John. We are glad your daughter had the sense to Pick the best University in Oregon to attend - Oregon State.

This will pay big dividends for her later as opposed to attending that school in Eugene where your degree gets you hired at Starbucks …. OSU Grads on their first hire, make more on average then any other Oregon University !!..

That’s on record !…. Congrats to her and to you for her choice ! Superb !

She must be very bright !

My daughter is a senior at WSU (I can't believe how fast it's gone by). Whenever I try to remind her about something she rolls her eyes with a "Dad, I've got it." Still hard not to check up on her, though. :-)

I wish JC had a way to write about UCLA fans' reaction to their team's planned jump. The LA Times loves the move and isn't bothering to test the temperature of UCLA alumni--even after the conference commissioner referred to the unhappy fan base. In my 35 years in and around LA, I've made many UCLA alumni friends. Not one I've spoken to likes this idea. Most detest it. UCLA made this decision in a vacuum, without consulting regents or alumni. Astonishing.

How else is UCLA going to erase their massive Athletic Dept. debt? If alumni really cared about that it seems to me they'd be applauding the opportunistic AD for his creativity, not clinging to stale tradition.

Canzano and Wilner already wrote about that. The move will end up being net-zero for UCLA with no financial benefit. They're just hanging onto big brother USC's coat tails and being dragged into an abyss. I do not think this will be a good move for either school when factoring in the impacts on all of their student athletes and coaches.

Well, I guess you do different math than I do. As to the "impact"...again, loads of speculative opinion without empirical data. When I heard the Commissioner use "climate concerns" that only confirmed my suspicions. The only sure thing is that change is threatening.

As an Alumni parent of La Sale I followed Dakota and others from a distance. Love seeing the growth of young people. Then you gave us a glimpse of her future and it sounds so promising. Kudos to your parenting and love you have for her AND for sharing her and your two darlings coming in from behind trying to fill her shoes.

You can research all you want about media rights, team expansion and the likes but sugar it all with your “heart” and you’ve got me every time. Thanks for investigating, reporting and sharing your views.

Interesting timing, as I heard Rick Neuheisel say Today on ESPN that Oregon and UW to the B10 is a done deal.

Really?

I think Rick is guessing

Just wait til SC and UCLA fans tire bith physically and financially to stadiums covered with snow, in Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and other Big 10 schools !

Gonna be a big shock when they find out that they are no longer Kings of the Hill ,

But just “another” Big 10 school facing mediocrity against “ M”, “O”, “ NW” and the others in the Big10. ….Stupidest move ever by So called “Higher Education” Professors !

I think you are going too deep on Warren's comments. It sounds to me more like he knows exactly where the parties he's interested in stand. Therefore nothing to chase after. Time will sort things out.

There is no reason to jump on anyone. He was awfully shrewd to get to USCUCLA before negations for the PAC and He will be seen as shrewd for standing pat for now. Also, there was the stories that some of the AD's didn't like all the extra expansion talk. I read nothing more into this that there will be nothing announced this year.

If the PAC deal comes in as far south as you have posted here, It would not surprise me for a couple more to bolt taking less $$. I'm actually thinking Cal and Stanford. 55-60 in BIG is still better than 35 in the PAC. (or at least if you use So. California math it is!)

With playoff expansion looming, I don't mind the idea of staying in the Pac-whatever for the foreseeable future. But still, feels like the Big Ten can get 3 teams in most seasons while the Pac only sends its conference champ. Pac teams will steadily continue to be devalued based on perception of weak conference, so a 10-3 or 11-2 runner up likely doesn't make it. Must win championship to get in most seasons, no exceptions. 6 auto bids, 6 at large. Feels inevitable the SEC and Big Ten will gobble up all those at large bids most seasons.

That for sure is the biggest issue with remaining in the Pac12/10

Zero margin for error. And that's right now WITH UCLA/USC still here.

It truly will be, from a national perception standpoint, just a small tick above the MWC once they leave.

And making it will be one thing. Winning it will be another. The UO-GA game showed how wide the talent and coaching gap is between one of the best in SEC and one of best in PAC. That will only widen in future with greater revenue and exposure gaps.

I really hope the P12 surprises with a digital partnership that is perhaps even “all in”.

I want something that wrestles some control back about scheduling, times, notice on game times and is truly forward looking.

The money potential is all different with a digital partner also, as many of those options have other ways to monetize beyond just ADs during games

Expand full comment

I cannot see any realistic way the conference could go all-in on a streaming partner, at least right now. Current deals should be shorter terms than previous, and I am all for sending the existing P12N content to Amazon or other. But it is vital to maintain traditional partners like ESPN for the bulk of games (at least for football). The national exposure is crucial, plus no bars are going to be flipping TV's over to Amazon Prime to show games. Whether or not you are someone who goes to bars or restaurants for watch parties or just to meet up with a friend to watch a game, that access and exposure by having the bulk of games still on major networks is important. And as much as some fans hate late kickoffs, this has been beaten to death by now, it is actually one of the conferences major selling points and provides a huge boost to viewership (AKA media revenue) by having almost sole possession of those time slots for ESPN, Fox, etc.

Bars are already doing that exact flip to show Thursday night football

If the money is right and the terms are good this would be a forward thinking move.

This conference is grappling with unbelievably and continually reducing interest because of the fans getting continually screwed.

I heard endless bitching about this in the seats in Tempe and I certainly know that’s how everybody in Seattle feels since I’m there all the time for games also

We can’t just keep hosing our fan bases or we won’t have them

I agree with you Buck. I wouldn't mind the late starts if they moved the game along but these games can last up to 4 hours! Back in the day college games might last 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

A streaming service could offer PAC 10 Saturday scheduling 4 games if you start the first game at 11:00 then 2:00; 5:00 and 8:00 with 1 game scheduled every Friday night.

I think the fan experience would be better if the games were shorter and I think more viewers would turn in to watch a game knowing it wouldn't cost them 4 hours of their time.

Absolutely Chip

They could also **ensure** we aren't playing UW at ASU, in Tempe, AZ, at 1pm in early October

We got saved for a while by some high thin overcast and a bit of heat dip from the norm, but when the sun came out in the 2nd half, the concourses were jammed with folks (including me) trying to stay in the shade and still see the game.

It's like -- what the hell are we doing here? This is ridiculous

Amigo, the reason football games are four hours on TV is due to advertising, which pays for TV-Time; sports broadcasting etc..., Also, TV time costs a bunch of money. Broadcasters need work on the Drug Addiction Fight model which is rather simple. It is not a fight and rather fun. Dr. Jim McHugh

You are wrong about the bars. Places of business will do whatever it takes to play they games they think will bring in patrons.

Remember, BlazerVision? I do. And so do many Portland bars.

Spot on

We are heading for more and more streaming and bars will be subbing to any/all of it as necessary. It's a drop in the bucket for them and they have to have the options covered to keep patrons coming and happy.

You have a lovely young lady there. My almost 40 year old has surpassed her old man in many ways. We do the best we can at the time, then it's up to them to finish what we started. Sounds like she'll do just fine.

John, Love the personal touches you give these columns. I'm a softie for stories of kids successes! It is refreshing to know that two whole generations don't just play videos in the basement! My daughter grew up to be a PR professional with a big outfit in Portland and a mom, (she was also a radio personality on the Bull for awhile) and my son a fireman! Both graduated from Oregon. Proud dad moment! As for the sports part of this...I hope the PAC 12? 10? 11? stays together. I also hope the Ducks hand it to UCLA next week. I love this stuff...guess it's time for me to buck up and pay you. You've earned it!

Congrats to your Daughter John. I am at the grandkids going of to College stage. Yes, I think your right that the Big 10 is done for awhile and the Pac 12 schools left are not a good fit. AS far as these far flung conferences are concerned ,if the conferences let its geographic outlier members put its Olympic sports in local leagues it would make much more sense.

Steve, the entire basis that supports TV/SPORTS is advertising. Think of it. A football game takes two and a half hours to play. It is given four hours to play on TV. That way, a regular football game has one and a half hours of advertising, generally focusing on beer, fast foods, deodorant, macho or business endeavors. John, I wrote a somewhat funny response to your statement. It was regarding how real football games takes two and half hours to play. Now a game takes four hours and only 15 seconds for AA or NA. Yeah, nothing like four hours of adds on TV keep me frisky. Dr. Jim McHugh
