Rotisserie chicken. Homestyle sides. Cornbread. It was home cooking every day at that place, and the chain’s 1,200 locations were a thriving business.
Mistakes were made.
Meatloaf, turkey, ham, and deli sandwiches were added to the menu. Private equity kicked the door off the hinges. The chain chased revenue and expanded too rapidly. Franchises popped up everywhere. The Boston Market crisis compounded when grocery stores and Costco began selling $4.99 rotisserie chickens.
Boston Market currently has six locations.
The U.S. Senate passed the Protect College Sports Act this week. The way the legislation got done — late at night with some amendments — gave it a “Pac-12 After Dark” feel. It’s onto the House of Representatives now. And I’m left wondering if the legislation will be enough to keep college sports from becoming another cautionary Boston Market tale.
Some thoughts:
