Canzano: Monday Mailbag includes airport sprint, Oregon's CFP loss, WSU's smile, OSU portal, Demond Williams Jr. forgiveness tour
Hugs? Glassy eyes? In a mailbag?
My oldest daughter left for graduate school on Saturday. Her outbound flight at Portland International Airport was scheduled for 30 minutes before I was set to land on my return from the Oregon-Indiana game in Atlanta.
I was bummed I wouldn’t see her off.
During my flight’s approach, I casually checked her flight status. Her plane was delayed slightly. I was delighted. If I deplaned quickly and hustled across the airport, I might be able to catch her before she boarded and give her one last hug.
Do you remember dropping your kid off at kindergarten? The first day of undergraduate college at a dorm drop off? I was there for both. I can tell you that her departure for out-of-state graduate school also came with that familiar blend of hope and a heavy heart.
My plane landed at Gate E10. Her departure flight was out of Gate C23. I’m told that the distance across the airport, past the TSA security station, is about one mile. I ran it with a backpack on, towing my suitcase behind me on Saturday. I must have looked like a guy who was late for a flight.
I was just trying to get to my kid.
“Dad?!” she said as I came hustling up to her gate, out of breath. “I’ve never seen you run like that. You’re sweating.”
I hugged the kid. I didn’t want her to see how wet my eyes were.
The Monday Mailbag is here. I received amazing questions this week. They include questions about Oregon’s playoff loss to Indiana, Washington State’s president, Oregon State’s portal mission, Demond Williams Jr.’s forgiveness tour, and much more.
Thanks to all who asked questions.
