give up. Boise state certainly doesn’t act like they are doomed.

Jean Southworth's avatar

I appreciate your kind tone, Mere, but what I say is not pessimism. It's reality.

The disparities of money and conferences have become insurmountable and will only worsen.

I think I've moved in my grief process about the conference implosion from anger to acceptance, and that's a healthy and honest and realistic place to be.

What you say about effort and hard work making a difference in the Civil War made some sense in the past, but no more. It's like telling a 1 A high school football team that if they just work real, real hard, they can beat that big 6 A school down the road. It's unfair to even suggest such a thing.

Far better for everyone to fully move onto the new normal and leave the increasingly disheartening Civil War remnant in the past.

I'm still riding high from the Apple Cup yesterday. I was in Section 326, which is in the SW corner of Lumen Field, so the game-sealing defensive stand unfolded right in front of me. Cathartic is the perfect adjective to describe my emotions after the clock hit 0:00. I locked arms with other fellow Cougs in my row and we collectively and spontaneously belted out the lyrics to "Back Home" as we watched the sea of crimson flood the field. In that moment these folks weren't strangers they were family. I lost count of the number of photos and videos I took of the field afterwards. Oregon v Oregon State is a football game, that’s all it is! Some fans need to put things in prospective. None had anything to do with their team winning or losing. They threw no passes and scored no touchdowns. For some reason there are some fans that have an emotional need for their team to win.

When their team wins not only does it make them happy but it also gives them a sense of worth and

a feeling of elevation over the losing team’s fans.

Some fans wear their team’s victory with graciousness others are hard to be around.

Remember it is just a game and you literally had nothing to do with the outcome!

I found this on-line: Service academy athletes are not allowed to accept Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals. This restriction is due to federal law, which classifies these students as employees of the government because their tuition and housing are funded by the government. As such, they are subject to ethical codes that prohibit using their public office for private gain, including NIL engagements. Seems like service academies will be impacted by this in ways that doesn’t apply to other schools.
