I love a good escape act. Oregon pulled one off, for sure. But Saturday brought another head-scratching mystery to the theater called Autzen Stadium.

The Ducks beat Boise State 37-34 on a game-winning field goal.

For the second time in two weeks, Oregon looked disjointed, out of rhythm, mistake-prone, and then suddenly, just good enough to win.

Underwhelmed? Of course. Relieved? Sure. A win is a win, we all say. But if it weren’t for two special-teams scores — a punt and kickoff return — Saturday night might have gone down as a disaster in Eugene.

Do you know how professors sometimes ask the class if there are questions at the end of a lecture? If professor Dan Lanning had grabbed the public-address microphone after the game-winning field goal and asked “Any questions?” 54,000 hands would have shot up. Saturday’s victory brought some new ones.
