I think Bill Walton and Mike Leach would approve the pirate ship you've built here, I know I do. You've created more than that, it's community, almost a BFT family that gathers around the dinner table to talk sports, among other things. Here's to another 20 years of your experiment working.

Congrats, John.

You have Big League Smarts, and you write with a Big League Heart. You took a big risk and are reaping the rewards. You have earned your success. Your subscribers are happy for you. Day-in day-out you follow the Jackie Robinson mantra:

“A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.” You make a difference. We readers are grateful.

John - I miss Bill Walton and Mike Leach. They were icons of years past. The college sports world is a mess right now. But you try (and succeed) to bring some daylight for your true sports fans. Thanks for that. You are truly following Walton's advice. If he were in Vegas with you right now, I'm sure he'd say, "power to the people - carry on brother"!

I worked for The Reguster-Guard for 42 years. Was blessed to know some of the best sports writers and editors in newspapers back in the day. I’m 79. I started reading the Oregonian sports pages every day when I was 10. Congratulations John. You’re the best ever. I’m a UO fan, but read every word of your PAC-12 coverage. I greatly appreciate the combination of family, human interest, and sports reporting. I hope to see you in some venue one of these days so I can thank you personally, and ask for a selfie.

John...you took the road less travelled and let us ride along with you. You cover the big stories but also the personal stories of both sports figures and non-sports figures with honesty, integrity and compassion. You make me feel like I'm standing in the corner of the room eavesdropping on your conversations with AD's, college presidents and star athletes. Where else am I going to get all of that? You're the Walter Cronkite of sports writing in a world filled with too many sports blowhards looking for clicks and cash. Congrats on four great years and count me as one of your happy subscribers.

REALLY enjoy your columns, John. Stop whatever I'm doing to read them when they hit my inbox, although being retired that isn't hard lol. Trying to learn not to react viscerally when commentators trash my Beavs to no avail. Sigh.

we're good, Don! GO BEAVS!

John,

Being a Pac-8/10/12 alum (BA at Stanford and MBA at Oregon) and living in Boise for the past 46 years (and big Boise State fan), I so appreciate you and what you have built. Your passion for sports, family, people and the Pac-12 has led to amazing, insightful and heartfelt stories. I get lots of emails each day and yours is one I always read the moment it appears in my inbox. Thank you for taking the risk and being relentless - seems like both your readers and you have benefited greatly!

Well, Beavers fans, Damon Stoudamire just became available to coach after being fired by Georgia Tech this morning.

One of the footnotes in Canzano's career was his agreement to urine test Damon for marijuana use. He did. And Damon passed the test on that particular occasion. The NBA Players Union was not happy about it.

Hey John- I’m so glad you took that big step! Your essays are so appreciated and your content is polite, retrospective, and heart felt. Couldn’t have made a wiser choice. Regards and Bravo!

I'm sorry I wasn't one of the first. But glad for every issue since. I'm most impressed with your ability to be enthusiastic about every person or institution you write about without being a honk, i.e., your lack of bias, while truth telling at the same time, is impressive.

FWIW, I, too, wrote my own obituary some years ago. I've edited it numerous times since. Haven't needed it yet.

We look forward to your column knowing it will be an honest "report", and an opinion that has been researched and is fact based. Thank you.
