Good. Oregon is the only P4 team in the nation in 2024 to play 8 games in a row against P4 competition without an Off Week.

Game 6 of this gauntlet is at Michigan. Game 7 against a Maryland team that without its starting all-time B1G passing leader quarterback, Taulia Tags, humbled an Auburn team that took Bama to the wire. No. 8? Turn around and head East again, this time to play Wisconsin. 11/16 in Madison? Pack the Long Johns.

A CFB players union would not allow this type of scheduling and where in the hell was Rob Mullens? Mullens was a participant in B1G AD meetings before the 2024 schedule was released. Rob, good officers look out for their troops.

Yes, Ohio State trips to Autzen but the Buckeyes schedule in 2024 is a piece of cake compared to Oregon's schedule. USC comes close with 7 games in a row vs. P4 teams.

I'm sorry for Hawaii and Coach Chang but the Ducks do not need the extra mileage in 2024.

The Ducks have no one to blame but themselves for the extra mileage ....

That sounds like a fan still trying to secure a P5 conference. 🤔

JF wasn’t the one whining Todd. He simply commented to the long diatribe from Jon. I love Maryland call, they are bad, feels like already making excuses. Wiscy just got swept by WSU so that’s funny as well. Welcome to college football future run by TV execs, it’s only going to consolidate more and the Maryland’s of world won’t be on schedule except hoops.

Expand full comment

Exactly. I’m with you, Ken. I don’t understand all the bellyaching really. TV is running college athletics now. Either we need to get on board with us or we need to walk away. I frankly choose to embrace the new conference, and the New World order of college athletics. These athletic directors should do the same.

Expand full comment

Easy for you to embrace.

You're not the kid getting up at 4 on Thursday morning, going to the Eugene airport for a 6 a.m. flight somewhere, then sitting in another airport for two hours waiting for a connecting flight to Newark, Baltimore, Omaha, Indianapolis or someplace, then taking an hour-long busride to Lincoln or New Brunswick or West Lafayette or Champaign-Urbanna and arriving at 8 at night.

And then repeating the trip, in reverse order, three or four day slater.

I’ve had my share of long bus rides on my high school squad. A kid does this because they want to. If they don’t want to travel, they can play at Linfield. I don’t how this is an argument. I was never lucky enough to play on a college team. So you’re right I’ll never know what it’s like to go through this. But you’re right I’m just some armchair hack with a phone in his hand.

Most of the teams at a place like Oregon are not flying commercial today and it’s even less likely they will in the future. They charter planes and fly direct. For example, the Lincoln airport is a 5 minute drive to the Nebraska campus.

Like moths to the flame.... not a pretty ending.

The Big Ten basketball schedule is about to be released. 7 home games, 7 road games, and 3 home-and-home games (likely the 4 West Coast schools vs each other). If those 7 road games are 2 games per weekend, that would mean between 3 and 4 road trips for UO/UW to the Midwest/East. Football will be 4 road trips. Not exactly an insurmountable burden for team travel.

What does going to Hawaii August 24, then playing Idaho, Boise State, Bye, and Oregon State have to do with playing 8 consecutive quality opponents later? You think the flight to-and-from Honolulu will be so taxing that it will affect the meat of your schedule that starts 5 weeks later? I don't get your point.

Expand full comment

That’s gonna be a grind. I honestly might peek at the box score or I might not. It feels like a flat tire I just don’t wanna put air in for some reason.

Expand full comment

Regardless of the fact that Hawaii would take a licking, it’s a destination game for us fans. It’s disappointing. I’ve been over to the islands plenty of times, just not for college football. I guess an “ice box” Big House locale of Michigan will have to do. LOL

And much better if the Ducks beat UM at their place. 😃

Better make this a part of your 10-year plan

That’s a long way for a Big Ten team to travel.

I hope Hawaii gets the funding they need. The state deserves a great football program to ,watch it’s long legacy.

The, “be careful what you ask for” reality is starting to leak into the PAC 12 assassins minds like a drunk on the morning after wondering what they did. The woes of the football teams facing these ridiculous travel requirements pale in comparison to what the non revenue sports face. No charters for the baseball, softball, volleyball, or other women’s sports! What a travesty. I feel for the kids affected by this that aren’t on the universities “professional” sports teams.

Expand full comment

Haha. They’re young kids. They can handle an extra two hours on a plane. Not to mention playing better schools.

Expand full comment

Bad response. Non revenue sports travel more, most of them are pure students unlike football 5x a year travel.

Big, big difference. Also takes away time from their campus experience which is why they are there in the first place.

Just a horrible response John.

I agree baseball / softball has always spent more time away from their campus due to usually playing three game series but the fact that they get to play better competition is huge. Competitive cheer has always travelled all over the place. Same with golf. Try being on a bus as a D2 or D3 student athlete while travelling 500-700 miles. I’ll take a five hour

Plane ride over that anytime.

Expand full comment

Are you saying Big 10 baseball and softball represent better competition than Pac-12 baseball and softball? That's hilarious!!

Expand full comment

Along with a 12-hour layover/delays at O'hare, Seattle, SLC, ATL, EWK....not well thought out friend.

Expand full comment

Could be worse, you could be Portland taking two week bus rides through the Canadian prairie in January! Hockey is harder!

Expand full comment

Like I said, I’d still take a flight over a bus.

B1G softball is nowhere close to "better competition" than the Pac. Nebraska will be a two season fluke due to the transfer in of Jordy Bahl from Oklahoma, but other than Michigan in some years, there isn't much there for softball.

Expand full comment

Not all sports in the BIG are better but the important ones are. That’s what counts.

Expand full comment

You’re all over the map. What sports are important? You’re bringing up golf, baseball and women’s softball.

Big10 has never won a natty in women’s softball.

B10 has won two golf men’s championships since 1946.

B10 has won men’s baseball natty last in 1966.

B10 has won one natty in men’s hoops since 1990.

Since 1971 they have won 4 natty’s in football. Top to bottom their football is not very good. Wiscy is probably their 4th biggest brand and they just got swept two years by WSU. UW absolutely boatraced Mich St on the road this year.

I think you are making a lot of assumptions on quality of B10. That and it seems like you are moving goalposts.

Having traveled extensively during my business career, I can tell that you've not done so. There are no direct flights from Eugene to West Lafayette, Madison, College Park, State College, Omaha Iowa City, etc. Connections and layovers are often changed or cancelled due to the weather during the time of year these kids will be travelling. For a 3-game baseball weekend the teams will need to fly on Thursday, and return on a red-eye on Sun night. and most likely on Monday. That is a best-case scenario. Throw in weather delays, missed connections etc. and it could easily extend the travel from Thursday until Tuesday of the following week. Bottom line is that this was not very well thought out. All in the quest for more $$$$. The kids other than the highly paid "group of 4" pros" do not deserve to be subjected to this sort of torcher.

Expand full comment

These teams fly on charters, all flights are direct.

I myself have done a lot of travel before I retired. There are work arounds. Again these are entitled kids that have unique talents. If they don’t like the changes, move on. It’s good to have choices.

Hawaii is now in a 15,000 seat stadium. Going to 25,000 doesn't seem like enough of an upgrade to justify the effort and the cost. If the plan was to build a 40K or 50K palace, all of the additional planning and organizing would make more sense.

Oregon doesn’t need to play Hawaii, Portland State or eastern Washington again.
