Canzano: Nothing to see at Colorado practice
When an "open" practice isn't really open.
Years ago, Chip Kelly let Kirk Herbstreit and his kids into a Rose Bowl practice.
I should rephrase that.
Kelly allowed Herbstreit and the kids to stay for the full practice. This was a Friday in late December 2011. The Ducks were playing Wisconsin in Pasadena a few days later, on Jan. 2. The first 15 minutes of the practice for both teams were open to all media.
Kelly didn’t practice in that little period. No formations. No plays. No clues provided. Everyone understood this was a glorified photo op. TV cameras ate it up. Print reporters got almost nothing from it.
Oregon’s players were jogging around, mostly goofing off. At one point, Herbstreit’s kids played a game of “keepaway” with some Ducks players, including LaMichael James. Then, when the 15 minute-period expired, a horn sounded, and the journalists covering the team were shooed off the field.
