And Caleb Williams was the backup at Oklahoma….until he wasn’t.
Watched Chiles here in socal during HS. Very talented. Have a feeling once again this season the best team in the state of Oregon will be in Corvallis.
The SC d backfield is filled with 4 and 5 stars I don’t think anyone is worried about a singular HS player months from signing day but we all know how hot and bothered 18 yr old recruits from California get grown men in Oregon lol
Did you even read the article? If so, comprehension ain’t your thing. He’s already in Corvallis, is a Freshman, not months away from signing period. Also, your defense is always filled with 4-5 star guys. What was your excuse last year, because your defense sucked. Pretty sure I wouldn’t be spouting off about my defense if I was SC.
There is significant harm in what FOX, B1G10, UW, & UO knowingly did to financially scorch the remaining PAC schools. This is likely lawsuit material, and IMO, the PAC4 probably can’t walk away quietly from this, whether they want to or not….. If a large fleet of super-cruiser ships purposely swamp a group of smaller tourist boats in the ocean with no attempt to offer a life rafts, they will be subject to pay damages. The B1G, FOX, UW & UO May either have to pay-up or prepare to spend time & major fine$ in court or find the time to bring their earnest goodwill to the arbitration table.
“FOX came in and didn’t want AppleTV to move into their college sports space, so they intentionally sabotaged the alliance and offered more to the B1G 10 negotiators” to give UO & UW a full half share each worth about $33M / year each guaranteed, and growing in the future.” UO & UW quickly obliged while knowing full well that the consequences would immediately jeopardize the survival of the PAC, even after the viable offer came in from AppleTV which would have ensured the PAC’s future survival .
In this situation, AppleTV media group would likely be on the PAC-4’s side; since they had reached an tentative agreement in principal with the PAC-9 to keep the conference together on Thursday night. Apple dedicated a huge amount of time, $ and new technology for On-Demand replay, highlight and multi-view options for the PAC’s benefit within their good faith offer, … which FOX then sabotaged at the 11th hour knowing full-well that taking UW & UO out of the picture would be blow up the PAC conference. That AppleTV offer was built around a media rights package that would pay each member school no less than $25 million per year, with subscription escalators to improve the total take to $32 million each and very likely more/year.
I hate to make casual reference to nuclear buttons ;…. but FOX, the B1G10, UO, and UW knowingly pushed one in purposely blowing up the PAC Conference. Anti-Trust violations & Triple Damages could now be in play as a potential last recourse, or otherwise they will need to arbitrate. It’s time for the PAC-4 Presidents to continue consulting with legal counsel to evaluate their actions, for which out-of-court arbitration may bring the offending parties to the negotiating table with their best goodwill in mind for “perhaps” an better outcome for the remaining PAC-4. Time will tell what kind of collective fortitude that Jayathi Murthy. Kirk Schulz, Dr. Michael V. Drake and Marc Tessier-Lavigne have in what’s now referred to as “survival mode”.
(… Tessier-Lavigne is already packing his bags; ...so forget about him.)
I truly hope that the remaining four venture down the liability road... It probably wouldn't get to court and would be a settlement... Also hope the Oregon legislature looks into how one state school knowingly put a financial burden on another.
I'm certainly not an attorney, but I do know that it is illegal for someone in a position of influence to entice someone (or entity) that is a party to a contract to violate that contract. Media contracts aren't the only ones that are relevant here. There are various express contracts between the Pac schools. But there are also implied ones that carry some amount of legal weight. Lawyers are going to be busy here. Especially at Fox -- as if its corp of legal eagles doesn't already have enough to do.
I'm no lawyer, Daddy - and though a Duck alum and fan, did not want this to happen. With that said: Common sense tells me Oregon and Washington's defense will begin with the absence of linear television presented in the Apple proposal, which you refer to as a 'tentative agreement'. Is that what it was? And if so, given it's tentative nature, can it be deemed binding? Like I said, I am not a lawyer. I also wonder if the court would penalize either school for acting in their fiduciary best interest. I'm sure the schools would argue 'it was never our intent to harm the Pac12, but given the options at hand, we made the smartest choice possible'.
Disagree. Considering $25 million +subscription bonuses are not that much different than the $32 million under payment from the Big10 to excuse the knowledge of financially destroying a fellow state college. Add that all presidents are saying the exact same story that all presidents agreed to sign the Apple deal that Friday, and UO only contacted AZ 15 minutes prior to the meeting, blindsiding all of them.
