I was thinking the same too since I attended that game. I recall Woody Hayes leading the Buckeyes onto the field much like Dee Andros did. As a 11 year old boy I wondered who would win the foot race between Dee and Woody?

In 1967 Ohio State started the season 0-1 with a loss to Arizona, then went to Eugene and beat the Ducks 30-0. OSU finished the season 6-3.

Oregon started the season 0-3, lost at home to Ohio St, and finished the season 2-8.

Oregon State went 7-2-1, tying UCLA 16-16 because of a missed extra point. I remember this clearly because I was 9 years old that season.

Yeps, regarding PSU. It is a unique animal. And deserves more financial support for it athletics programs. There has to be a few almost Phil Knights out there who feel the same way. Has to be.

Sticking my chin out here, but I have long wondered why PSU even bothers. They are a fine urban educational institution, I understand, but athletics seem to be mostly a source of frustration and money spent that isn't there. Just sayin', Charlie

I am going to be even blunter. PSU was a basic community college. It still is. Many departments are merely placeholders for old politicians in this state to blather away at some poor student who aspires to a worthless degree in government and politics. Having lived in Portland for three decades and watched all the crazy moves -- such as trying to use urban renewal dollars for campus improvements; poor articulation with PCC for what transfer credits will be allowed and still screwing over many transfer program students-- it needs to be dissolved and sell off the property for a better use.

Well played, tc, and I love your candor. I did not feel qualified to comment beyond the public knowledge that drove my opinion. I went, among others, to a municipal university, which later became a state entity (Wichita State), which was a "real university" with a real structure and campus support by the local business community (business, liberal arts and aeronautical engineering, etc). So from that point of view the lack of traction at PSU has always been an enigma for me. Thanks for your assessment, meaningful. Charlie

I went to PSU… graduated. Never attended a single sports event while there yet I think of my self as a sports fan. Went to OSU one term and I followed them intently. I can’t understand why the continue to bare the expense of fielding a football team. No one really cares. Football is expensive. I thought maybe concentrate on putting out a great basketball team. Other commuter colleges at times have done well in basketball

Agree, Jim. Wichita State did field a football team, they were in the Missouri Valley league with Oklahoma A&M (now state), Tulsa, etc. The tragedy of an airplane crash wiped out the football program in the seventies, so they let it go. Wichita State has had national success over the years in baseball and basketball. The Koch Brothers built them a 12,000 seat basketball arena which was always full (Ralph Miller of Oregon State fame was the coach).

Wichita University (State) was always a big deal in the city (not much else going on), and there was a civic affection for the Shockers and the University much like you might detect in Corvallis or Eugene. Kansas State (which I also attended) and the University of Kansas were pretty remote in those days, and more closely associated with Kansas City (The University of Missouri is on the other side of the state). I have, in 60 years of living here, known one person who was a "PSU fan," a guy I used to pay golf with. My wife's nephew played golf at PSU on a scholarship for a year to two about 20 years ago and we looked after him while he was here, but even then there didn't seem to be much connection. I have never understood this, but in my experience this is the case. What, as an alum, do you feel toward the school and community? Charlie

John cmon, have you forgotten the unspoken costs of NOT hiring a search firm....

A president, chancellor, etc., with higher aspirations in higher education is at the mercy of a handful of search firms. They build the relationships and goodwill needed by using openings on their current campus. Search firms want to see that you understand how the machine works, and that they can trust you to keep the business flowing if they do place you at one of their clients higher in the pecking order.

Questions for Cach Dickert: As the staff hits the summer camps what are some of the immediate needs and of the early enrollees based on spring practices who looks to be able to make an impact early? Also, playing early appears to be a theme; how heavily does this play in a player deciding on WSU?

I thought it was interesting in your BFT interview with Mullins that he said Oregon WBB is not short on resources; that they had all they need. That kind of puts the onus squarely on Graves. As to that, there didn't seem to be a ringing endorsement of the coach. Maybe Mullins is keeping his powder dry?

There's a lot to be said about the dearth of Pacific Timezone options for ESPN, especially if the ACC buckles and they lose Stanford/Cal as options. The Big 12 is already light having only Mountain Timezone schools (Arizona, ASU, BYU, and Utah) and CBS/FOX own the Mountain West.

Whenever the ACC breakup discussion occurs I always think about this. The networks ALL have plenty of schools to fill the early time slots. Their cup runneth over on East Coast schools, but they're pretty light on the late time slot options.

So while Oregon State and Washington State might not be as good as Virginia Tech or NC State on paper, ESPN might value the Pacific Timezone schools more than them purely because Va Tech isn't going to kickoff at 8:00pm.

Eric Dickenson's avatar

He was run off by a President of one school. Mike Leach was revered by fans in Texas and Big 12 country. He was a great quote and brought media interest to where ever he worked. Name 10 college coaches in the last 30 years that were interviewed on 60 minutes. I can think of one...Mike Leach.

WSU the 10th place team in the conference beat CU by 42 points in Pullman. The game was not close, yet CU was the first team the Big 12 hijacked from the Pac 12. Why? The imprint and curiosity of coach Sanders. If Mike McIntire was their coach do you believe the Big 12 is chomping at the bit to bring in CU?

The coach matters.....

EA Flash's avatar

The fact that CU is located in a metropolitan area of 3 million people, and Pullman is in the middle of nowhere, had a lot more to do with it.

Coaches come and go. Nick Saban has been interviewed by 60 Minutes, and also was a lot better football coach.

Well sounds like you did the same deep dive ESPN and Fox did when analyzing WSU. Let's for discussion sake say every TV in eastern Washington has rabbit ears for a receiving TV signals and does not get ESPN or Fox.

However, let's go to Snohomish, King and Pierce County and tell me how many TV sets are in those three counties? WSU has a large and active alumni base there, and even the casual college football fan on a Saturday will watch WSU play as opposed to Indiana vs Penn State.

Not to mention the Husky fans who if they have a 4 PM game and WSU has a 1230 kickoff, as they prep for their game they tend to have the Coug game on.

That may explain why WSU was in the top 6 in terms of TV sets over the course of a ten year period despite using rabbit ears on their TV sets. And BTW kicked the crap out of CU both on the field and in TV market share the last 10 years.

As to the question about Leach, he brought a presence and entertainment, similar to coach Sanders, and despite being fired at Tech he is beloved in the Big 12.

EA Flash's avatar

Your problem is with the Big 12, not me. CU is in a huge TV market; WSU (and OSU) aren't. Right or wrong, that's what they care about, the SIZE of the market, not how many people are watching.

And beloved or not, Leach couldn't have gotten WSU into the Big 12.

John,

Enjoy this format, lots of topics to consider. Portland State’s situation is unenviable. The lack of an actual “home field” is a tremendous hurdle with regard to fan support. I am uninformed as to why the former Civic Stadium is not an option, however, if it has something to do with city government decision making I wouldn’t be surprised. Until Portland cleans up its act any and all hopes for a thriving sports scene will be dashed. I know, I know, soccer draws good crowds, so do cock fights when there are no other options.

John and EA,

Thanks for the low down on Civic Stadium situation. I can’t help but feel the fate of PSU football hinges on securing a down town home field. Any thoughts on the motivation behind the Timbers resistance to accommodating PSU football. This sort of thing only strengthens my suspicion MLS is an organization owned by petty elites, annoyed by their sports status as distant fifth in popularity, afraid to share the field with a lower division college football program, because? Well, because that college team , over time, may well out draw their soccer team.
