Scott Rueck is a true OSU Beaver in that he is an authentic underdog, and thrives in that role. If Beers plays up to her capabilities and sheds the mask, OSU will go far.
He's also an Oregonian through and through. Small wonder the two greatest Beaver coaches in the last 20 years were both born in Oregon, went to high school and college in our state, both coached at George Fox in Newburgh Oregon for at least 6 years, and got hired at OSU to rebuild their programs and take them to the national level. If Scott ever wins a National Championship for the Beavs he will be at the same level as HOF baseball coach Pat Casey.
Great recollection of Rueck’s early years. He’s established himself as an OSU legend since then. His WBB basketball program might be, no, ….. IS the most enjoyable and fan friendly, affordable program at OSU. Go Beaver ladies!!
Excellent piece! Burgerville? Juxtaposition of offering a major college coaching opportunity in a small town drive-in to flying candidates in private jets to high end locations, just to interview, wow! Ever thought of screenwriting? I would pay to see the movie. I marvel at your continued ability to find interesting, often inspiring, stories within the larger narratives of sports.
Thank you, John...that was a great story to read about how Coach Rueck was hired. Really???? At a Burgerville???? Too funny.
I took my daughter to the USC game this year, as her birthday request. It was a great game and she was so excited to see the women play that we're going to make this an annual trip to Corvallis.
Now that we have Raegan back, the team's chances to advance look really strong. GO BEAVS!!!!!
John, that would be perfect, since we're coming up on the 14th anniversary of his hiring! Take him back where it all began. You could do a post season interview there and get his reflections from then to now.
I went to college in Monmouth. It was a dry town at the time. My wife and I went on our first date at that Burgerville in February of 1988. 36 years later, here we are. Thanks for making my (and her) day.
What an amazing article on Coach Rueck. What a fantastic hire for OSU! Tough situation when Beers got hurt. I was at the game. Probably cost the Beav’s the Portland regional. Coach Rueck has a rested team, with Beers back. This will be an amazing NCAA tournament, lots of good teams. I believe coach Rueck will lead this young, so talented team to the Sweet 16 and possibly Elite 8. Those stars that coach say will be shining bright in the future for him and this team!
Thank you for providing the back story on Coach Rueck. I did not know it. I have to admit he is who raised my awareness of the OSU Women's BB team. Amazing success in such a short time against very established national programs.
I am so glad I started watching Rueck and the Lady Beavs playing this year... Never watched women's basketball before, and they converted me... I am far more intrigued by women's basketball than men's... Go Beavs
Love the story on Scott Rueck's hire at oregon state. He seems like a genuine and humble human. I had an interview at a fast food chain once. Difference is I didn't get that job🙃

One of the great success stories.

I asked Rueck what he ordered... and he said: "I remember not having an appetite. That was surreal stuff."

Yes. I think I need to bring Rueck back there and buy him a milkshake.

Burgerville!!
Love their Oregon Strawberry shakes when in season!
Need one of those.
That place... is legend.
As a 1973 alum, it makes my day to read a story like this. Have supported the Beavs thru all the ups and downs and and always will. GO BEAVS! 🧡🌟🖤
Such a fun story to write.

He's very very good at his job. His initial salary: $140,000.
Loved this article following the great interview yesterday. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Mary Lou... you did well.

Sometimes the job you DONT get is good...
Amen to that, still happy for that miss!
This hyped me up. Heading to Corvallis for my first ever NCAA tourney games on Friday. Can’t wait!
I think this team could surprise.
Rueck was a find! Imagine Scott Campbell and him together. Two of nation’s best. Congratulations to both on great season.
Both also happen to have lots of class!
Love the Rueck/Auriemma story!
I never knew what they said until this week.
