I haven't always agreed with Peter Courtney and as I recall he hasn't always been in Sports Fan's corner on matters that might have helped lure the NFL or MLB. But he is to be congratulated on this effort.
The money that is being wagered in Oregon won't change at all as a result this bill's failure. It will just keep going offshore, like it always has. It's a lost opportunity for Oregon. Tribal Casinos? Your transparency, isn't.
We should tax the heck out of the Casino’s to pay for the kids. Just being punitive because it’s fun.
It would not have mattered much with the transfer portal. The transfer portal is really hurting the high school kids. Why would I want an 18 kid when I can go get a 22 year old that has made the adjustments? Unless they create more scholarships for HS only this is going to get worse, maybe that bill might have helped this.
I get the tribal casinos lobbying against this.. what they don't understand is we will go off shore with that money... People go to casinos for the experience and as a destination or mini vacation... We will still place wagers at those casinos but otherwise those bets to offshore if you live in Oregon ... So dumb
Thanks John for another good column. Once again though, somebody is accusing Chip Kelly for ditching the Ducks. What the heck was he supposed to do when the NCAA slapped him with an 18 month "show cause" sanction? Was he supposed to sit on his hands for 18 months? What were the Ducks supposed to do for 18 months? What else could they do but to move on. I wish everybody would stop criticizing Chip for leaving.
Can’t understand what there is to study. We wouldn’t be breaking new ground here. How many friends do we all have who already play college games online that wouldn’t switch over? Keep the $$ local and do some good.
Gonna miss that guy..

The portal is a game changer.
It really is but, it’s killing scholarships for high schoolers. Jackson St only have 5 HS scholarships this year. Need to balance it some.

I suspect the lobbyists would like to undo sports wagering altogether.

I didn’t mind Chip leaving to the NFL as much as some others. He’d sort of done what he came to Oregon to do.

It was a political maneuver. The bull could have helped some kids. Hoping some other lawmaker will pick up the baton.
We need more politicians with Peter Courtney’s passion & drive to make a difference.
He is a public servant. Also highly entertaining. Encourage everyone who wants to smile to listen to the podcast linked in the piece.
