I’m not going to bag on Tom Dundon. He might just be onto something here. So I’m not going to call out the hiring of his new ‘Rent-to-Own’ head coach. I think there’s a much deeper and more interesting takeaway on what’s going down in Portland.

The Trail Blazers’ new coach will probably tell the world he’s betting on himself. That he’s lucky to have one of only 30 NBA jobs. That agreeing to one-year contract that makes him a lame duck on his way in the door is pressure he enjoys.

It’s what I’d do, given the circumstances.

But there’s much more at play here.
