I'm trilled that you refer the Oregon-Oregon state game as the Civil War...I for one grew up with that name and I still refuse to call it anything else ..The new Ballpark in Hillsboro might be the beginning of something really big in the future...just say'in
I got called out for using the Civil War moniker in a story I wrote, even though I had put it in quotes. Was asked if anyone was mad about the term being used, and I pointed out a player in the post game interviews used the term himself. The outrage over the term makes no sense if one actually knows history. 🤦♂️
The PAC 12 baseball tourney in Hillsboro would be epic ! That seems way more plausible than MLB coming to PDX. I love going to Hops games, and as a Mariner’s fan - looking forward to Aquasox coming to town in mid June to see top prospect Harry Ford. This guy is headed for Majors having also represented Great Britain in the recent Baseball World Classic. Play ball !
At 3:30 pm today the Colorado Board of Regents has an executive session. Section 24-6-402 (3) where they will be getting “legal advice on a specific matter - athletics matter at CU Boulder”. Do you expect any realignment information to come out of this or any information? This is the same section agenda notification that was on the previous agenda when they left the B12 to come to the PAC 12.
In examining prior minutes... these topics regularly came up long before expansion and realignment. Keep in mind, the driver of conference expansion isn't hype... it's obvious media markets and the value they add (NYC, Washington DC, LA, etc.) Denver is a nice market. But it's not that.
This is SO OLD understanding, John! It's not media market anymore, it's viewership and rivalries and national tv hours. Southern California has one of the largest media markets and they couldn't get an NFL team for a decade because Californians care less about sports. It doesn't matter how many millions of people you have if they don't want your product. Same goes with New York. Syracuse is not a draw. The ACC followed your failed viewpoint when they added them and it's been a flop financially. Unfortunately for Pac12 fans, your commissioners and presidents have followed the same failed logic.
Besides USC, name the biggest college sports name in the cities you listed? UCLA can't even fill their football games. Georgetown? Syracuse? The biggest names in college sports are in small markets. Alabama, Clemson, LSU, Oregon, Oklahoma.... This media market talk is so overplayed. Sad you drunk the Kool-Aid.
Paul - You have a point that it is not all just about the size of the media market but more about potential eyeballs. So some teams are overvalued like Syracuse and others undervalued like Alabama, but the media is good at adjusting for things like a brand name. Alabama and Oregon are examples of extra value due to brand. Colorado, however, is not a national brand and would not provide any additional value beyond their media market size.
I disagree. I think Colorado has been undervalued because of their recent record in football. They have a brand that goes back to when they were in the Big8 with McCarthey. I think Deion Sanders revives that program fairly quickly and national audiences would want to watch them play.
I thought I read somewhere that Denver would be the third largest media market if Colorado rejoined the Big8/12? Behind Houston (Houston) and Dallas (TCU) though Dallas ain't exactly in TCU's pocket.
No commentary here on the NCAA Div 1 regional baseball tournament? The Beavers did very well to get to a showdown with LSU on Monday with their very limited pitching staff and weather delays. It was painful to watch those middle relievers with the 5.0+ ERAs try to get through a powerful LSU lineup. They could not get it done. But they did manage to beat Sam Houston State two games, patching things together with some surprising innings from a couple of higher ERA pitchers. That should help next year. The hitters were clutch as they always are. Again, this is the best hitting Beavs team in modern memory and it was wasted for lack of pitching. I did not watch the Ducks games but they cruised through the playoffs as you would expect for a team which has had less injuries. The center of gravity for Pac12 baseball is now two wet weather programs only 40 miles apart
Nice back handed jab at Ducks...."less injuries". Cruised through the playoffs?? You did not watch you said......Ducks are far from a great team but I would have been all for both Beavs and Ducks moving on to the SR. Ducks had to beat a strong SEC #5 Vandy to get to the SR. Beavs a young team with great expectations. All this from a guy who was complaining in February when the Ducks were higher ranked than the Beavers in a meaningless pre season baseball poll. Just a few positive thoughts and accolades would be great from you.........
Didn't watch the Ducks (since I was watching the Beavers) but read the game reports. Yep, it would have been great to have them both in the CWS. Maybe it will happen in the near future. Coach Canham has to improve his pitcher recruiting. He really hasn't found any gems since he started as coach, but the hitting is better since then. Coach Casey always found a few pitching gems, like Matt Boyd (current MLB), Luke Heimlich (MiLB), Drew Rasmussen (current MLB), Kevin Abel (MiLB) and Jake Mulholland (Independent League) to go with hitters like Adley Rutschman (a future HoFer if he stays healthy)
you just can't get over yourself...First of all Fella, Oregon is using 11...count em, 11 freshmen pitchers...Oregon lost 2 starters and 1 reliever to injuries, all of their upperclassmen and top arms...yet they are where they are and OSU isn't. It's called coaching AND RECRUITING. they go hand in hand. You might be better received here if you watered down your hatred for Oregon and tried to show just a little less bias. Your posts remind me of the USc troll.
"Fella"?! LOL...what are you 99 years old? It is YOU who can't get over yourself. I said nothing about the Ducks ages. Obviously, they have good pitching (btw...Kevin Abel was a freshman when he carried the Beavs to a CWS Championship; youth actually can help). That was my entire point. The Beavs need better pitching. Congrats!
Abel was mis-used by Casey and killed his career. And that's all you've got, criticism of my use of fella? I'd have used something a little more disparaging, but I figured my point of your hatred and bias against oregon in every post was enough.
