Canzano: Oregon State, Washington State search for footing
What happens if the ACC takes Stanford and Cal?
There are no more friendships. The alliances are gone. All that collegial nonsense died on Friday when a bunch of Pac-12 Conference schools turned and ran for the hills.
Stanford and Cal?
They’ll do the same — what’s best for themselves. The Atlantic Coast Conference is kicking the tires, exploring the addition of a couple of Pacific Time zone schools. There’s a meeting on Tuesday and you can bet if the Bay Area schools are given an ACC invitation, they’ll sprint toward it.
Oregon State and Washington State should be ready to make a move themselves — likely together.
Some things:
• The ACC will either decide to invite both Stanford/Cal or take neither school. After some conversations with involved parties, I think it’s 50/50. Also, university presidents and chancellors are involved, so who knows?
• Oregon State officials spent the last 72 hours wearing out the phones. A source in Corvallis described the scene like this: “We’ve been casting our line in every body of water.”
The Big 12 isn’t an option for OSU, it appears. An ACC source confirmed on Monday that the conference had some initial conversations with Oregon State, but the Beavers aren’t currently considered in play.
Neither is Washington State, I’m told.
