Love me some track and field...

And my old joke...

The Mile is the real event, all the others are so fans have something to watch before and after the 4minutes of excitement

(I was a miler of course)

No race compares to the Mile. 4 laps at near full speed. You are already tired by 880 yds (800m) and starting to wonder if you have enough for two more laps. It is grueling. I actually enjoyed the 400m that the sprinters hated because it was over so much faster. LOL!

I considered the Mile fast chess.... anything shorter you're just sprinting, anything longer is lots of planning.

But the Mile is so close to sprinting, one wrong move could throw your whole race off and the key was to set the other guy to make a mistake two or three moves ahead.

I miss it.

Thank you, John (baseball guy), for recognizing one of the most significant sporting events annually in Oregon. The state punches way above its weight in track and field: Hayward/Bowerman/Knight and numerous world-class home-grown talents. I go back to watching Mel Renfro and Jerry Tarr going 1-2 in the high hurdles and Dyrol Burleson winning mile for UOs first NCAA championship in 1962 plus many Olympic trials. Hope you will report on USA Track and Field Championship 7/31 - 8/3 and the continuing excellence that highlights Oregon culture.

I ran in the first 3 Pre Meets. Still remember the day he died and that first meet like it was yesterday. Another fun little trivia thing is that Mondo’s dad and mom were on the LSU while I coached there, dad was a 19ft vaulter from Louisiana and mom was a heptathlete from Sweden.

Love the pictures, love track & field. I taught Yared in high school in Louisville, great kid, real talent and also plays violin.

A former Portland Beavers player, Eddie Basinsky, was a violinist in the Portland Symphony during the off season. That was a while ago.

Thanks John and Tim for the Track coverage, and the Bowerman Mile was a race and finish worthy of the Pre name and Eugene.

I am a big T&F fan. I did not have a chance to watch the Pre meet this year. It is great that Faith is so close to the Sub-4 minute mile mark, about 5.5 secs away (3:43 is the metric equivalent). It was not that long ago that Francie Larrieu was a world-record competitor and she was running in the 4:20s for the mile and had a 4:09 as her best 1500m mark. That is SO much improvement over 50 years by competitors like Faith

I see Oregon's Raevyn Rogers is still competing very well with a 1:58.49 in the 800m

Great shots at one of the best days of sort I’ve experienced.

I confess I often gloss over event photos when I've seen the game itself. I really really enjoyed these photos and in particular the photographers comments on each one.

The "Pre" was, indeed, a classic and these great shots are indicative of the many wonderful moments we enjoyed. Eugene is surely the track and field capitol of America.

Many thanks, John, for providing this excellent work.
