All I can think about when I read the same replies from the university officials is this mathematical equation:

“Meeting was fine. I think we are pretty solid."

+ “Waiting to early next week. League needs to deliver something soon and good.

+ Excellent communication between ADs.

+ Seems we are strongly committed to wait and see the deals.”

=

"Both teams played hard."

My thought was, this is pretty much the same thing they have been saying for months, fiddling the same tune while Rome burns.

"And you have our thoughts and prayers." When I first read the statement that came out I assumed that it was from the Commissioner doing very bad damage control. When I realized that it was the product of the remaining 9 CEOs after their "emergency" meeting I could only think "Oh, no!"

Thank you Bruce Barnham and the PSU athletes for your contribution to the camp. My daughter is special needs and although she did not attend Mr Canzano’s camp she went to a similar one in Sweethome. Not only was it a fantastic experience for her the interaction to socialize like regular was the best. Being a quirky kid can be very socially isolating and the love shown by the kids that were volunteer helpers was amazing. I love hearing the stories about your camp as it reminds me to keep life in perspective. What’s really important is how we treat each other. Thanks JC and please continue your advocacy for those who actually need it the most.

I don't mean to sound like an ingrate, because I do appreciate the update - particularly coming from a source in the room. I particularly appreciate the exact quotes from your source. However, I'm not thrilled with phrases like "I think we're pretty solid"...and, "Seems like we're committed to wait and see the deals".

Pretty solid? Seems like we're committed...? Not exactly convincing. I'll bet the source's description of the "room" was much stronger 24 hours before Colorado jumped ship.

It's really pretty simple now. Yormark knows if he can get Arizona it's over for the Pac-12. ASU's president said two days ago he "prefers" to stay in the Pac-12, but he does not want to be separated from Arizona. Arizona is the Achilles Heel today for the Pac-12. Yormark knows it. I don't have a clue what Kliavkoff knows. Yormark also has another target - San Diego State. If the Big 12 can lure San Diego State they can deal a mortal blow to the Pac-12 in household viewership in southern California combined with a huge dent in the Pac-12's SoCal recruiting. Yormark is playing chess; Kliavkoff is playing Tic-Tac-Toe.

Your source is absolutely correct about one thing: "League needs to deliver something soon and good." That's the understatement of the week.

John. I truly appreciate how you have been reporting on the PAC 12 big picture issues. The PAC 12 has always had a perception of being “the wine and cheese conference”. I thought in recent years we were beginning to shed that perception. But after all that has happened and to see the lack of action, that perception is back in the forefront.

Since Oklahoma and Texas left the Big 12 has added five schools, they have their TV deal signed and finished. What has the PAC 12 done since the departure of USC snd UCLA? Lost another school and nothing else

The Loss of Colorado is seismic and not because of the quality of the program but because it happened and no one seems to have known about it snd because the PAC 12 was saying we are all together, we are all unified. If one more school leaves it is then everyone for themselves and the end of the PAC 12. Where the heck is Kliavkoff? If I had a business that had multiple locations with multiple leaders. I would be meeting with them in person at least weekly or every other week. Letting them know what is going on. Making sure they were solid snd that there was communication. Zoom calls don’t do that. Heck the Big 12 could have been sitting in someone’s office while they were having their Zoom call. Good grief. What is happening or not? Keep up the good work. Keep the spotlight on high beam.

I have been wondering, John, if the discomfort the Colorado quarterback showed may have had something to do with him knowing that his school was leaving the PAC 10?

If you replaced Colorado with Colorado State, would anyone notice? I don’t blame Colorado, they flipped their program to cash in on their coach while they can (he’ll be gone in two years). Why take the risk of a lower media rights payout?

Expand full comment

No. Both Colorado and CSU are largely irrelevant in Colorado in the fall. It's a Broncos state, 1000%. They suck all the air out of the college football balloon.

CSU is a nothingburger. Add SDSU and stop there.

Expand full comment

Absolutely correct. I lived in Denver for 10 years and it is a great pro sports town (Broncos, Avalanche, Nuggets, Rockies).

Colorado State has the Cheyenne, Wyoming market.

1990 was a good year for CU football. I think them leaving is a good thing. Load up on CSU, then go get SMU and Rice. Tell them each they are getting 75% of the cut, reward the other programs that stayed with the leftovers. The chancellors of each university get what they want - schools that fit the other schools profiles. Large land-grant state U’s or private schools that either have money (SMU ~USC) or the academic chops (Rice~Stanford). If SDSU fit their vision this would have been done. They don’t so people need to move on from that. SMU/Rice becomes the PAC-12 Texas outpost, you keep some footprint in Colorado. None of these schools is a threat to UofO’s or UW’s aspirations.

Cheyenne is a University of Wyoming town. The Cowboys have owned the Rams of late.

CU had rabid fans when they had a decent team. They just haven't since joining the Pac12 and even a few years before. I think with Deion, they get much more interest this year.

