CORVALLIS — It was a bad look. No way around it. Oregon State’s Maalik Murphy lost his cool on the sideline at Reser Stadium early in the fourth quarter on Saturday night.

His debut in an Oregon State uniform was unraveling like a ball of yarn.

Murphy clapped his hands and shouted in the direction of offensive assistant Danny Langsdorf.

Across the way on Cal’s sideline, true freshman quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele had his arms folded and was smiling like a guy who reached into the pocket of an old pair of jeans and found a long-lost $100 bill.

Cal beat Oregon State, 34-15, on Saturday. There was no greater indicator of the opening night groove than the moods of the respective starting quarterbacks. Murphy looked like a grump. The transfer QB from Duke completed 21 of 33 passes for 244 yards.
