LUBBOCK, Tex. — The man called “Shoe Dog” hustled out of the visiting athletic director’s suite late in the fourth quarter on Saturday night.

Phil Knight, dressed in a black sport coat and black jeans, drifted past me in the press box at Jones AT&T Stadium with his Oregon Ducks clinging to a one-point lead.

“Got ‘em right where you want ‘em,” I told him.

“Not pretty,” Knight shot back.
