"Stone cold". "Brass balls". "Steely determination" Whichever euphemism you want to use, fits. This is why I love Coach Smith, a new and improved version of Dennis Erickson. Aggressive and fearless to the end. I love the way he played Tedford with the timeouts and play changes. I am sure his players do, too.
It looks like another Pac-12 season of cannablism is being cooked up again. I wonder how many conference losses the Pac-12 champion will have in December.
People seemed to be worried about what would happen to the 10 remaining Pac-12 teams, especially OSU and WSU, while the Big 10 played Asteroids with the conference.
In the meantime, the "B1G" looks like their teams are imploding and OSU and WSU are making a statement.
Nebraska just fired Scott Frost. I feel bad for Frost, as the problems at Nebraska go way beyond just him. UCLA and Chip Kelly should be taking a long, hard look at what's happened to the Cornhuskers since moving over to the B1G. If the Bruins stayed put the Pac-12 could just replace USC with SD State and call it good. Honestly, USC should reconsider too now that access to the playoff is being expanded, and this move is a complete loser for all sports beyond football, and maybe men's basketball. Hopefully the Pac-12 is also getting media rights numbers for a conference that still includes one or both of the LA schools.
LA schools ere smart to get out of pac-12. Is called $40 million more each per year. Unless ESPN hands a new big deal to them for night games, they are doomed..
How the playoff expansion relates to USC’s decision is an angle I hadn’t considered. I wonder if that would have changed anything if it had been approved last January…
The monetary difference is still substantial, but how much closer if the media rights included USC and UCLA? Also, would the Pac-12 give the LA schools a larger share beyond just letting them keep more of any post-season money? The path to the playoff is much easier for USC in the Pac-12, for sure. UCLA will just end up being a punching bag for Ohio State, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, etc. The LA schools don't join the Big-10 until 2024. The Pac-12 shouldn't give up until then.
UCLA is a combined 13-4 (76.5%) against the Big Ten and SEC this century, including wins over Alabama (twice), Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee (twice), Nebraska (twice), Texas A&M, LSU, plus Oklahoma and Texas (twice). UCLA will be just fine in the Big Ten.
Glad Beavers are playing in Multnomah Stadium! My brother took me to lots of those games in the good old days of Joe Francis! Haven’t liked the Orange & Black since. Go Ducks!!
Good one!! Listening to Mike Parker, reach for the radio to turn it off 4 or 5 times. Kept thinking one more play. I believe Mike was the happiest person in that stadium at the end of the game.
Oregon State also was Jeff Tedford's nemesis at Cal in 2007 when the Bears were on the doorstep of being ranked No. 1. All they had to do was win the game and they lost on the last play because of a poor decision by the quarterback. Team and eventually the program feel apart after that and has never recovered.
John - I'm curious on your thought on how much the Covid season hurt the PAC 12. I know the Big 10 didn’t play either until the final 6 games but the impact on recruiting and perception of recruits as the SEC, ACC and Big 12 played a full season. Gave those teams an entire year to develop including organized conditioning and coaching. I don’t recall if they were allowed to recruit. I was recently speaking to a friend in a Texas that has a son being recruited by several schools including PAC 12 and they told me they eliminated the PAC 12 schools as they are not as committed ( This was before the USC announcement) to playing.
Also I have always found it interesting that The PAC 12 didn't like playing at night but the rest of the country does it all the time. The 4:30 / 5:00 pm PST games in the SEC,ACC and Big 12 that we have all watched for decades is 7:30/6:30 in their time zones. Being a PAC 12 homer living in the SEC land and the Central time zone the reality is this part of the country wouldn’t watch the PAC 12 if it was competing with their conference unless it’s was highly ranked teams playing each other.
Agree that the late-night window is now the conference's friend. Also think the covid season hurt the Pac-12 but I think it was trending that direction anyway. Certainly didn't help.
the governors of california and oregon mandated that the pac-12 could not practice or play games when covid first started, the big-10 and SEC played full schedule, and Alabama won natty and went undefeated., pac-12 played six games that year. and Alabama 13. This set the pac-12 back to farther behind the the big boys in football.
I couldn't agree more. I get it and I'm not a fan either. However, games routinely start in the East/Central time zone at 7:30 or 8:00 PM. It's normal here.
UCLA is headed for Nebraska fate big money but poor team. .Aztec potential Pac12 wannabe has worst team (not talent ) I have seen in 10 years. Could really use a guy like Scott Frost as OC. at San Diego State. (knw averaging 85% yards per game passing The OC as a buddy hire by Hoke. His RPO is RIP.
