Photo Gallery: Washington State beats Washington in Apple Cup

SEATTLE — Washington State held off Washington with a dramatic goal-line stand in the closing minutes on Saturday to win the Apple Cup.

Final score: Cougars 24, Huskies 19.

Quarterback John Mateer threw a touchdown pass and rushed for two more in helping WSU improve to 3-0. Washington fell to 2-1 after being thrown for a loss on fourth down and goal from the 1-yard line with 1:07 left.

Said Cougars’ coach Jake Dickert after the game: “Grit. Toughness. I love this team… we said we were going to win this game tonight not because we hate them, but because we love each other.”

The Cougars led 17-13 at halftime and held on to win.

QB John Mateer completed 17 of 34 passes for 245 yards and one TD.

WSU improved to 3-0 with the victory on Saturday.

Washington State was outgained 452-381 on Saturday.

John Mateer rushed for two TDs and passed for another.

The Apple Cup series has been played 116 times.

Thaddeus Dixon came up with an interception for UW.
