Canzano: Monday Mailbag dives into CFP mess, Pac-12, Pac-2, Oregon's loss... and Liberty?!?
Your questions, my answers.
It is not a playoff.
It never was.
The College Football Playoff is a four-team invitational tournament. The participants are picked by a selection committee. An actual playoff would include automatic qualifiers. It would be clear, sensible and leave no doubt. The focus would be on the matchups, not the process.
Mike Leach tried to tell the world the four-team “playoff” was a joke. The guy was a prophet. The late football coach called out the absurdity in a post-game news conference years ago while still at Washington State.
“It’s not a playoff,” Leach said, “there’s nothing ‘playoff’ about it.”
Florida State went 13-0.
Not good enough… as it turns out.