I think UCLA is going to struggle to compete in the top half of the Big Ten. I am not convinced the Bruins can regularly be in the top half of the Pac-12, but maybe this move causes UCLA to invest more heavily.
That’s why UCLA is a combined 13-4 (76.5%) against the Big Ten and SEC this century, including wins over Alabama (twice), Michigan, Ohio State, Tennessee (twice), Nebraska (twice), Texas A&M, LSU, plus Oklahoma and Texas (twice). Lol
playing in the Rose Bowl as their home stadium with Chip and $40 million more dollars will make a huge difference. Kelly has proven he is a good college coach.
They recently upgraded their football facilities. I do not know what you can do with the Rose Bowl? I should add that I meant SDSU has it's worst team in 10 years but still viable for realignment. Love you work John.
The Rose Bowl fairly recently got a $200 million upgrade and is a great place for football. It needs nothing. It is almost twice big as most Pac-12 stadiums. Beavs only hold 25,000 for this year, and USC will beat them in two weeks. in Corvallis
cavernous? only if it has a smal lcrowd; not on january 1st for rose bowl. also, when ucla plays good teams, I have ben there and it is a great place to watch football.
UCLA will be just fine. The Chipster is a proven coach where Scott never was. UCLA and USC were smart to leave a sinking ship. It is called big money and it rules the sports world, led by ESPN. Pac-12 will never catch SEC in football unless they get big money fast.
Ward had an uneven game again for WSU, but did a great job at the end and had a nice check-down for the go-ahead TD. Also, the atmosphere in Madison wasn't too much for him, considering the attendance yesterday exceeded the total amount he played in front of all of last season. Also, the Cougs D looks legit. How far could they have gone during Leach's tenure if they could have paired a defense like that with some of those air-raid offenses?
My two locks left are Tamoa Bay plus 3 tonight, and Denver -7 for monday night. Tom Brady has never lost to the Cowgirls and is 6-0 against them. Love my sister a lot, and even though I did not see her, I went 1-1 for college yesterday, and owe her one kiss.. The orange crush will beat the chickens on monday night! Seahawks in toilet, Huskies will be there starting next Saturday, and Mariners might not make play-offs for year 26 in a row. Go Ducks; Huck the Fuskies.
Thanks John. Yesterday every game I saw was great! Love the Steelers, and their coach and always the way they play! Their game was awesome. KC and SD looked good, and watching the Bears play in the heavy rain, and win, and play well. , was way cool too! Tom Brady looked good. I have never liked Dallas, and their owner does not know football. at all. He is only owner who has no general manager. The 90,000 fans were not too happy., but I sure was! The cowlgirls have not won a super bowl in only 27 years! Maybe Jerry Jones can go get Colin Kaepernick; a true fit , since he now has no qb for weeks. I said before that Mr. Canzano or myself could recruit if we worked for Alabama coacn Nick Sabin. Now I am just as excited to see Monday Night Football. Seattle is going to regret having no qb or defense. John Elway, the President of the Broncos , can help Russell Wilson. The latter just signed a $250 million, five- year deal. Watch Denver not only win tonight, and please remember what happened when they got Peyton Manning.! Wilson is still one of the best qbs in the game now, up there with Rogers, Mahones,, and of course Brady. This Thursday Kc plays SD; should be real good. The Ducks and BYU should be good. You are never supposed to wager more than you can afford to lose. I put up already all I have on USC beating oregon State in two weeks. If I lose, I might have to pitch a tent downtown. I will put it in front the foreclosed Hilton on Broadway, I have stayed there, and I like Hiltons a lot, and Westin Benson hotels too! The Beavs will not beat Utah, or Uw, and I have them losing at least four games. The other iat Stanford. More on college games later! Thanks, again, John, for inspiring me, and I am now bald too! Donnie Duck aka THE junior John Canzano!!

Loving your articles, reading everyone,,, sometimes twice!
that means a lot to me. I'm glad you're here for it.
Go Beavers.......................and the Baltimore Orioles also

it was interesting listening to the FOX (i.e. B1G Network) try to explain away the Wisconsin loss to a PAC 12 team.....

The photo I liked best was the one not taken. Me in the alumni band.
that's tremendous. I may have one in the archive.
No worries! I got plenty! Fun playing with the kids.

Own the late night window

Define late night
Nothing like getting home after a 7:30pm PST start at midnight…
GO DAWGS

I hope the Pac 12 comes back!! Just see if jokers ESECPN wake up.
BYU beating #9 Baylor is going to be a 'real' test for Oregon next Saturday.
Going from a Monster to a Cupcake to a 'peer' should tell us where the program is.
The OSU/Fresno game was a lot of fun. Fresno must recruit players that can't make the
academics at P5 schools even though they look the part.
Agree on the test. This is the biggest test yet. The Georgia game wasn't a game.

I thought he was good enough... especially on that stage. The defense was special.
