Fans of the University of Texas at San Antonio sometimes like to claim that Texas State is like their little brother.

The rival schools play each other in a college football game on Saturday with big political and regional ramifications. I bounced this whole ‘younger sibling’ thing off Kelly Damphousse, the president of Texas State, this week.

Damphousse told me: “We have to beat them.”

Texas State has been around a lot longer than UTSA. It has a former president, Lyndon B. Johnson, as a graduate. George Straight, too. But as you know, perception rules. Football is everything in Texas, and Saturday’s outcome will provide significant framework for this debate.
