Greed is a manifestation of self-interest that leads to a narrow-minded focus on profit. This kind of behavior typically reaps a benefit at the expense of others.

Oregon has been lifted higher; OSU has been damaged. 100 years of mutually benefiting from their relationship Oregon secretly negotiated with mega media corporation Fox in a deal they knew would blow it all up.

What would the ethics professors at the university of Oregon say about their schools actions?

Expand full comment

Really? What was secret about it. It was obvious since SC/UCLA jumped to the Big 10 that UW & UO wanted to go as well. But they weren't going to get the same deal the Big10/Fox gave the 2 LA schools. So they waited until George K couldn't get a good enough deal to even match the Big12 full share 30M+ promise which Colorado jumped early with an extra $2.5M bonus. Then they negotiated their 50% and increasing deal with the Big10/Fox who got them on the cheap until the next negotiation when they will be full partners. That was still better than the Big12 offer which the other 3 four corner schools then took. Then the PAC12 school with the biggest pockets Stanford negotiated a pennies on the dollar deal to go to the ACC and bring along their sidekick Cal.

I may not be an ethics professor, but I worked for Hewlett Packard for 33 years mostly in upper management positions and I also taught 11 years at the College of Business at Oregon State. I even took ethics and Law School classes at U of O. There was clearly nothing unethical done by UO and UW by making a deal that ended up in a far better place than Stanford. Both Oregon and Washington lawmakers should thank those university leaders for keeping those 2 schools relevant in the future college football world. Now it is up to the Oregon State and WSU leaders to create the best hand for their future. There still is a chance for them also to outclass Stanford with a better solution.. I am rooting for them.

I will just say Edward, that I have never been more proud of being a Beaver believer and I feel sorry, truly for the Oregon duck fans who are now forced to support and make excuses for a dishonorable institution that has a very dirty stain upon it.

Thank you for saying what a whole lot of Duck fans are thinking. I too support OSU, my god daughter graduated from the engineering department. I want OSU to survive this fiasco as do a good amount of other Duck alumni and fans.

Jim, if OSU Alum had bothered to donate to the University and to attend football games, OSU would have been in a much better position than it finds itself in now.

OSU has averaged 11th in attendance and 10th in victories in the Conference for years. Guess who is one step below OSU in those categories (WSU).

When Oregon and Washington left for the Big 10, there were still 8 schools that needed to find homes. Six did, two didn't and the two that didn't stand out like a sore thumb when it comes to alumni support and long term performance.

People can complain all they want about Phil Knight and Oregon, but somehow, magically, multiple other schools in this Conference found a new home.

Had this happened 3 decades ago, Oregon would have been on the outside, looking in, too. UO had some good luck with funding from donors, but OSU also has built beautiful new facilities over the last several years and despite those improvements, fans didn't show up or donate. At some point, that becomes a serious problem.

Also, in addition to Phil Knight, Oregon alumni have donated tens of millions of dollars to UO's athletic department and its football program generated $85 million a year, not including Phil Knights contributions.

Yes, this is about as "ethical" as 20 right wing House Members sending the country into default and the only reason I bring that up is that it is the same thing, doing what is best for yourself or your party or your institution and the rest of us be damned. I suppose the mantra "greed is good" sounds ethical to UO and Phil Knight too?

I don't understand how and why the University of Oregon is resposible for another school's fate. They are not :brothers" or are they "father ans son" one gets an invite another doesn't Other schools in the same conference have invites, to 3 different places ACC/B12/B!G Just because Ore and OSU are in the same state doesn't make either one resonsible for the other

Expand full comment

OSU gets more than double the amount of money from the State than UO gets (210 million vs 75 million inn 2019). That converts into double the funding per student. So, should OSU share that extra more than 100 million dollars with UO? This is all part of a much bigger picture of these two institutions than you see looking at a tv contract for an athletic team, which accounts for about 3 % of the overall budgets. Get a grip.

Expand full comment

School focus has always been on the money, what changed is who it came from. Before it was big donors (alumni) that cared about the school and the student athletes. Now schools chase media dollars, which cares about the casual fan who sees college sports as entertainment. Student athlete and entertainment can't exist together....

Schools have athletic departments, not the other way around

Students are athletes, not the other way around

I just don't see donors being able to compete with media, especially when their money is siphoned off into collectives for NIL... other than some major collapse of media funding...

The professors would say they are happy as money from sports helps pay their salaries. If you think Dan Lanning is not worth $7 million a year , you must be a damn Beaver , a trumpster , or probably both. Baby Beavers are biggest cry babies I have ever seen. They show their ignorance by bashing all the 10 teams that left the titanic. They are taking their train wreck to court. If they had not gotten left out, they would still probably cry. A loser is a loser. Phil Knight saved their good baseball coach , Pat Casey , who won some natties , from going to Notre Dame. Uncle Phil has as done a lot for so many and he has donated to all pac-12 schools. The beavers bash him because they do not have one of best track facilities in the world. Autzen held 40, ooo people before the 2003 season. The new Reser taps out now at 38,000. The big boys back east are mostly not less than 80,000. Michigan is more than 100 k and their athletic department takes in only around 70 mill. per year. The pac two in 2024, might not get much. BOO HOO. A loser who cannot accept defeat is still a cry baby. Chip Hilton you should change your psych meds and get a grief counselor. Tell him you have sudden outbursts of crying and you are miserable. Tell them you are prone to thoughts of stealing another research sheep. This time , do not tell the cops in downtown Corvallis , when they pull you over, that you have no idea of how the baby sheep ended up riding alone in your back seat. Please keep voting for trump.

