Again, John, you have given us access to information we otherwise might have never seen. Bill Walton, an active and never ceasing face of the "Conference of Champions" presents a very thoughtful and inclusive summary of the situation. I personally support his every word and appreciate Bill stating my feelings, but from a much more relevant platform. Thank you Bill, thank you John.
...these same proponents of moving to the Big 10, are the first people I have ever encountered in my life, who have claimed economic hardship and limitations in Los Angeles, and that the solution lies in the Midwest.
They won two Super Bowls, are one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world, and play in the greatest athletic facility in the history of mankind. (None of which would've happened if they stayed in Anaheim.)
St. Louis was a dumpster fire for the Rams... so if I'm understanding you, UCLA will move to the Big10, it will be a catastrophe, and then they can come back to the Pac12 and be heroes? That's the recipe for their success?
Staying away from losers -- the City of Anaheim in the Rams' case; the Pac-12 in USC's case (and to a lesser extent, UCLA's case because they are mostly along for the ride) -- is in fact a common recipe for success.
I was a Pac-10/12 fan for a long time; always defended it against critics who touted the Big Ten. We blew it. Mistake to add Utah & Colorado, mistake to do a championship game (when we don't have a the demographics and geography to make it a big event), mistake to let networks screw up our football kickoff times, mistake to not let Dish out of its Network deal (so we could increase Network's reach), mistake to hire Kliavkoff (who has never inspired confidence or given off an aura of leadership in any public appearance), mistake to not try to boot the "four corners" schools and return it to a true Pacific coast conference (which might have created a sliver of a chance of keeping USC)... there are probably more that I'm missing. I will give the Pac credit for moving the hoops tourney to Las Vegas, though...
Alright, let's hear a plausible scenario for how the Rams could have ended up where they are today had they been forced to stay in Anaheim.
On the Bruins, it's honestly amazing how out-of-touch the comments are here. At least Bill W. is making an emotional plea and John C. hasn't contradicted the basic fact that the move to the Big Ten is a huge boon for both the finances and profile of UCLA athletics.
Ben, spot on regarding the tentative future of the Pac-12. Why is the conference on life support? Because with no warning UCLA/USC abruptly left the conference. Left without giving notice to GK and in UCLA's case, to the regents.
USC/UCLA stayed silent while Carol Folt, instrumental in stopping the conference from expanding into the Central time zone and B1G Commissioner Kevin Warren lied to GK. The B1G, UCLA and USC agreed to an Alliance and swept it under the rug when it proved to be inconvenient to these 3 and FOX. (BTW: If Carol was playing footsie with the B1G at this point in time her voting against expansion without disclosure was a clear conflict of interest. Ditto UCLA if it was one of the 9 member school that voted against expansion.)
'The agreement wasn't in writing!,' you say. The Statute of Frauds does not require a writing for agreements of this nature to be enforceable. What happened to close to a century of collegiality? What happened to Kevin Warren's honor and his fiduciary duty as a trustee of the Rose Bowl Committee?
The 2 LA schools could have first negotiated for a bigger piece of conference media revenue before leaving for the B1G. And FOX had nothing to do with bringing the LA market to the B1G? If you believe this it is a naïve belief.
So, you escape like a thief in the night and then blame the party you abandoned for being on the cusp financially?
No, you can’t blame USC for the way they handled the departure. What were they supposed to do, announce publicly they were open to leaving? Would’ve had the same effect on TV negotiations (nobody would be willing to touch the Pac 12 until the USC situation was resolved).
And Warren didn’t lie to Kliavkoff. There’s no chance Kliavkoff even asked Warren if the Big Ten were interested in partnering with USC.
Yes--the Rams moved. UCLA and USC are staying in LA and traveling all over to get more money... while spending more money--much more money--to get that extra money. Thinking someone with a sharp pencil might figure out that the overall benefit is much lower than most might think.
I do not believe there is a St Louis Ram football team anymore.??? If St Louis was such a golden opportunity, why did the franchise bail/bale after 20 years?
Nothing but FACTS here, Mr Walton! 👊 the logistics of this move are just insane. It’s about football and money. The athletes in every sport will suffer. I believe in the next 5 years, geography will once again reign for west coast college sports.
"[T]hese same proponents of moving to the Big 10, are the first people I have ever encountered in my life, who have claimed economic hardship and limitations in Los Angeles, and that the solution lies in the Midwest..."
I will never, EVER, complain about Bill Walton while he’s doing color on a basketball broadcast again! To the contrary, he’s now my biggest hero and I can’t wait to watch him!!….Kudos to Bill for using his platform to publicly call out the UCLA money grubbers and give them the tongue lashing they so deserve…
You know you are on the right track when every, single, comment is in total support of Bill Walton. The UCLA Board of Regents, led by Gov Newsom needs to needs to get actively involved.
Great job, JC. Finally someone in sports media has recognized the elephant in the room, as summed up by Walton:
“I have spoken to no one, other than the highest-level directors of athletics at UCLA, who think that this proposed move to the Big 10 is a good idea….”
Living here in LA, as near as I can tell the support for this move comes mostly from UCLA sports administrators and above. Not one fan has told me they support it. Rather, the high-handed approach by administrators has turned off many alumni. Little surprise that attendance at UCLA football is down.
I’m 100-percent with Big Bill.
I think you're going to get a lot of support.