Thank God the Beavers did not draw Vanderbilt! I couldn't stand to watch those games with the Vandy Whistler there. But clearly the Ducks got the easier draw. But the bigger issue is why no regionals on the West Coast? Only 1? and 8 (eight) SEC teams as hosts? And why no Arizona State in the tournament? I am pretty disgusted also that the Beavers were forced to play 3 games in 24 hours, potential starting a 4th with that 2nd game going past midnight. Horrible! That is very tough on the arms and risk of injury is increased. I don't think the NCAA has the best interests of the athletes health in mind. Pretty disgusted with the whole thing at this point.
The Heisman Trophy recognizes outstanding performance which best exhibits the pursuit of excellence with integrity. Last year's winner did NOT meet all the pre-requisites in my opinion. Painting f.ck utah on his fingernails was so disrespectful. A mistake? He did that all year long and I haven't seen any apologies for his poor judgment. Did you not think about this when you cast your ballot? How could you overlook that?
Just because, "It's OK, other people do it" has never and is not now a legitimate reason for putting my morals on a shelf.
Helping to normalize if not legitimize this country and its despotic, murderous, misogynistic-doesn't-even-come-close to describing their treatment of women, and yes, terrorist-supporting regime is anathema to everything I believe in. Perhaps even more so because it is prostitution for money.
Perhaps you can overlook Prince Mohammed Bin Salman's order and/or cover-up of murdering and dismembering journalist Jimal Khashoggi while he was legally residing and working in our country (albeit the murder and dismemberment occurred on Saudi soil via their Embassy), I cannot. That begs the question of Saudi Arabia financing, supporting and sending terrorists to murder thousands in the World Trade Centers. I am disgusted by this move by the PGA.
I am a golfer and love to watch the sport played by the very best in the world. However, all I can do now is divorce myself from supporting the PGA in any way, including watching it on television.
Luckily, this abhorrent decision by the money grabbers in the PGA coincides with the debut of Rose Zhang on the LPGA. Hopefully, her prowess will bring more eyes and more money to that tour. At least that, and the Euro Tour, is where I will watch golf exclusively now.
You fail to mention everything else the Saudi's have there fingers (and money ) in , Stop watching the PGA, now because they are hopping in bed with LIV, , Soudi Arabia competes against USA and everyone in the Olympics. I'm not backing them, just informing you that all international sports are included, Not just Golf
Where will PSU play their future football games at if not at Hillsboro stadium? I thought I read somewhere that the use of the the stadium will not be extended? What shocks me to the core is the PPS and PSU couldn’t do a deal at Lincoln High to get get a bigger stadium with seating done?! PSU I’m worried is going to be a vagabond and homeless for football in the future. Thoughts?
I was a national sales manager earlier in my career and traveled by air almost every week from the middle of the country (Minneapolis and Chicago) to either coast. It is very stressful and tiring. These kids are going to hate air travel by the end of their college career. It was never great 20 or 30 years ago, but is a lot worse now. I can't imagine flying coast to coast every other week. I need to do it every month or two now, and I hate it. So will they. It might be a recruiting disadvantage for USC and UCLA. If I were a recruiter against them, I would use that with the HS kids
I feel sorry for the kids, but USC & UCLA made their beds and now have to deal with the bedbugs. I think the cross-country travel will result in 1 or 2 losses in "close" games each year. Jet Lag is a real thing. In a win/lose tipping-pont play, I can see a tired kicker missing a kick; a lineman missing a block; a qb missing an open man; a DB turning wrong & getting blown by for a TD. The net result can be a close loss vs a close victory. That might be enough to miss out on a conference championship or CFP berth.
After a couple of years of these sorts of outcomes, remaining Pac-X coaches will use this effectively in recruiting against USC & UCLA.
An excellent and very overlooked point...it's going to hurt USC and UCLA in the non-revenue sports...dramatically. Not going to help with football, either.
Highly unlikely given that already there is a fair amount of aircraft chartering taking place for non-revenue teams. I just saw a pic yesterday of UW’s track team getting on one to fly to NCAA’s.
I was talking about specifically private jet travel. If they could even cover it, whats the point of breaking even? The move really makes no sense outside of football.
yeah but UW besides Oregon, Stanford, and USC are 4 of the wealthiest athletic departments in the country...The UW's TYEE club can easily fund that kind of travel.
Plot twist: NIL and transfer portal stay unchecked and college football’s new superleague emerges, made up of the richest 24 teams buying virtually all 4-5 star players. They create 4 divisions of 6 teams each and name themselves the Five Star League of Champions, each college reaping hundreds of millions in media rights.
Unchecked NIL may be the best hope in future for an outside program with a fat pocket booster to buy a roster to compete for NC. Otherwise, I think regained institutional control over player pay will lead to a model like you mentioned.
Here's a plot twist I'd like to see: A new big purse golf tournement named for Jamal Khashoogi. MBS deliverers an oversised cheque of blood money to the champion.
It would be cool if the Hillsboro stadium upgrade could also be expandable in case MLB to PDX ever happens. Having an upgradable stadium might give MLBtoPDX an advantage over the other suitors.
I would think there’s a massive difference between 6,000 and 30-40,000 person facilities, would love to hear someone with some expertise weigh in on that.
I'm trilled that you refer the Oregon-Oregon state game as the Civil War...I for one grew up with that name and I still refuse to call it anything else ..The new Ballpark in Hillsboro might be the beginning of something really big in the future...just say'in

