When I told my 15 year boy about it..and he’s a die hard Blazer fan..the look on his face was pure shock..It’s puts in perspective how fragile life is..I work in the Mental Health field..It’s hard everyday seeing people struggle when we all already fight our own internal battles…one day this country will take MH more seriously..I hope and Pray that day comes soon…
This story breaks my heart. Caleb needed a mentor and fell through the cracks with lack of mental health help. The pressure on athletes to exceed & excel can be too much for young men (and women) with a poor background and even some with more stable support. Teams MUST take better care of these precious and talented souls. Thanks John for the real story🙏
Sad story, when these young guys go pro the first thing they should do is hire a handler. Someone that will continually point them in the right direction and help get rid of the expensive entourages and family leaches that drain money from them constantly. They need to learn how to handle large sums of money and invest in their future.
Agents have their place but most are just in it for the money only.
So sad. I remember when he was playing his rookie year, I thought he might turn into our version of Draymond Green. Prayers to his family and those affected by his tragic passing. Great article John 👏.
Another one of those sad sports stories. Many of our young athletes are valued for what they can bring to a program…MONEY! Then when some of the guys in the organization look the other way or focus on more promising ones we lose another one. Attention given to Mental health in ANY walks of life should be in place for times like these. So sad…he could of had it all and seemed to be on his way.
Extremely sad story. Thank you John for writing it, nobody else would. Research and storytelling like this makes you special and I’m glad to be a subscriber.
"The medical examiner determined Swanigan died of “natural causes.” But there’s nothing natural about the life of a 25-year old former NBA player ending so tragically. "
First thing I said-there's NOTHING NATURAL in passing at 25yrs old, period.

Sad stuff, for sure.
So sad. Thanks for digging up the story behind this, John.
Thanks Mark.

Wish he could have been helped.

John, thank you for your reporting on Caleb, though I was sorry to learn the details. A lost soul passing through the system.
thank you. I am grateful that I have the platform to do this kind of work. Appreciate you being here for it.
Thank you for writing this. What a heartbreaking story.
Yeah. Ugh.
An important story to be told, but so tragic & sad. There’s too much emphasis on money in our society & not enough caring for each other..
For sure Chris. For sure.

Really sad stuff.
A very sad story this morning. May Caleb Swanigan rest in peace.

Simply Tragic...there is no other way to present it........damn
Amen. Yes.

So sad! Too many former Blazers have died before their time.
Drazen (this news really killed me inside).
Kevin (they gave up on him too).
Fernando Martin
Jerome
Uncle Cliffy
Of course Paul Allen and Maurice Lucas did what ever that was possible to fight their cancers.
