EUGENE — The University of Oregon opened the football season with a camping trip in the end zone.
The Ducks scored on all but one offensive possession and throttled Portland State 81-7 on Saturday at Autzen Stadium.
UO quarterback Bo Nix threw three touchdown passes and Bucky Irving rushed for 119 yards on four carries. The Vikings rushed for 148 yards and only trailed by a score of 8-7 in the first quarter, but were overmatched.
I wrote a column about the sobering reality of the 74-point drubbing. It revealed a truth about major college athletics. The game was simultaneously vital — and pointless. It was both a win and loss for both sides.
I had two photographers — Serena Morones and Tim Healy — at the game. Their photo gallery is a treat:

So everyone thinks they ran up the score….what do you want? This isn’t high school where you play with a running clock. Back ups were playing plus the 2nd & 3rd string QB. Give me a break you people complain & bitch about pretty much everything!
When Oregon State ends up in the same conference as Portland State this is how OSU v Oregon games would look. No thanks. Ducks, with all their PK money and purchased players, can find other teams to pummel.
