Canzano: San Diego State and SMU play waiting game
Aztecs AD said of Pac-12: "It's certainly a question our coaches are getting."
John David Wicker is the athletic director at San Diego State University. On Thursday, Wicker was with the Aztecs men’s basketball team at the NCAA Tournament.
They’re in Louisville.
Also, they’re in limbo.
San Diego State has had frequent contact with the Pac-12 Conference in recent months. It has good academics, sits in the Pacific Time Zone and would add 1.13 million Southern California television households to the conference. The university feels like a no-brainer addition if the Pac-12 presidents and chancellors decide to expand beyond the remaining 10 schools.
Recruits want to know — is San Diego State going to the Pac-12?
“It’s certainly a question our coaches are getting,” Wicker told me.
Meanwhile, in Dallas, I’ve talked with a variety of coaches from Southern Methodist University over the last several months. They’re eager to learn if the Pac-12 will invite the Mustangs to join, especially after commissioner George Kliavkoff’s well-publicized visit in February.