Thank you for being here. It means a lot.
Throw it down BIG MAN! throw it down!!
He did. He did.
Thanks for writing this, Bill. I whole-heartedly agree. It's a travesty, fueled by the horrific vices of unbridled capitalism.
Thanks Michelle. Appreciate that you're here for it.
YES!
...these same proponents of moving to the Big 10, are the first people I have ever encountered in my life, who have claimed economic hardship and limitations in Los Angeles, and that the solution lies in the Midwest.
He makes a point... the migration west was about opportunity...
It's like the big-wigs at UCLA never read "The Grapes of Wrath."
Tomorrow: interview with Tom Joad.
Well, the Rams did move to St. Louis, so it has happened before.
How'd that turn out?
They won two Super Bowls, are one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world, and play in the greatest athletic facility in the history of mankind. (None of which would've happened if they stayed in Anaheim.)
You are aware, that great athletic facility you speak of, is in Los Angeles... right?
I am also aware that the Rams, the Los Angeles Chargers and the LA area would never have gotten it had the team not left Anaheim for St. Louis.
St. Louis was a dumpster fire for the Rams... so if I'm understanding you, UCLA will move to the Big10, it will be a catastrophe, and then they can come back to the Pac12 and be heroes? That's the recipe for their success?

I cannot agree that none of that would have happened if they stayed in SoCal. And check it, they HAD to return to increase value.
I'm just saying the Bruins have a tough road ahead of them in the BIG.
Alright, let's hear a plausible scenario for how the Rams could have ended up where they are today had they been forced to stay in Anaheim.

UCLA baseball playing at Rutgers will give UCLA more exposure.
This move was authored by FOX as much as any person or entity and by UCLA's negligent management of the athletic department.
BTW, have you noticed how the over-hyped B1G college basketball teams have failed to show up in the Tournament?
GK will do a deal that will bring the Pac network to all cable stations.
Sorry Ben, but I believe you are the one who is out of touch.
A 12 PO is imminent. I believe UCLA has a better shot at making the expanded PO in the Pac-12 than in the B1G.
I respect and appreciate your comments.
No, Caruso initiated the move. We should elect him Mayor for that reason alone...
You don't want to talk about matchups. Even Bill Walton would agree UCLA's matchups in the Big Ten will be superior in just about every sport.
I don't care about college basketball. Big Ten teams lose in March Madness? Great.
I respect your comments also. We will see what happens with the Pac 12, but they are not out of the woods in terms of surviving as a conference.

Enjoy the B1G. Hope it meets all expectations.

I've been waiting to hear Walton's thoughts. I agree 100 percent with everything he has written.
I have been waiting too.
Nothing but FACTS here, Mr Walton! 👊 the logistics of this move are just insane. It’s about football and money. The athletes in every sport will suffer. I believe in the next 5 years, geography will once again reign for west coast college sports.
Well put. Thank you.
Well thought out and presented. Bill shows the value of his education and experience. Great job John!
He's fired up about it.
When is he NOT fired up about something? Lol. But seriously, he speaks the truth. As a Cal alum, I’m stunned at the Regents’ lack of….well you know.
Slam dunk.
We’ll said BW.
I hope his voice carry’s some weight with the regents and encourages others to speak out.
I don't know how they could ignore him. He's more than a typical alum.
"[T]hese same proponents of moving to the Big 10, are the first people I have ever encountered in my life, who have claimed economic hardship and limitations in Los Angeles, and that the solution lies in the Midwest..."
Sheer brilliance!
He's channeling John Steinbeck there.
100% agree.
He's spitting a lot of truth.
He's making a statement.
Who’s going to do the same with USC? Or do we not care if the door hits them on the way out?
You know you are on the right track when every, single, comment is in total support of Bill Walton. The UCLA Board of Regents, led by Gov Newsom needs to needs to get actively involved.
The audience is on board. Very telling.
Newsom has been vocal about this. The rest of the Regents? Crickets
Has Kareem chimed in yet? I love his perspective on many topics and I suspect he would share a lot of Bill's concerns.
Great job, JC. Finally someone in sports media has recognized the elephant in the room, as summed up by Walton:

Money money money...
Could not agree more..U of A alumni here.
Galvanizing... well put.
