EUGENE — Fans looked delighted. Coaches sounded happy. Dante Moore threw three touchdown passes, and the Oregon Ducks throttled Montana State 59-13 on Saturday in the season opener at Autzen Stadium.

Got time for a quick story?

I’ll get to the UO offense, defense, and special teams. We’ll discuss the Duck mascot losing its head during the team run-out and dashing back into the tunnel (did that really happen??!?!), and what Dan Lanning should be concerned about, but first… storytime.

I was in Maui years ago on a trip that was paid for by a radio sponsor. A travel agency that specialized in Hawaiian trips sent me to the islands for five days. I went on a zip line, hiked to a waterfall, and snorkeled with manta rays. My job was to tell people how great the trip was — and it definitely was.

At the end of one day, I slipped into the hot tub near the pool of the resort. An older gentleman was in the jacuzzi, and we struck up a conversation. Turns out, it was Wayne Dyer, a well-known self-help author and motivational speaker.

“I have leukemia,” he told me. “I’m dying.”
