Was fan apathy part of the Pac-12's downfall?

Years ago, when the Pac-12 Conference was immersed in a staring contest that involved DirecTV and the Pac-12 Network, I had a high-ranking official in the SEC tell me that the standoff would never have happened in the South.

“SEC fans would have gone into DirecTV with Molotov cocktails,” he said.

I’ve frequently thought about that over the years. It underscores the unhinged football mentality of the South and punctuates the bias that remains tilted against the Pacific Time Zone.

Are those things connected?