I get the anger at UO and UW, as they were the last nail, but USC and UCLA started this mess along with Fox and Big10. If they had stayed we wouldn't be talking about any of this.
Kiwi, I understand where you’re coming from. My comments were not directed at you or any other Duck fans, but more at the “powers at be” that intentionally pushed the button to end the PAC-9; which knowingly caused significant harm to those schools. Certain of those actions certainly violated anti-trust laws.
As a side-note, but not fully germaine to the legal issues, the resulting monetary outcomes for UO & UW were about the same and probably less than what Apple subscriber rates were. (Not sure that the Ducks or Dawgs actually come out ahead of the Apple Options; especially in consideration to the major stress to Duck & Dawg athletes with significant added travel and time zone adjustments, but that’s a side issue). __ Regardless, these types of predatory actions which violate anti-trust laws often or usually benefit the collective perpetrators (in other words. “in their best financial interests”), but those facts do not make them legal.
Anyway, these comments are not directed at Duck or Husky fans.
Exactly as I’ve pointed out less the potential legal response. FOX essentially “hired” the Dux and Mutts for a hit on the PAC to protect its interests in the time slots in the pacific time zone. Apple presented a threat to that, and Fox knew that once Apple got a foothold with the hi tech streaming option that was presented to the 9 PAC teams, they orchestrated the midnight defection and hit. Dux and Mutts jumped at the money with no consideration for the legality of the stunt they colluded in.
I can see your POV Jim. But can you also see or accept the POV that AppleTV could have just come out with a very compelling $ offer and not let the door open as they did?
What I heard was Apple low balled @ $23M. Then it increased to $25M. Why did it increase? Could it have gone even higher? Why the heck did Apple start so $ low?
I understand, but we have had more honest and forthright dialogue about this which should have occurred
With all 9. The clandestine and unethical actions by the two misfits eliminated the ability to continue negotiating. Getting blindsided by two of the nine you assume are acting in good faith blew this off the rails. Panic set in, and the train wreck
Ensued. The Apple offer was also an opportunity for the PAC to achieve far in excess of the $25mm per team per annum base (as reported by JC).
Gotta love America... don't like how things worked out... sue the SOBs. What a stretch that the remaining schools (PAC4) would have a ghost of a chance suing networks that did what they are supposed to do - put together great programming to build their brand and make a profit. Lost in all this vilification of the networks is the very real fact that for decades the conferences and schools have been pushing hard for bigger guarantees and long term agreements. Many, not just you, forget that the networks didn't just arrive giving wheelbarrows filled with cash, all the schools and conferences negotiated hard for more, more, more. Now they are paying the piper. It sure will be interesting to see the next chapter unfold. I'm rooting for the Beavers to be the great underdog winners this season. How cool would that be?
In any arbitration it appeared there was no tradition (linear) TV package presented from GK. Just AppleTV streaming. OU & UW can legally point to that as ‘significant harm potential’ to their respective brands, given these brands have been built up under traditional TV, and recruiting could suffer as a consequence of not being seen by eyeballs that can’t afford or otherwise don’t have/want AppleTV. The $ payout under the stream deal was also less than Big12 with a $ ‘reach’ to meet or exceed this like conference payouts if certain # of subscriptions reached. If USC & UCLA are getting pass I don’t see how UW & UO wouldn’t get the same. I hope the entire CA, OR, WA teams come back together sometime in next 10 years, after streaming for NCAA sports w/ B1G or SEC takes hold
UCLA is not getting a pass, since they are the hook to significantly compensate CAL.
btw, there was a linear poposal for simulcasts & liner highlights each week, which was in addition to free OnDemand replays for all subscribers and free to all purchasers or all new Apple iPhones, iPads, Mac-Pros, etc. The argument that no college sports fans have access to WiFi, or cable App options , or cell phone services seems like a bit of a stretch; but either way, does NOT nullify Anti-Trust violations.
Not casting shade here on Duck or Dawg fans, .. just the actions of those decision-makers.
Love his parents, especially his Mother. “OSU is our squad” I feel very confident young Mr Chiles will stay with Coach Smith wherever they land. He is a winner any place they land and he will prove that to everyone.