The new Bidet Bowl in for losers , trumpsters, and is like a beaver, just plain losers. Beavs better concentrate on football. I have them ending 2023 with at least four Pac-12 losses: WSU, Huskies in Reser, UCLA, and mighty Ducks in November in last civil war ever. Beavers cried so much that nobody is afraid of bandits from Benton County anymore. The sobbing and moaning from Reser is louder each day, and can be heard in Portland still. If I have upset you beaver believers, karma is a bitch. Got tired of you trumpsters and rodents clogging up the OSU dam. Is it damn Beavers or Beaver dam? I am a duck for only 62 years, and as a native Oregonian , I used to root for the beavs unless it was the civil war.. You started complaning about what I write two or so years ago. One of you morons accused me of being a dumpstertrumster. Since you and Ted Cruz and house speaker McCarthy are positve the 2020 election was fixed, please find one fact. Most trumpsrers have proof of election fraud. They fronted all the evidnce to Sarah Palin at her new moose burger restaurant in Alaska for safe keeping. She forgot where she hid the evidence, as she was very busy tring to pass her GED for the 9th time. Desantis is still trying to ruin Florida, and is not safe to go there. They all deny global warming is real. If a PHD guy , from Stanford, has proof and records , that is good enough for all of we college people. Facts are facts and please either do not vote, and do not get new covid shots. I have only had seven covids shots, flu shot, and Shingles shots too. I did it because this old friend who converted to repuplican, told me the only people that have died from covid (1 or so million in USA.) are the smart ones who did NOT GET A SHOT . REALLY AND SO i WANTED TO SEE IF HE WAS STUPID or just a genius. He said Dr. Fowchie (sp) was a quack and Dr. Oz never told a lie and got robbed in last election. All you election 2020 deniers, better find sarah palin and all her data fast.

Blame the white sister who barely lost in Arizona in 2022 and is still going to court to prove she was victim of voter fraiud . She is a huge trumpster and dumber than a sack of wet rocks. Her last name is Lake, and she says if she loses in 2024, the election was fixed. Another Snidley whiplatch move like trump. He said if he ever lost in a presidential electon, he could prove he got cheated. If it was not Snidley, I am sure it was one of his cousins, Worbell Doobits, or Mortimer Schnere. Eat ----with a rusty spoon to all you Beavers and trumpsters. Sure glad I chose Ducks in 1963 over the Beavers, and never have voted for any circus GOP clown for President and never will! Ridin with Biden 2024 and my Ducks for as long as the good Lord allows me to wake up each new day. Maybe you Beavs better just beg the Big Sky to let you in. Losers pick losers and OSU does not deserve to be in Pac two in 2024. Football is not for sissies who cry all the time. go ducks and dump trump 2024.

This is all about eliminating opposing market share. There's no doubt both UW and Oregon would love to sink the OSU and WSU football programs permanently, making them as close to irrelevant as possible. These programs are not only pesky competition, but they split the state in half with fandom. With his money, Phil Knight already tried buying recruits, using Nike advantage and paying for headlines to put the ducks out of reach for OSU football and basketball, but as we've seen, the Beavs continue to beat the ducks in football and MBB. It was all too convenient when FOX and the Big10 used UW/UO as pawns to prevent AppleTV from getting involved in CFB broadcasting by throwing them a lifeline to the Big10. UW and UO sailed away assuming the Beavs and Cougs would be forced into the MWC, but guess what? The 2 schools left for dead have 6 ways to Saturday to not only survive, but prosper.

Expand full comment

Honestly I'm confused. There is no way that Oregon and Washington wants to sink those 2 schools. in sports That's like saying Alabama wants to sink Auburn or Clemson doesn't wants South Carolina. Those games are big every year in all sports and help both schools relevancy. The better one gets, the better the other gets whether they are in the same conference or not.

Living here in Corvallis I always said the best things for both schools has been their games, especially when they both can compete. In every sport those stupidly named rivalry series games are their biggest attended matches and events. The home team often wins. I am fairly confident both UO/UW will support continuing to play the Apple Cup/Civil War games as much as possible. For OSU/WSU they need that as that will be their biggest football payday every other year. I am all for WSU and OSU to prosper. Go Beavs!

well if you consider "continue to beat your opponent" in football only 12 out of the last 40 games, being competitive, bless your heart. I'd like to see your comments after the state legislature says NO to more taxpayer dollars to OSU. They get plenty already and where is the return. Last I checked, the Schools have athletic Departments, NOT the athletic departments have schools. The Oregon legislature and Taxpayer dollars are "SUPPOSED" to support the schools & education.

Phil Knight should be the only person to testify for Oregon!

When the legislature began in February and after the UCLA/USC departure from the PAC-12 I asked my Representative Paul Evans D Monmouth to introduce a Bill that would cause OSU and UO to seek legislative approval if they decide to leave the PAC 12. He did it and it received a Hearing. It died from lack of interest. Once U of O bolted that little Bill received attention in the media where my Representative was quoted. The next day my Representative and friend was informed by the political establishment that Knight committed to supporting and spending his money to defeat my Representative in the next election.

So it’s seems clear that if you offend the King he’ll come after you! Since it appears that Knight is running the college sports in Oregon then why go through the Theater of this Hearing? Just ask the King what he wants then Bow and do as he says.
