Photo Gallery: Washington State beats Washington in Apple Cup
The game... and emotion... in photos.
SEATTLE — Washington State held off Washington with a dramatic goal-line stand in the closing minutes on Saturday to win the Apple Cup.
Final score: Cougars 24, Huskies 19.
Quarterback John Mateer threw a touchdown pass and rushed for two more in helping WSU improve to 3-0. Washington fell to 2-1 after being thrown for a loss on fourth down and goal from the 1-yard line with 1:07 left.
Said Cougars’ coach Jake Dickert after the game: “Grit. Toughness. I love this team… we said we were going to win this game tonight not because we hate them, but because we love each other.”
I wrote a column about WSU’s upset victory in Seattle — and the emotional scene back in Pullman.
Photographer Rio Giancarlo was on the scene at Lumen Field. His gallery is worth your time:

Great game by Wazzu. Keep the momentum going. Go Cougs!
Love the Huskies. Reminded that it’s rebuilding era. First thing: discipline lacking with Huskies presently. WSU shown what that is about. Sad? Yes that we in Washington don’t have an equivalent to John Canzano.