Stay with Coach Smith young man, and you will be a star, and have a great future.
I would love to meet his parents.
Coach Smith and staff, take care of these people, they are like GOKD TO US!!!
Nailed it Joe. I think Aiden will stay and I think if enough Beavers stay over this chaotic transition to - (who knows what) the team will be stronger than ever.
With another good season I think the Beavers might have more leverage . Risky, but could be worth it. What do you think? FYI, I'm a Ducks fan, but I hate to see Beavs get screwed.
“If Chiles is ready and is the best player, how do you not play him?” Been saying this for months. If Chiles is your best QB you play him and you play him now. If you don't, you run the risk of never playing him at all. That's the current landscape in college football.
I believe if Cal and Stanford can be convinced to stay the pack can take a couple years and build back to a great conference. Also if the Pac sticks together the Beavs have a better chance to make it to the playoffs than the Ducks.
Thanks for this article. No lawyering, no if/thens, no what if the cow jumped over the moon, just a warm and inviting human interest story, relevant to sports, about a sporting life BUT also a journey of an student who is, apparently, a pretty darn good athlete. Can't help but root for the kid and the team that recruited him. The 'BIG BOYZ' always find a way to scrub out the talent, without regard to the conference they are in. Maybe OSU could play in the Patriot League. Most of their athletes go "PRO" in something other than the +/- 1% probability of Professional sports
It doesn't matter where you go to school if you have the talent. Roethlisberger went to Miami of Ohio, Flacco went to Delaware, Josh Allen went to Wyoming, Mahomes went to Texas Tech, Jimmy G to Eastern Illinois and I could go on for days. The NFL will find you...
Listen Maverick, I don't know about you, but if I'm a QB with some talent, I'm going to a program where I can play. Not some place where I have to compete against 4-5 other blue chippers and could be left holding a clip board for multiple seasons. That goes double if the place has a QB whisperer for HC like Jonathan Smith.
Easy to see why Beaver fans are so excited about this season. We know what we have with Ben. DJ is the wildcard. Chiles has the launch codes. Coach Smith smiles.
Thanks, John, for helping your readers get to learn a little bit about Aidan Chiles and his parents.
I have been a Beaver Believer since this 12 year old got to walk up the old north side ramp along with Dave Schilling after a good win over Utah, circa 1976. I can still hear Ted Carlson on the PA “Dave Schilling with the carry”
Since then, I’ve watched 50 Civil War Games, either in person, on TV or on radio. (I listened to the entire “toilet bowl” game on the radio as buckets of rain fell outside. I hope to be able to watch this young man whenever he is called upon to play. But I fear the worst as the current events grind on to who knows what sort of outcome.
I was at the Toilet Bowl. My 9 year old daughter wanted to attend a game and tailgate with Uncle Steve. Rode to Autzen in the open bed of Steve's pickup truck.
It rained, it snowed, it sleeted and the wind blew. Daughter was in her 30s before she would go to another game.
That was the last tie college football game. For the next season they changed the rules to allow overtimes. I believe Oregon played in the first overtime game that year (USC?).
What is not being said here is that we have allowed two conglomerates, under the guise of “football conferences” to control college football. Is there any doubt that Fox and Disney are controlling this debacle? Sure CBS gets a few games, but imagine if all we had were United and American Airlines to travel on and they kept around Spirit just to act like there is competition. What if we only had two oil companies, or two grocery store chains or just two of anything. Congress and Justice would leap in with anti-trust work, so why not now. I suggested as much to Senator Padilla in a note which I’m sure will be ignored, but that is really the heart of the matter. Two monster media companies putting sports operations out of business with a semi-pro league….it doesn’t pass the smell test if you take off the “conference re-alignment” cover.
Cal playing on the east coast? I rather we gave up football. OSU and WSU will have every key player and probably Jonathan Smith gone next year and talent will get stolen or head elsewhere. Both Cal and OSU got screwed on stadiums.
I'm so angry at this I cannot see straight and yet there is not a damn thing any fan of Cal, Stanford, OSU or WSU can do about it. I just hope when UW, OR and UCLA show up at Memorial that all hell breaks loose from the fans and students. You can thank Rupert Murdoch and Disney for this....
