Canzano: Trail Blazers on the block -- is Phil Knight a buyer?
Is the Nike founder ready for a legacy play?
The Trail Blazers didn’t get Cooper Flagg.
Maybe they’ll get Phil Knight instead.
Portland’s NBA franchise announced on Tuesday that it’s for sale. Finally — at long last Paul Allen’s dying wishes will be honored. Forgive me, but I had to check to make sure it wasn’t a social media prank or April Fool’s Day joke.
It’s true.
The Blazers will go free.
My mind went directly to Knight, 87. He and Dodgers co-owner Alan Smolinisky offered $2 billion for Portland’s NBA team in 2022. The Celtics just sold for $6.1 billion. Knight’s offer was a legacy play, perhaps designed to be a starting point for discussions. Or maybe he was just kicking the tires.
Is he ready to make another run?
