ATLANTA — It’s cold here.
Today’s low: 17 degrees.
The College Football Playoff national championship game will kick off at Mercedes-Benz Stadium later today. The weather service has issued an “Extreme Cold Watch” for the metropolitan area. The wind chill will be in the single digits.
Ohio State vs. Notre Dame.
Atlanta vs. Mother Nature.
The game is being played indoors. The stadium is essentially the CFP igloo, which is great because it’s difficult to file a column when your laptop turns into an ice sculpture. But the infrastructure around the championship event is bracing for cold weather, icicles, and a potential dusting of snow in the next 24 hours.
The national title game should be held at the Rose Bowl, shouldn’t it?
Forecast today in Pasadena: Sunny and 67.
Every year, college football’s biggest game should be played in Southern California. I’m not the only one suggesting this, but given that the season is now longer than ever, it makes sense that the final event should feature a venue that has palm trees out front. In Atlanta today, I will not be surprised if the media shuttle to the game is pulled by a team of sled dogs.
I received great questions this week for the Monday Mailbag. Readers wanted to know about the Pac-12, the NCAA, Bill Belichick, college football “General Managers,” and the road woes of Oregon State men’s basketball.
I was asked about wildfire fighting, the length of the college football season, Lincoln Riley’s job security at USC, Jody Allen’s hold-out position, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame, among other topics.
Thanks to all who submitted questions.