I doubt Smith leaves next year... Will he last a lifetime like was certain before is left to be seen, but Smith stays with us at least five years, maybe even longer
I'd like to believe that as I like the guy and he has worked miracles. My crystal ball says he wins 9-10 games in the conference before it implodes. Maybe even contends. Where does OSU go...the MWC where they can play Hawaii, SDSU, Fresno State, etc. A fun league, but after 2023 those teams have no path to anything but a 3rd tier bowl and in fact the bowls may go away too.
So...I imagine Smith will be a hot commodity and after he sees the players bail for the Power 4 teams he will take an offer somewhere and he would be nuts not to. Wilcox will be gone too I imagine...are we going to recruit a kid from LA and tell him he get to play on the east coast against Duke? It all sucks!
The 4 leftovers are screwed no matter what happens and I hope you are right, but I seriously doubt it.
Thank you John for a much needed grounding as to why we still like college football, in spite of it’s present state
GO DAWGS
Don’t forget, John, Marcus Mariota redshirted.
Excellent point.
And Caleb Williams was the backup at Oklahoma….until he wasn’t.
Watched Chiles here in socal during HS. Very talented. Have a feeling once again this season the best team in the state of Oregon will be in Corvallis.
yeah well your aunt was your uncle until she wasn't. I have a feeling Oregon will be the best team in southern california...again.
When OSU plays USC it will be interesting to watch the matchup of Chiles and Dakoda Fields. Oh, wait.
Thanks John for another good piece- I’m excited to see this young man continue to grow. He’s got a great foundation and strong character.
I’m excited to see what the Beavs do on the field. Go Beavs!!
The SC d backfield is filled with 4 and 5 stars I don’t think anyone is worried about a singular HS player months from signing day but we all know how hot and bothered 18 yr old recruits from California get grown men in Oregon lol

Jeff, SC was replying to comment about Dakoda Fields, not Chile's. Ironic...
SC always sports a lot of 4 and 5 star guys who manage to underperform on a regular basis.
You're really going to talk trash about the Trojans' defense? Really?
Tulane.
Love this, JC. Keeping it real. If the Beavers and Cougars wind up on the Island of Misfit Toys, I will remain rooting for them.

Yep. Kiwi gets it.
Robbing a bank would also be in the best fiduciary interests of the robber. However it’s illegal and damages the victim.
I get the anger at UO and UW, as they were the last nail, but USC and UCLA started this mess along with Fox and Big10. If they had stayed we wouldn't be talking about any of this.

Thank you for a refreshing column about a rising star athlete and student.
I am tired reading of the dysfunctional PAC 12/10/9/7/4.
Aiden Chiles reminds me why I love college athletics.
Amen.
His parents sound smarter than most of the (former) Pac-12 presidents. Definitely more loyal.
My exact thought, EA!
“If Chiles is ready and is the best player, how do you not play him?” Been saying this for months. If Chiles is your best QB you play him and you play him now. If you don't, you run the risk of never playing him at all. That's the current landscape in college football.
As with everything that happens in life, all you have to do is whatever the next right thing is.
The Beavers will be just fine when all is said and done.
How will the beaver be just fine?
You' right. What was I thinking!!
Big Sky shouldn't even take them!
Hope Chiles sticks around for next year.
I believe if Cal and Stanford can be convinced to stay the pack can take a couple years and build back to a great conference. Also if the Pac sticks together the Beavs have a better chance to make it to the playoffs than the Ducks.
Articles like this one remind me why I have been happy to have subscribed.

Yup. Brett Farve The University of Southern Mississippi . They find you.
Oh yeah, I forgot about him. Here's a list of a lot of good to great NFL QBs that went to small schools: https://www.yardbarker.com/nfl/articles/the_best_small_school_quarterbacks_in_nfl_history/s1__37439732#slide_18.
If I am coach, I show this list to Chiles and say... "Go get 'em" 😎
Absolutely...if Chiles shows to be the best QB in camp, he needs to start, period.
Easy to see why Beaver fans are so excited about this season. We know what we have with Ben. DJ is the wildcard. Chiles has the launch codes. Coach Smith smiles.

You have nailed the crux of my POV on this crime. A pox on Fox and Disney/ESPN.
I doubt Smith leaves next year... Will he last a lifetime like was certain before is left to be seen, but Smith stays with us at least five years, maybe even longer
Agree. Why shouldn't he... be the guy who says WTF... I'm in, let's go?