EA you are always spot on!! I say let's give up the concerns about academics and go get SDSU, Boise State, Freno State, SMU and Rice. It gives us the Dallas and Houston TV markets along with the last state in the PNW along with Central CA which is bigger than WA and OR. You have to know that Fresno State will get real serious, real fast. There is some serious money in the San Juaquin Valley.

Camp Exceptional is the stuff that matters. Thank you John, and PSU.

First, how is it that the Big 12 can add unlimited small market teams and still guarantee $31.7 million per school for 15 or 16 schools?

Second, do you think GK truly did not know that Colorado was bolting at Media Days? If so, does that make him not up to swimming in the deep end of the pool? Or did he know and didn’t want to be honest (say it ain’t so, Joe).

Since we have a 9 game conference schedule in 2024, kind of imperative to make an offer to SMU this month, right?

Here’s hoping for a $32 million plus deal, SMU in 2024, and SDSU, UNLV, Rice, Boise or whoever in 2025.

Great job, John

"The network {Fox] doesn’t “own it all” but it has a foothold in the Pacific time zone. It isn’t motivated to help the Pac-12 get a good deal. In fact, you could argue that Fox benefits from the destabilization of the Pac-12 (see: USC, UCLA, Colorado)." That is an astute observation. Perhaps Mr. Kliavkoff should open his eyes and observe the same. 'Pirates playing chess' was accurate and funny. Thanks and VR,

Mailbag: "The league needs to deliver something soon." 1. What is "something?" 2. What is "soon?" This league hasn't delivered a thing since USC and UCLA announced that they were ditching the West Coast to be able to play in Columbus and Ann Arbor and provide entertainment for people in Chicago. 3. Fox long ago started to ignore the West Coast as irrelevant, and now that greater LA has agreed, how will the West Coast make itself relevant, other than trying to award the highest coaching salaries in the country, win, lose or draw?

Very happy Lanning got an extension, and I feel confident he will stay in Eugene through it. His kids and wife love Eugene ; Bo Nix and wife have babysat for the Lannings. The players like their coach and vice versa. He is young and he will punt on fourth down this year with his new Aussie punter, He is a defensive coach, and has got a stud who transfered from south carolina (?) and plays on the defensive line. He got a guy whose brother now plays for the Beavers. He is a freshman defensive player; You pronounce his name, I tried. Dabo Sweeney wanted this freshman very badly. Dabo will be in or close to the final four this season and I like his attitude and his school (Clemson) As for the pac-9, they are doomed unless either Fox or ESPN shows pity and they will have to play on Thursday and Friday nights. Ducks, Utah, and Huskies might be smart and leave this jv league before it sinks into the ocean. Adding San Diego State or SMU makes A poor league even more watered down. The current pac-9 commisch and his predessor ruined the league. It will still be five years for the pac-9 to catch the big boys like Georgia, Alabama, and Ohio State., if they are lucky. Have waited for a year only for pac-12 to announce tv deal. Now, I do not care much because at 30 million or so per year, per school, is peanuts companed to SEC, BIG 10, and ACC. Alabama and all the big boys take in around 70 million dollars per year. Get out your calculator and see that the powerhouses back east all average 70 mil or more and the pac-9 or 12 or pac whatever get 30 million. Fourty million per year difference, and UCLA and USC were smart to only get 70 total in the BIG !0, when they leave in summer 2024. Think Chip Kelley, or Lincoln Riley can use the extra dollars to recruit? Caleb Williams of USC, who won the Heisman last year, and is back this year, just got 10 million dollars american to appear in a movie Love Phil Knight , and his wife Penny, and all they done for so many. Only wear Nike air pegasus; they are comfortable as slippers. My current ones are DUCK Specials model 39 circa 2022. They are bright green and I replaced the green laces with bright lemon ones from an older pair of pegasus . Lime green and lemon yellow are original Duck colors, and I wish the current uniforms would go back to these two colors. Read Shoe Dog by Phil Knight, written in first person. Is still a a best seller after some 8 or more years. I could not put it down, and in the 1970 when Phil was running for the Ducks , is where book starts. I lived in Eugene then, and remember watching Mr. Knight run for the Ducks. OHSU and their hospital just saved me from a total lung blockeage, followed by a major heart attack. The Knights have benefitted OHSU for years, ever heard of the Casey Eye Institute? Lucky I live only 10 minutes away from there and do not remmeber ambulance ride, or first five days there. I am very excited about the upcoming college season, and I pick either my Ducks or USC to win the pac-12. No final four again this year. Am a Duck for only 60 years, and this Duck team has great potential. Bo could be number one NFL pick next spring. Defense will be improved. I can already taste the sweet revenge when I go to Seattle in October, ditto fot the Beavers at Autzen in Nov. 2023. GO DUCKS AND DUMP TRUMP 2024.
