Pete Ward was a great guy who also put on a scholarship fundraising dinner every year, for many years, for high school athletes. Always had big sport names in attendance. Rest in Peace Pete.
Best Pac-12 Stadium Press Box View...1. Cal. Looking into Strawberry Canyon or looking west over the San Fran Bay. 2. Fall at Autzen on a clear morning. Looking up the McKenzie River valley and seeing the mountains and fall colors.
Many cool stadiums in PAC12. Difficult to pick the best, but I think John hit on the top 5. We can all agree that any stadium at full capacity is better than half empty ones with better views.
I liked every press box in the Pac-12. In addition to the ones you and Jon Wilner mentioned, I particularly enjoyed the view from Memorial Stadium in Berkeley. ... Thanks for the mention of Pete Ward's passing. He was a local institution.
Hey Ken. You will finally be getting your expanded CFP and I cannot say that I am upset with that at this point. I just hope that they keep it small. 11 conference champions and 5 at large for a 16 team playoff over the mid-December to mid-January month and keep the Bowl games because tradition has to dictate some things, Yes? Also, they give the schools so much financial assistance and make for college football overload during the holidays. Which I love.
I miss your track and field articles. Hope you and yours are doing well.
Hey Hokie: Good to hear from you again. I don't really agree about the bowl games, though. I think most schools lose money on post bowl games. ... I'm expecting to cover more track for The Oregonian this spring and summer.
Yes, there are definitely way too many, but I think that more teams than make the tourney deserve to be feted in other bowls (March Madness/NIT?). Not sure how to determine and schedule them until the Christmas Crazies (🤣) schedule is finalized and that schedule is worked out, but Christmas to NY is a perfect time to watch at least one good game every day/night.
I hope you and yours are doing well and that semi-retirement suits you, Ken.
Where has the press box been at Reser Stadium & where will it be after new side of stadium is completed? Have planners/designers put as much thought into press accommodations as other amenities?
Speaking of Air Raid, I never liked it when stadiums played an air raid siren as part of the game. Indianapolis comes to mind, but after hearing sirens on live cams from Ukraine, I hope all football teams discontinue the use.
This suggestion is compatible with the reason behind the renaming of the UO/OSU Civil War. Also, US municipal governments have in recent years curtailed fireworks displays, in part because they trigger post traumatic stress disorder in veterans and survivors of ever increasing shooting incidents.

Thanks for this.

Thank you for the Pete Ward retrospective, John.

Will UO be enlarging their giant new video board in response?
Oregon’s is 12,276 square feet currently.
That's a quarter-acre. Same as my lot.
So with the Air raid offense coming back can we expect to see 75 passing attempts per game again? /sarc (sort of).
Very thoughtful tribute to Mr Ward. Well said.
Morris says he’ll run more than some of the older versions of Air Raid. He likes his TEs too. But I’d expect to see the ball in the air plenty.

I reckon Pete Ward would have looked fondly on the forest of tents dotting all over Portland (and elsewhere). I'm ready for some football.