Agreed...its a damn "game " name
NEVER stop calling all Oregon vs OSU games (no matter what sport) The Civil War.
Ok, here's a wild one: The Pac12 and ACC engage in a scheduling partnership to bolster media values.
Nah, never happen. It would be like a PGA and LIV agreement. And, that will never happen?
The PAC 12 baseball tourney in Hillsboro would be epic ! That seems way more plausible than MLB coming to PDX. John - 2 dingers in one column! "Calimony", love it! PGA and LIV; once again, followed the money! Play on, John, we need you out here. Charlie
PGA joining with LIV and the Saudis makes me want to puke.
Why? They own a team in the Premier league, involved in F1 racinf=g, in Boxing. Olympics on and on
Golfers golf take money from anyone. Tiger? Rory? they have as much money anyway
Just because, "It's OK, other people do it" has never and is not now a legitimate reason for putting my morals on a shelf.

thats no answer, will you now, stop watching all golf? Did you watch the Olympics?
With UCLA gone I would like to suggest Walton look for broadcast opportunities with the Big 10.
Well played, TC. Charlie
Yes, PLEASE!

PSU football belongs in Providence park
Amen. But they won’t let it happen... the soccer teams.
I know I'm old but I remember baseball, PSU football, some high school games and soccer.
But did you ever watch a baseball game on Vaughn St? That would dictate how old you are!
Got me there

Highly unlikely given that already there is a fair amount of aircraft chartering taking place for non-revenue teams. I just saw a pic yesterday of UW’s track team getting on one to fly to NCAA’s.
They mostly use charters for special travel like NCAA tourneys, otherwise you'd see pictures of them doing it as a recruiting tool.
They'd go seriously broke traveling charter across the country every other week for every sport.
The extra $40-50 million per year they’ll each be receiving from the B1G will easily cover the additional travel expenses.
I was talking about specifically private jet travel. If they could even cover it, whats the point of breaking even? The move really makes no sense outside of football.

Hilarious!
