Some friends were negative after the first half. But, considering the unprecedented team overhaul that took place since December, I think the first half was understandable. And the 2nd half adjustments were noteworthy. Go Beavs!
Yeah, the "Jerry Pettibone Throwback Helmets" were enough to make us long-time Beaver fans twitch. Was waiting for the QB to do the Shanklin Shuffle (if you were there, you remember the little "step-step-step" they had the QBs do before starting the option/taking a sack).
I watched both the WSU and OSU broadcasts by CW. I am really pleased with the job they did (other than the molten lava color saturation on the OSU broadcast). I thought the on air talent was good (Ted Robinson and Thom Brennaman are veteran play by play guys and Ryan Leaf and Max Browne did creditable jobs as analysts. Also CW really gave both schools great positive exposure above and beyond the football aspect. I can't compare these CW broadcasts to the 1st B1G broadcasts of PNW teams because....uh..well..zzzz...crackle...looks like the line went dead.
If you've ever sat in those Eastside seats in late afternoon on a 97 degree day in late summer ( and I have) you know one big reason most of those seats were empty.
Great photos Kevin and Tim! The score could have been more lop sided, but Beavers accomplished what they needed to and didn't show much of their playbook. Pleased that Coach Bray didn't elect to run up the score. Did anyone else see shades of Storm Woods when our freshman from Texas got the ball late in the game?? Loved Jam and Hank! But the rook looked like he can run with the big guys as well!! I started thinking about Buffalo Bill Enyeart and the Giant Killers late in the game!!!
Throughout the 1st half I thought the ghost of Jerry Petitbone had taken over the comms between OC and the QB. My thought was that we could get away with one dimensionality against ISU but not better teams, and if our only departure from the run was the occasional short route, the better teams would just stuff the box on us and shut down any short passes as well. I was glad to see us take some vertical shots downfield to loosen things up. Gunderson did a nice job of rope a doping ISU into dropping their guard on the play action bomb to Wells.
The O-line looked solid on day one and the RB's 1 though 4 were talented and tough. Freshman Salahadin might end up being a special talent.
Other than the messed up punt that made this game closer than it would have been, special teams were solid.
Notable that there were very few penalties, especially the absence of false starts.
Both our QB's that played looked like vets and generally played smart football within the system. Nice to see the dual threat at that position for a change.
We soundly beat the opponent that was in front of us in the 1st outing with a new coaching staff and a horde of new players. Mission accomplished. Well done.
Thanks for the photos. The CW feed on YouTube TV was so pitiful we couldn’t read the names on the jerseys and the colors were so messed up the orange was red.
Considering it was HOT, and it was before school opens, there was a pretty good crowd. I could have said "and because it was Idaho State" which would have been the sentiment the past 25 years. But given what the Beavs have gone through there are no gimmee games and fans should relish every single win. Okay win. The first half the Beavs were not very good but looked better after halftime. Coach Bray had a lot to say, I will guess.
Imagine going to jewelry store and buying a $10,000 diamond ring. Then you take it to an appraiser who justifies it's worth only to learn later it was cubic zirconia. That's what this Oregon football team is. It looks great coming out of the tunnel only to learn its football dream dressed to be something it isn't. All that NIL money sure looked wasted on Saturday. Sure, they won. Barely. Lanning is a good guy. Great coach. We still are unsure. He's yet to get a significant win over a good opponent in three years. He talks about the most depth he's ever had? Really? Were you looking at tape of another team? Oregon, again, can't handle the spotlight when it's bright. If this team doesn't fix its mistakes against a decent Boise State team, forget about making the playoffs at this point we will be lucky with a winning season.
Eh, off topic. Wrong column for that. Please post it on the comments for the article JC wrote about the game the team that shall remain nameless played. if I has any interest in them at all I'd read that one, but I don't.
We were spoiled by last year's secondary, which was a bunch of 6th year seniors and the best since 2000. Other than Robinson and Thomas, this is a brand new secondary / defense. But Coach Bray built the solid defense of the last 5 years and so I trust he can do it again.
Solid game by the Beavers after a sluggish first half. Great photos!

Spot on comments Hermey!!
Nice W Beavs! Lose the white hats thou…

If you want to get rid of some hats at Reser Stadium, collect all of the orange cowboy hats. Those belong at Oklahoma State in Stillwater, OK.

Of course, with good TV coverage, your stadium is only half full. When you have no TV coverage, you get a standing room only crowd.

The orange was only orange if it was in the shade. Everything in the sun was RED.
But I’m so happy to have it on channels I can get without springing for an extra streaming app.
Great photos John, you have a talented staff. I don’t think we’re going to miss Damien all that much, impressive performance from his replacements.

If you can’t fill your stadium, other conferences or teams will not be interested in aligning with OSU & WSU.
Strange how Cal, Stanford, and UCLA got into other conferences! I think it has more to do with markets and brands than percent capacity of a stadium
Not my problem. That is something the OSU admin has to address. I hope for the best but whatever happens, happens
Great to see their grit and pull together for the win
Great pics. Some incredible shots, details and sequences. Details that otherwise never get seen in the blur of the action.

How 'bout those Beavs.
I see some further developments needed in the secondary, but overall it wasn't bad.

Biggest improvement usually comes between games 1 and 2. The newer DB's will learn.
Next week against SDSU should be another good learning opportunity.
Hopefully this was a good experience for ISU and they don't end up at the bottom of the Big Sky (again).
Love the photography
Know Any way to find a rebroadcast? Recorded Oregon, ucla, - only had room for thosex2 games, but would love to watch the Beavers game.
You can watch the whole game on the CW app now
